The planters all concur in opinion that it is a new importation, unlike the species usually seen there aud much more destructive. It resembles very closely the caterpillar of Texas, whose ravages have been so terrible upon corn and coiton, and not uofrequently preying upon fruit trees and the gras* on the praries. Generally ^hese insects eat the leaves, leaving nothing but the'stems, and then the stocks die oul. They had not gone beyond a certain district, but there was int’ r ’ ...ehenstoa that they will gradual!• .-ad over the country, and thus jgin-further reduce the growing crop. SOF6XORUU t of the -iiiea, in one of 4dp recent lettei .* paper, gives the fonow^ag interest feklieh of the splendid railroad system Florida. We desireto call attention particular^ to the second paragraph, in which he demon strates statistically the imports^ of the Georgia connection, an enterprise of such paramount value as to have attracted not only the earnest attention of the communi ties immediately int^fested, but the notice of manne intelligent travellers also, who are aje-Smi- □ently qualified by observation and experi ence to judge critically of such matters. Writing from Femandinfa be says: For the especial benefitof ^* 8 make up their minds to seefcf^ de8Cr j ption lovely State, I will give which I of the railroad system ff ... . , , tIle rnfh der The X Flo^»- fJnTsutiu South. Our informant states that the seeqe was witnessed by a large number of persons; a majority of whom were negroes, and all concurred in the opinion that O’Bannon deserved the terrible punishment to which he was subjected. He stated that his associate, William, had in duced him to do what he did, by informing him that he (William) had been engaged in robbing and murdering for the last six 90,000 bbls- Southern Company now wish to connect with Savan- years without being detected. The deceased nah by building a branch road from Lawton (umv in running order from Savannah to Thomasville), to a place called Live Oak, about forty miles due south. This requires about a quarter of a million ot dollars, or credit to that amount. Twenty miles of iron is down, and the road is graded and cross ties are on the balance. All that is wauted is cash to purchase twenty miles of iron, or credit to that amount. It will be seen that the passenger and freight business would lie immense. If the Company can get this, they will as soon as possible connect Quincy with the Apalachicola river. The finishing ot this link, conn< cr in-r the roads of this State with those of other South ern States, would afford great facilit: s to the whole section of country from the A.- ’ acId- cola river to the St. Johns, and "i < -m>'rv penetrated by the Florida II ‘i "ad Tie distance from Quincy, the preseui Wester.; terminus of the Georgia and Pensacola -K e'- road, within tweoty miles of the Apalachico la river, to Live Oak Station, where, the Georgia connection diverges, is 10ti miles; from Live Oztk Station to 8fiVRDnab, 183 miles: entire distance from Quincy to Sa vannah, 389 miles: distance from Gainsville, on the Florida Railroad, to Baldwin,_ 51 miles; from Baldwin to Live Oak Station, 6t> miles; and from thence to Savannah, 183 miles—in all, 300 miles from Gainsville to Savannah. It is seen that the writer affirms, as far as he goes, fhe masterly exposition of the im portance of this connection, as presented in the address of Major Scriven, published a few days since. The fact that th« planters of Florida, the business men of this city, and Northern travellers, the latter speaking dis interestedly, are alike impressed upon this topic of public interest, is a coincidence as remarkable as it is auspicious. And the ex planation is to be found in the fact that their attention has been aroused to the great com mercial truth, among others, that the short est route from the Northern Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf, the route of easiest grade and least liable to interruption by snows and ice is along the Atlantic slope by rail or water to Savannah, and hence to the Gulf; and the Florida connection is but. a link in the magnificent line which is soon to stretch from New York to New Or leans. In the activities and competition of trade, which demand the contraction of dis tances and the economizing of time, advan- stated also, that when he and William left Macon, it was with the determination to rob and plunder and minder if necessary to ac complish their designs, whatever they were. When the train left Macon yesterday, Wil liam, the accomplice, was being closely pur sued, and it was supposed he was uot more than six miles beyond the city. During the pursuit of both the negroes, just before the capture of O’Bannon, William wa3 shot in the face, but succeeded in making his escape and on reaching Macon had his wound dress ed. A reward of five hundred dollars was offered for his capture. It says that the present high rates are disastrous to all the interests that affect the company’s welfare, and ope rate so as to engender a general disinclina tion on the part of the people to' travel or ship, except in cases of unavoidable neces sity. The writer remarks, also, that “it is his honest conviction that a reduction of the fare t/ould increase the travel immediately at ’east four hundred per cent,,” and that th< —*s. planters and mechanics on the , UUU ur with him in this opinion. ■ It is seated, also, that “the reduction of present rutos would induce hundreds of people to go to Savannah who are now deterred from it, and remain at home and lose money for the want of essential articles, and send down or ders and pav to commission merchants a per centage which would otherwise go into luges such as are presented by a comprehen- the treasury' of the company.” j *ive view ol the scheme4mder consideration These important statements are entitled to, j must be controlling, and the enterprising and and we feel assured will receive the con- intelligent business men of Southern Geor- sideration of the Board of Directors, the only gia and of Florida will perceivo that to sc an than-w competent to make any necessary cure Ufese- advantages for themsel ves^ will .a, wbirdi m»v be I n!«f ' the tsd sections above the T '' with Washington, June confirmed the follt Marti® F. THE COMMENCEMENT OP THE EURO PEAN WAR. The latest news from Europe is of the highest interest. Prussia, defeated by Aus tria in the Federal Diet, has seceded irora the German Confederation and invaded Sax ony and Hanover. Austria, it was supposed, would scud troops to dislodge them from these countries. A rumor, not generally credited, however, was in circulation at Paris on the 16th ult., that a battle had al ready occurred near Leiptic. The Italians, it is said, had moved forward towards the Mir.cio. The military forces and prospects are dis cussed with lively interest by the press of Eugiand and France, which, seem to agree in the opinion that they are in each case such us to prevent anything like assurance in esti mating the chances and results- Whilst it is admitted that Prussia has the advantage in equipment, Austria is sup--' itJ r in numbers and in cavalry arms The Aus trian population is divert ln rac# an <j char ' acteristics which may impair the efficiency of the army, bat on the other hand, that ot Prussia is greatly wanting in unanimity of sentiment to supporting the war. The ar ot both nations have able and expe tenced commanders. Prussia has a power ful ally in Italy. Austria is to have the aid of the more important minor German States, besides the moral support of the con federation. The interest of Italy in the strug gle is paiufully intense, as it is conceded by her rulers that failure with her in this great Central Rail Road Company, SAVANNAH, GA. .tithing and oTiTmuiks, win b.- ^ur7 u urnTcii^, instead Of ttf.nl class as fl - present.
