Mayor's Court.—Ir the absence of His Honor the
Mayor, the Ordinance provide* that his place shall be
filled by the Chairman of Council, and in case of his
absence the Court to be presided over by three Aider-
men. Both the Mayor and Chairman being ahsen
yesterday, the Court was presided over by Aldermen
ullard, Johnson and Ferrill.
The first case tried yesterday morning was that of
tieo. Gram, colored, charged with improper conduct
in the market, drawing a knife, and threatening to cut
witness, A. A. Davis. From the evidence elicited, it
appears that a lady went to the meat stall of Grant, for
the purpose of purchasing some meat. Thinking that
the price asked was too high, she was speaking to the
butcher. Grant, about it, when Davis, who is also a
butcher, said something to the lady, and Bhe went to
his stall. After the lady had gone off. Grant, with his
butcher knife in his hand, stepped up to the stall of
Davis in a threatening manner, cursing him about in
terfering with his customers. Some few words passed
betw een them, when Davis attempted to get a pistol,
but was prevented from doiug so. Davis then pro-
. ured the services of a policeman and had Grant ar
rested. The case was called for Wednesday, but owing
to the absence of witnesses it was continued over un
til yesterday. On Wednesday, Grant went to Davis
ind made an apology, and acknowledged that he had
■line wrong, and asked that the case might be dropped*
The apology was accepted, with tlie proviso that the

Examinations.—^The case of Jacob Rosenbaum and
Harr Goldman, charged with stealing nineteen dollars
from the pocket of Mrs. Witty at an auction, was ax.
•mined before Justice Staley yesterday afternoon.
After examining the evidence in the case, there not
being sufficient proof to convict Goldman, he was dis
charged. Rosenbaum being found guilty, was com
mitted to jail to await his trial for the offence of rob
bery before the next January term of the Superior
Court.
The case of Thomas Howard, charged with commit
ting an assault upon Jacof/Loveit, with intent to kill,
was committed to jail to await his trial before the next
term of fhe Superior Court, to answer to the above
charge.
Sxbamkr Taminknd.—This steamer which haa been
undergoing repairs, on the opposite side of the river
for some time past, having completed the same, is
now ready for launohing. The Taminend it will be
remembered, struck on a sand bar near Yellow Bluff
a short time since, and had to be beached to prevent
her from sinking. She was subsequently raised and
brought to this city where she has been thoroughly
repaired.
Msasns Bell, Wtlly A Christian would most re-
pectfully call the attention of the publio to the sale
of a large, choice and complete assortment of family
groceries, to take place at 10 o'clock, at F. P. Halsey A
Co.’s store, under the Maaonic Hall.
Honbsty is the best poli cy in medicine as well a
in other things. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla is a genuine
preparation of that unequalled Spring medicine and
blood purifler, decidedly superior to the poor Imita

FOR, CHARLESTON,
Henry Bell (colored), charged
Jnct in the house of witness, a
i'.obertsville; also charged with
ing to disarm the arresting officer. The
stated that he was called upon by the colored
11 arrest Beil, who refused to be arrested,
tbat he would go to the Court House to the Bureau,
but they would have to kill him before be would go to
the barracks. He then attempted to disarm tbe ar
resting officer. Another policeman came to his as-
trstance. and after a hard struggle they succeeded in
placing Bell in a wagon, and conveyed him to the bar
sacks. On arriving at tbe barracks, a revolver was
found concealed on hit person, of which he was dis
armed. On beiDg brought before their presiding
Honors, the prisoner stated that he had been living
wrth the woman who was witness against him sa his
wife, and after spending all his money on her sha
wanted to leave him, to which ho could not agree, and
therefore had given her three or four cuts to makt her
range her determination. Tbe woman, on the con
trary, said tbat she had only engaged to cook for th*
pr.soner, and tbat in the meantime he had ill-treated
iter cn several occasions, even going so far aa to tie
n.r hands and whip her, and that he had just got
through tying and whipping her when she had him
arrested. Bell’s evidence not hsving any tendency to
rxpuipate him from the charges brought against him,
and being ratber a hard-looking character, he was sen
tenced to the chain-gang for thirty days, and to forfeit
fi.s pistol.
Joe Mitchell and Samuel Gourdin, two colored boys,
charged with striking Mr.'Westcott's son with a rock,
were brought up. After hearing the testimony of the
wtnessee, their. Honors inquired of the'Chief of Police
tf he could employ them st the barracks. The Chief
c: Police replied in tbe affirmative, and stated that
they belonged there, as they had just been let out
few days since, and have been constant prisoners for
a 'Bis time. As it is evident that these negro boys
’-“old not fare as well in the streets as in tbe barracks
‘‘“he eating line, it is not improbable tbat they com-
the oflencp above mentioned for the purpose
: vetting l^k. They were given the benefit of con-
-.liUing the aa of gardening at the barracks for the
