ESTILL <4 BROTHER, Newsdealers, Sta tioners and Booksellers, Bnll street (down stairs) corner of Bay lane, next to the Post Office, are au thorized agents for 1 he Daily News k Herald. All orders ieft with them will be promptly attended UatOR'S COL'KT—ALDKRMAN WYLLY PRSSIDING.— The first case tried on Saturday, of which there were but few, was that of John McCarthy, charged with being drunk in tho streets. Hia Honor stated that there had been no violation of the law in the case of McCarthy, as the ordinance stated that a man must be drunk and lying In the streets to make it an ot- rence, and in tills case the prisoner was merely drunk anil standing np, without creating any disturbance. He, however, stated that the policeman was right in arresting him and taking him to the barracks foi; protection. James Wilson (colored), violating city ordinance in peddling without a license. As the negro seemed to be ignorant of the law, he was reprimanded and let off wiih a flue of $1. Perry Howard (colored), charged with stealing _ basket of eggs nnd some provisions from a. country cart at tlie market, was turned over to a magistrate lor prosecution. The negro Howard, when arrested, was sitting down, quietly helping himself to the cooked provisions that were in the basket; while an other negro, no doubt his accomplice, had gone on with the eggs, probably to dispose of them. Personal.—On Saturday afternoon we strolled into the store of Mr. S. M. folding, on Congress street, and while that geutlemaujwas waiti ng upon some cus tomers. occupied ourself for a few minutes in exami ning his fine stock of hats, caps, bonnets, Ac., and in admiring the general neat and tasteful arrangement of the establishment. Whilo thus employed, we ob served Mr. folding approaching us, butnot suspecting his intentions, we quietly continued our observations. Hu advanced to within a few feet of us, when sudden ly seizing a good sized black hickory cane from the le, without a word of warning, deliberately struck us with surprise, by presenting it to us •n a very complimentary manner. Not being in a resentful mood, and averse as wo were to a saene in so public a place, we took the affront with as good grace as possible, and after a few dispassionate words retired from the store. We have always regaraed the Captain as a civil amiable gentleman. Our readers may therefore judge our surprise at the occurrence just related. We do not believe that he is in the habit of treating his customers otherwise than courteously, and notwith standing his conduct towards us on Saturday, we think we can assure those in need of articles in his line that they need feel under no apprehension of being served in like manner. *■4 iHthin §4$mu •Hip Uhl. We Ire *ratifled to lean that ths effort of thU Company to eatsbllih steam communication between Philadelphia and the principal Southern cities is being rewarded with success. They already have two steamahipe on the Itne to tide city—the Pioneer and Tonawanda ; and have one on the route to New Orleans—the Star of the Union. The Company has beat peculiarly fortunate In the selection of Mr. Ste phen Yiannican as President, a gentleman who has long been connected with the mercantile interests of Philadelphia, and who ta widely known in this re gion. Without remuneration, he ia devoting hia time to the advancement of the interact* not only of the Company, bat of the merchants and business men of both sections. We nnderstand that it is the wish of a number of onr merchants to take a part of the stock, and as it la not quite all taken, Capt Hoxie, of the Pioneer, will bring the hooks to Savannah to afford them the opportunity of subscribing. The agents of the line in this city, Messrs. Hunter k Oammell, are doing all their power to establish it on a firm basis, and the full freight carried by the Pioneer on Saturday, mnst be regarded as a most gratifying evidence of success. The company have also been fortunate in the selection of officers for their vessels. Capt. Hoxie, of the Pioneer is a thorough seaman and s worthy gen tleman, who loses no opportunity to make his pas asngera feel at home on hia vesseL Captain Teal, of the Tonawanda, is a careful and reliable gentlemen in whom hia passengers can place the utmost confl deuce. Assault with Intent to Murder. — Richard Holmea, a colored mau, was arrested on Saturday last charged with an assault upon the person of a man named Simmons, with intent to murder. It ap pears that Simmons was at work in the tailor shop in which he is employed, when Holmes walked in, drew a pistol and