advised to seek a change of climate,
WM thought that it might be beneficial toms
declining health. He left for the North, but
as soon as he reached there he was advised
to return home, his disbase having progress
ed so far that there was very little prospect
of his recovery.
Captain Davis joined the Republican Blues
in 1828, and filled all the various grades of
office in the company with credit to himself
and honor to the corps, of which he was
an active member up to the breaking out of
the war, when he was elected Captain of
Company B, which was formed by the divis
ion of the Blues. Shortly after the com
mencement of the war, the commanding of
ficer seeing that his services could be more
beneficial to the Government in a different
capacity, he was detached from the Blues
and placed in charge as superintendent and
general director of all the cattle slaughtered
lor the use of the army of this military dis
trict. In this position he fully maintained
his former reputation as an honest and up
right business man, discharging honestly and
fearlessly, all his duties, both with the Gov
ernment and individuals. As a compliment
to liia excellent character, his friends elected
him an Aldennan of the city on several oc
casions, and solicited him to run for the
Legislature and the Mayoralty, which he de
clined.
Captain Davis has been a constant attend
ant at the market for the last thirty years,
where his unbounded charity was displayed
to its fullest extent, being always ready and
willing to supply the ne ;dy without compen
sation. It would be idle for us to speak of
the charities of such a mau when they are so
well known to the entire people of the city,
and especially to the poor, who feel his death
so keenly.
When this city fell under the dominion of
General Sherman’s army, the lamented de
ceased had but one hundred dollars, which
he nobly divided among several distressed
families, retaining but a small share for him
self.
Mr. Davis was a native of Savannah, aged
sixty years and ten months, and has left a
wife and three children, with numerous rela
tives and a large circle of devoted friends to
mourn his loss.
The funeral took .place shortly after five
o'clock yesterday afternoon, from his late
residence, and was attended by the members
of the Republican Blues and a large number
of citi7ens.

The LASsmms of onr climate and tlte tendency to
fevers, through prostration, render a general tonic
of indispensable importance. We know of nothing
answering this purpose like the admirable Ferro-
Phosphorated Blixlr of Caswell, Hack A Co. k is a
triple tonic, being a combination of three of the best
tonics of the Pharmacopeia: Iron, which enriches
the blood; phosphorus, which renews waste of nerve
tissue; and Calisaya, which affords vigor to the di-
geitlve organs. The Elixir is palatable to the taste.
Altogether, we know of no remedy that ran compare
with it. Sold by Lippman, Savannah.

County of Glynn in the Georgia Legislature
in 1835, and was a warm advocate of the bill
