The Daily News adj Herald SAVANNAH, MONDAY, TCjjt 9, 1866. rrromiteN. O. Sunday Clines.] Bob White. BY J. A. FIELD. A Glorious Result D&v after dav a voice was heard From woodland and from meadow . From stubby field and quiet lane. And from the white bay hollow. Two clear emphatic notes were wo exeat, empuorvav. —— . . Our waiting ears had grecte . Two plaintive calla, at inter' ala, Hcart-broKingly repeated. Then tnemqry told of Persia's maid, lu Loudon's crowded city. Whose cries of “ Gilbert, Gilbert,” woke All hearts to tender pity. No other English word she know, No other word she needed ; The lost was found, the lover won— The past was all unheeded. Thus thinking, came a bird and perched Upon the old gra£ railing ; “ Bdb White, Bob White,” its constant cry. But, oh, how unavailing. With timid air she looked around. Her anxious fears revealing ; For here perhaps the truant lay. His guilty head concealing. She Hew where weeds luxuriant grew In thick and tangled masses ; Threaded with cautious, silent step*. Their labyrinthine passes ; Went in and out beneath the vines Where yellow buds wore blowing. And peeped beneath the waving Of ferns in beauty growing. Familiarly flbo called him—Bob ! There came no answering token ; In vain she listened, vainly looked, The silence lay unbroken. Once more she took her weary flight, Her sinking heart embittered. And leaned above her brood to hear The feeble notes they twittered. LikeHiuman bipeds, Robert White, Are you a restless rover ? A tickle, dark, false-hearted one ¥ A general bird-lover ? You cannot lind an eye more bright, A breast more true and tender, Though others boast a richer garb, Of gaudy tropic splendor. Return to you allegiance, Bob, Beplume again your piuions ; No lovelier than your grieving mate Flies in the bird domiuions. Return to your grass sheltered nest, To calm content and duty, And learn true love is worth far more Than showy outside beauty. IN GE\BltAL. —Brig.-Gen. Adams, Capt. Van Pelt aud Capt. Jcnks, all of the Duion army, who have beta cultivating a plantation on the Mississippi river, were receutly attacked in their beds by a band of ruffians, and robbed of a large amouut of money and many valua bles. Others of the band in the meantime busied themselves iu killing the stock in the barn, which being discovered by the negroes on the plantation, a fight ensued, in which five of the negroes were killed. 1 The robbers succeeded in burning the outbuildings, in cluding the cotton gin and engines. —At the celebration of the Fourth of July at Philadelphia, Major General Meade was pre sented by the Union League of that city with a gold medal. Sur rounding the head is inscribed in Roman letters, “July 4, 1866. To Major General Meade, by the Union League of Philadelphia, as a token of the gratitude of his contrymen. On the reverse side is an elaborate artistic design, surrounded with the words: “The victor of Gettysburg, the deliverer of our State, the faithful soldier of our country.” — The steamer Only Chance, from Fort Benton, June 15, arrived at St. Joseph ou Saturday last, with $85,000 in gold dust- Tbree thousand hostile Indians were en camped within fifteen miles of the Fort, and small parties of warriors were seen on the road daily, but no depredations had been committed. A shot struck a young man in the left breast, inflicting a mortal wound, and others are reported wounded. —Washington dispatches state that Ex" Governor Pratt, coudscI for Mr. Davis, has had another interview with the President, and again urged the release of bis client or his removal to another place. Since then her father has died, leaving her some Lbree hundred thousand dollars.
