His adherents have full faith that he will raise the staudard of revolt in Ire laud before another year. It is reported that General Sweeny intends to challenge Stephens as soon as he arrives in Now York. —A serious dispute has arisen between Governor Kennedy and the Legislative Assembly about the financial condition of the colony. The latter have telegraphed a petition to tho home Government ask ing, with a view to retrenchment, that the colony be united to British Colombia, believing that one gov ernment is sufficient for both colonies. —T vo sisters, teachers oi a young ladies’ school at Cape Girardeau, Mo., were arrested last Monday for teaching without taking the oath. Montgomery, Giles and Craig counties, in Virginia, are moving in a scheme to “anexl’ those counties to Western Virginia. The good old State, in her misfortunes, is still pursued and sought to be torn and mangled by those who should at least re spect her sorrows and her feelings. It is said, however, that the persona referred to are of the worst elass of the population, * and are not countenanced by the respectable Union men. -PrcfessOT Agassiz has addressed a letter to the manager ol Amazon Company of Brazil, in which lie points out the disabilities imposed upon emigrants to that country, and the difficulties which such set tlers encounter under tbe present laws of Brazil aud from the intermeddling of the authorities. He is of opinion that no large body of emigrants will go there until those obstacles are removed by appropriate legislation. A Race with a Blll.—Bom-'* forty years ago the managers of a race-course near Brownsville, on the M 1 -non gah el a, published a notice of a race one mile heats, on a particular day, for a purse of $100. “Free for anything with four legs and hair on.” A man in the neighborhood named Hayes, had a bull that lie was m the habit of riding to mill with his bag of corn, and he was determined to enter him for the race. He said nothing about it to any one, but he rode him around the track a number of times, on several moonlight nights, until the bull had the hang of the ground pretty well, and would keep the right course. Ho rode witn spurs, which the bull considered disa greeable; so much so that he always bellowed when they were applied to his flanks. On the morning of the race, Hayes came upon the ground on horseback—on his bull. Instead of a sad dle. he had a dried ox-lade, the head part of which, with the horns still on, he had placed on the bull's rump. lie c irried a short tin horn in his baud'. H-- -rode to the judge’s stand, and offered to enter his bull for the race; but the owners of the horses that wen- entered objected. A A Uavfc-s appealed to the terms of the notice, insisting that Lis null had ‘‘four legs and hair on” and that he had a right to cuter him. After a good deal of swear- idg, the judges declared themselves compelled to de- . cide that the bull had tbe right to run, aud was en tered accordingly. When the time for starting ar rived, the bull and horses took their places. The horse-racers were out of humor at being fcpthered with a bull, aud at the burlesque which they supposed was intended, but thought it would be over as soon as the horses stalled. When the signal was given they did start. Hayes gave a blast of his horn and sunk his spurs into the sides of the bull, which bounded off with a terrible bawl, at n<> trifling speed, the dried ox hide flapping up and down aud rattling at every jump, making a combination of sounds that had never been heard on a race-course before. Tho horses all flew from the track, every one seemiDg to be seized with a sudden determination to take the shortest cut to get out of the Redstone country and not one of them could be brought back in time to save their distance. The purs- was given to Hayes. A general row ensued, but the fun of the thing put the crowd on the side of the bull. The horsemeu contended that they were swindled out of their purse, and hao it not been for Hayes* horn and oxhide, which he ought, not to have been permitted to bring on the ground, the thing would not have turned out as it did. Upon this Hayes told them his bull could beat their horses anyhow, aud if they would put up a hundred dollars agaiiiHt the purse he had won he would take off the oxhide and leave tho tin horn, and run a fail?race with them. His offer was accepted and the money staked, thpj again took their places at the starting post, and tbe signal wm given. Hayes gave the bull another = L with the spur, and the bull gave a tremendous The horses, remembering the dreadful sound, thought all the rest was comiug as before. Away they went again in spite of the exertions of their riders, GREAT TONIC. THK BUST ADVERTISING MEDIUM IN THE STATE, ABU Tfce CHEAPEST PAPER In (lie STATE! TERMS: . Ik Salgfrlod, Pastor of Twelth Baptist Chuck. • A Bogus Fueedmen’s National Bank.— The Freedmen’s National Bank, a swindling institution established somewhere on the sea coast of South Carolina by an enterpris ing Boston lirrn, has come to grief. It ap pears to have been one ot the most bare-faced swindles ever practieed*eveu upon the much loved African. A correspondent of an ex change sa\ s that the notes were wretched lithographs, much resembling blacking box labels, but printed in gaudy colors, which captivated the eyes of the poor negroes. Each freednian who deposited a dollar green back in the bunk received a two dollar note of this gay, pictorial issue, and fancied of course that he was so much richer. This thing went on, under the eyes of the Freedmen’s Bureau, for some time, and no effort seems to have been made by the offi cers of that benign institution to interfere with the operations of the swindlers. Fi nally, however, a Captain Jewett, not of the Bureau, who was working a plantation in the vicinity, wrote to Washington on the sub ject. Unfortunately the proprietors of the bank -got wind of tkfcmattefrfrad decamped suddenly, getting Rafe off their booty which amounted to thousands of dollars. It ^s presnmabie that tin* have returned t o Bostou-to lecture possibly on the ^ of the negro and the dishonesty of the South ern whites. The two worthies whn trated this swindle are named Cl-. ,t Higgiuson. —.V. Y. Daily Ncms. *** Ufld Philadelphia, December 26,1863. Knsn.
