The ninetieth anniversary of Independence Day was celebrated in this city in a quiet and orderly manner- At sunrise a salute of thirteen guns were fired from the r. s. revenue cutter Nanaemoud, and at twelve o'clock a National salute of twenty-one guns was fired by the Nanaemoud, mid also from Fort Pqjaski, and by tke troops garrisoning this post, at tho U. 8. Bar racks. in the morning a large party ot young men, who had chartered the .steamer Express, proceeded on her to a private pic-nio given by them at Coleraine, the residence of the late James Potter, on the Savannah river. The steamer O. Ai. Petit also left for Thunderbolt in the morning, on an excursion. In the afternoon the steamer Lizzie Baker, with quite a number of persons on board, went on a plea sure excursion to Tybee. The afternoon was also pleasantly spent by quite a J*rge number of our citizens, principally Germans, who repaired to the farm of Mr. Broadbacker, and en gaged in target shooting for three prizes—two silver • ups and a goblet. The party fired with a rifle—dis tance, one hundred yards. The prizes were won re spectively by Messrs. F. Brown, John Quint, and J. J Massart, their shots striking the bull's-eye. The target firing being over, the party repaired to the farm ot Mr. Brickmau, adjoining Broadbacker*s, where they spent the afteruoou in dancing, Ac., the merri ment bein^iept up until about 12 o’clock. In the evening there was a display of pyrotechnics in various parts of the city, though not on a very ex tensive scale There was no formal observance of the day by our citizens, though business was pretty generally sus pended, and u large portion of our imputation availed themselves of ilie opportunity for & day's recreation. It is worthy of remark that our black and colored population indulged in no excesses, and as a class conducted themselves with perfect propriety. \\ e take pleasure, also, in recording the tact that the day passed without the occurrence of any accident, disorder or disturbance of an\ kind, so far us we have been able to learn. Disturbanc e In Atlanta. We learn from a passenger who arrived by the train from Atlantic, iast evening, that a disturbance took place near the depot in that city on Wednesday even ing, between some negroes and several soldiers be longing to the 16th regulars. The difficulty, our In formant states, was supposed to have been brought on by two soldiers who were standing on the side-walk, amusing themselves in shoving all the colored wo men that passed from the side-walk. Several negro men. who bad been observing them for some time, interfered with the two soldiers, when brickbats were immediately brought into requisition, aud shortly after pistols were drawn. During the melee one of the negroes was shot in the back of the bead, but it was nut thought that be was mortally wounded, as he managed to carry himself off at a good rate of speed. The news ot rbe difficulty having reached the quarters where the s Jdiers were stationed, they immediately started fur the locality where the difficulty had oc curred. with their muskets at fixed bayonets. On leaching the ground no negroes were to be seen, end tne soldiers searched about for some time, in order to disc over, if possible, the whereabouts of one of the negroes whu had fired a revolver. They were, how ever, unable to find any traces of him. Several officers « juie up :o the men and got them together for the pur ple ot carrying them back to their quarters. Iu going back, the horse of one of the officers, who was mounted, happened to tread upon the heels of one of the soldiers.' He immediately wheeled about and dealt the officer u blow ou his right cheek bone with bis musket. The men were shortly got back to their quar ters. when quiet was ayaiti restored throughout the tVeseuln t ion. rapt. Atkins, the polite and attentive commander of the steamship San Salvador, was yesterday made the recipient of a handsome testimonial, from the passenger© who t ame out on the last trip. The testi monial consisted of a silver set, comprising a cup, kuifc and fork, napkin ring and spoon. As many of the passengers have left the city, the articles were left in charge of Mr. C. W. Bruner, who yesterday, in ■ ornpany with several other passengers by the San Salvador, waited on Capt. Atkins and made the pre sentation. The present was accepted by Capt. Atkins, who made a few appropriate remarks, and then enter- taiLc.i the donors, with a few invited guests, to par- , tuke ol a collation which was served up on board the steamer. This is a well-merited tribute to an officer who. since be has been running to this port, has merited the approbation of all who have travelled ■'* avigator, and always at- ficient evidence ui u«rsv..- . the defendant Monroe, th© c0 ^ waB turned over to Cresler, who eutered i»« 1)0,1(18 1D compliance with the law,‘for the fortl.<-o»d“S » rtha hor »° in ,aie further action vug»' b F tbe defellll!lut Before Juatire Levi S.
