And so consumes l ife In thee I Dear flower, I bathe thee in my tears t each true and perfect type thou art Of life that grew beneath my heart. And into sudden bloom did start, My little Human Bleeding Heart. A fair, frail life, that drooped with grief. Whose slight snd slender form did bow. And in sweet, silent patience bear A mother’s cross, and smiling wear The thorn-crown on his baby brow. Go. lovely flower, snd bloom above The weary child who sleeps below! Go ask those wistful, longing eyes If now they smile In Paradise? A lonely mother longs to know. And whisper in a mother’s ear The secret of thy faith, that I Hay smile and bleed, may bleed and bloom, While patience, like thy sweet perfume, in incense to the sky. O, Christ, the Heavens above me shin9, And Joy to wear Thy cross and crown! I read in many a starry line That “pain and anguish are divine.’’ This healing truth steals softly down. And sinks into my soul. The earth, Broken and bruised, doth smile and sing, Doth speak in Thine own PasBion Flowers, And whisper through the summer hours, That “suffering is a holy thing.” O, Christ, O holy Bleeding Heart, I live, and love, and bleed with Thee! And so, my suffering Lord, would I Rejoice to bleed, rejoice to die, Since Thou hast bled and died for me. IN GENERAL. — The King of Prussia has decreed that in the event of war merchant vessels belonging to subjects of hos- tile States shill not be subject to capture and confisca tion by his ships of war. . — Novel proceedings recently took place at the Ohio Female College near Cincinnati. Mr. Brown, Presi dent of the Atlantic Steamship Company, owns an in terest of $50,000, and has a mortgage on the other if.tf Having failed to get possession of the property by suits in Court, he, with counsel,_ took forcible pos session. The citizens, feeling outraged, assembled in great numbers, and would have ousted the invaders had not calmer heads restrained them. .Tho sheriff, by an order of the Court, ejected them. The Persian conqueror, Nadir Shah, saw the cele brated Koh-i-noor, glittering in the turban of the van quished Mohammed Shah, and proposed in the most friendly sort of a way imaginable that they should ex change head-dresses; and as the conquered man pre ferred that to parting with his head, the exchange was made. Finally, after undergoing similar exchanges for centuries, it has now become one of the crown jewels of England. May live to fight another day.” These lines, generally attributed to Hudibras, are really much older. They are to be found iu a book published in 1656. The same idea is, however, cx- preesed in a couplet published in 1542, while oue of the fragments in Menander, the Greek writer, that have been preserved, embodies the same idea in a sin gle line Tbs couplet in Hudibras is: •• For those that fly might fight again. Which he can never do that’s slain.” “Hell ia paved with good intentions,” though found in Johnson and Herbert, was obviously in that day of proverbial expression. The origin of this familiar phrase is not known, but it is quoted as a proverb by Wiliam, of Malmesbury, who lived in the early part, of the twelith century. •• Ultima ratio ngum." This motto was engraved on the French cannon by order of Louis XII. “Whistling girls snd growing beua Always come to tome bad end.” In one of the curious Chinese books recently trans lated and published in Paris, the proverb occurs in substantially the same words.
