As the certain result of an early railroad connection of this eity with Florida and the probable imnriediate xtcn«ion of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad westward- y. beyond its present terminus ut Thomaavillc, the fade and population of ^lvanuah must increase rap- llly iu the next fev.- years And if ho, the question of h>u*e building. to meet the necessities which will aise from the accession ol the new elements of pro6- P«itj is entitled to lmuicdiate consideration. The lack o! an adequate supply of cheap and com- njdious tenement liounes, being a prime obstacle to tie advancement of any city, and a very serious iu- onvenience at the present time iu our own, the quea- :«iu cornea up, what is to be done to provide for the owing emergency? For several mouths past the in- |-»afficiciKy of tenement accommodations for the in- uguing population ol the city ha6 engaged the atten tion 01 all classes of our people, but we have not |l »rd that any satisfactory plan has been projocted for i.- solution of a question upon which depends, in a ...at measure, the future expauisou ot the population ,na business ot our beautiful city. refer to this subject, not to present any practical u.yostions of our own, tor we have none, but simply <j commend it to the attention of capitalists and me ti.tnics who are seeking opportunities to make money. Vt asouro these classes of men that by the coming • inter, it not earlier, at least one hundred capacious .le nient houses Will be required for the occoiumoda- |t;n,ot the increased popular mu of the city, for which tic highest reasonable rents will br paid. By the suo ceding winter as many more will be needed. We hope to sec inaugurated, at an early day, a sys Item ot improvement iu the line we have indicated Jthat will come up fully to the requirement** of our in- ■cre.isiiig population, and supply each and every family [with a pleasant and comfortable home. Under the op eration of such a system, honest labor, comfortably ro v ided for, judiciously encouraged and properly re united would assert its real nobility, aud idlsuess and otlagacy would become unfashionable, then odious, and finally disappear from our midst. Then, with the niled energies oi a large aud healthy population con centrated upon commerce aud manufactures in such a Iclimate. and at a poiut so peculiarly adapted by its geographical position, as a groat commercial centre, i future will be open to us! la/ureJy, the defendant for her appearance * ^6wvdrt-jnj- irrte q iOr~u.; ' «9*Wf*wdaa tt*£istrsvt<»%* Court iw ^bCH'vcrr eximir* 1 before Justice , ^ •a'oy yer'.tnrt.+j tncrnttic: The State ' A Fruroe* Me Dow «H • ni rod. charg • ith e’ealii.g ten dollars from m wus Bleeping Upon exasp fcso having bat*, proven j>& waa gaqmiv&Ao enter into bn before the City Court for trial- The Stole vs. Melissa Voter, end J«keon Bmxon. charged with stealing clothing! Patino Hxbself Off.—On Thursday morning last, a colored woman who was employed by Mr. William Swoll, aa a servant, commenced her service by wash ing several dozen pieces of clothing, consisting of dresses, shirts, towels, Ac. On yesterday morning she had them folded up neatly preparatory to ironing, when she suddenly became tired of work, and de camped, taking all the clothes with her, in payment for one day’s labor. The name of the woman was not known to Mr. Swoll, but as it is probable she may offer some of the stolen articles for sale, any person giving information will confer a favor upon the loser. The woman had a blemish in the left eye, the only mark observable about her. Installment of OQIcers.—At a regular meeting of Joseph Lodge, No. 76,1. O. B. This city has lor many years been second to no ether in the South for the large supply of flue fruits cgeuibles which are constantly brought to its narket. The fruits consisting of apples, peaches and pears brought from the interior ol the 9tate aud the bounties adjoining this city, aro large, luscious and ell developed, and are shipped in Immense quantities Ito the northern markets, where they find a ready sale ; remunerative prices to the shipper. With melons, * well as vegetables of every description—of which litre is also an abundance shipped North by every pteaiuer—our market is well supplied from the ous uu i well attended gardens on the outskirts city. Since the close of the war the vegetable gardens, which are principally owned and cultivated intelligent Germans, with some few exceptions, ve increased two-fold, as we would infer from tbs microtis urnl well stocked stands iu the vegetable partment ot the old as well as in the new wing cvntly erected on the cast side of the market. We •ti-e that twelve now stands have already been ectedau the new wing, which are used for the dis- >sal oi vegetables, and we learn that there is an ibundato t- a applications for the occupancy of the uflmshcd stand--, which will soon be completed and bnaute 1 without leaving any of the old vegetable ? vacant. Notwithstanding the plentiful supply •h- and vegetables, a great many persons think it old mle of supply and demand does not work i this « ase, as they seem to think that tile sup- ing .-umndant prices ought to recede. It should ne in mind that the demand is fully equal to the Ripply, lor what eunuot be disposed of to »ooa me uunt at this market, can be readily shipped North, c the advantage of the gardener. :Hayor’s Court.