presened it at the breast of Simmons, stating that he intended to kill him for insulting his wife. Had it not been for the prompt interference of the proprietor of the establishment, there is no doubt that Holmes would have executed his threats. Holmes was arrested and taken before Justice P. M. Russel who committed him to jail to await an examination The lassitude of our climate and the tendency to fevers, through prostration, render a general tonic of indispensable Importance. We know of nothing answering this purpose like the admirable Ferro- Phosphorated Elixir of Caswell, Mack A Co. It is a triple tonic, being a combination of three of the best tonics of the Pharmacopeia: Iron, which enriches the blood; phosphorus, which renews waste of nerve tlssne; and Calisaya, which affords vigor to thedi gestive organs. The Elixir is palatable to the taste. Altogether, we know of no remedy that can compare with it. Sold by Lippman, Savannah. Fourth of July.—Messrs. Stuart A Co., corner of Bull and Broughton streets, have just receivsd a large supply of Are works, embracing every variety of pyrotechnics of modern invention. Those who desire to set the Fourth of July in a_blaze—to illuminate the heavens and wake the echoes on that oceasion will find ample material for that purpose at Stuart k Co’s, with every variety of good things, spiritual and sub- stantial. wherewith to be Jolly on the .National Anni versary. Fboh New York.—The steamship Herman Living' ston, Capt. Baker, from New York, arrived at her wharf about 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon. For fail hies of late New York papers, we are indebted to Pur ser Robert Saussy. From Charleston.—The steamer Kate, Capt. Lock wood, from Charleston, arrived about half-past eight o'clock last eveuiDg. Purser Mahoney" wili please ac cept our thanks for flavors. Steamer Darlisotos.—The steamer Darlington, Captain lirock, from Charleston, arrived here on Sat urday morning lam. The Darlington, it will he re membered, struck un the obstroctions a short time since, while on her way from Hawkinsville to this Uty, aud was so badly damaged as to cause her to spring aleak and sink. She was subsequently raised by the Washington and Metropolitan engines and brought to tiiis city, and from here she was taken to '’harieston, where she went into the dry dock and ™ vtfSftmgMy overhauled and reoalred. »>—la- tsvi g a new coat of paint applied to her. The Dar Jingtoa is now, in every respect, one of the staunch est and finest steamers on our river. Her late peri- .ons condition ou the obstructions proved that there was good material in her bottom, as she lay for sev- eial days with between two and three hundred bales of cotton on board, without being the least strained. From thb Stkambr Oak.—The boiler, machinery, kc., of the steamer Oak were brought to the city on a lighter, on Saturday afternoon last, and landed on the wharf near Miller’s foundry. B. LUCE. Shipping.—Our wharves presented quite a dull ap i-earance yesterday. There were only 1 ship, 1 bark," J brigs and 4 schooners lying at the wharves on both t.des of the river, from the Ogeechee Canal lock to the extreme end of the Eastern Wharf. This, of coarse, does not include tho few small coasting ves sels lying at the different wharves. There is alwaya a scarcity of vessels in port at this season of the year, batj we have never, except during the war, seen so tew as there ere at present. The absence of shipping may oe attributed to the small amount of cotton heights offering sail vessels, their cargoes being con- ane-i principally to timber and lumber, the large nuxn her of steamers plying between this city and New >ork. Philadelphia, Baltimore and Boston, being ca pable ol transporting all the cotton offered for North ern ports at present. Accident on the Gulf Road.—The passenger train a the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, failed to connect v.th the up train on the Central Railroad, Saturday •renjig, inconsequence of the track on the former h.id having been torn up for about thirty yards. The accident was occasioned by the breaking of one of the iy..ngs of the down freight train in the morning, from •riuen cause four freight trains were thrown off the '•■act, and precipitated down a hill a distance of about ■tuny feet, and completely, smashed up. There were nu hvis iost by the accident, and the damage to the ‘-rack was soon repaired. 8 F Smith, Tatnall co R F W Muller, Oldenburg E E Balisarlo, City R G Holmes, Beaufort R Marsh, N Y R V Lynch, N Y J P Burroughs, Fla W H Livingston.
