/ The Daily News and Herald . SAVANNAH. SATURDAY. JULY 14. 1866. [From the New York Kuickerbocker.J -True to the tart.” I We give the following pathetic-verses to onr read ers. premising that they were written upou “‘ ‘“‘T dent which occurred in the last battle ot one of the author's friends. Having a forebodtug of hia fc e, he penciled on the plating of the scabbard the name of his ladv love, and the words, "lu the face of death mv thoughts are thine. - ’ A faithful .ouirade remc.ted front his bodj’ and bore to the weeping maiden this sad token of his constancy. Colonel W ■Stewart tiaw- kios. of Tennessee, ie one of the most chitalrous and accomplished gentlemen of the South, aod though a foeman. he has won the esteem of hia opponents on the field, and his captors while in prison, by his no ble and manly spirit, bis gallant and generous bear ing. He is very youthful, and with the enthusiasm ot his years, seems to unite in himself the literary tastes of Sidney, the valor of Bayard, and the endurance of Roderick.] The bugles blow the battle call, And through the camp each stalwart band. To-day his serried .col nmns forms. To tight for God and native laud! Brave men are marching by my side. Our banners Hosting glad and free, Hut yet amidst the brilliant scene I give my thoughts to thee! The horsemen dashing to and fro— The drums with wild and thunderous roll— The sights and sounds—all things that tend To kindle valor in the soul; Theso all are here—but in the maze Of squadrons moved with valiant glee 1 Still true to every vow we made, I give my thoughts to thee. The deep booms smite the troubled air. Each throb proclaims the foemau near. And faintly echoed from the fronr. I hear my gallant comrades cheer. Wild joys of heroes marching on Through blood their glorious land to tree! 1 give to freedom here my life— But all my thoughts to thee! And yet, beloved, I must not think What undreamed bliss may soon be thine, It would uuuian me in the work of guarding well our couutrv's shrine, Here on ibis sword 1 write my*troth; These words shall yet thy solace be. They'll tell how in this last fierce hour I gave my thoughts to thee. Along the East the holy morn Renews life'a.many cares and joys; Tills hour I hope some wish for me Thy pure and tender prayers employs. Another beauteous dawn of light These eyes alas may never Bee; But even dying, faint and maimed, I still would tnink of thee. And then in coming years that roll. tVheu scenes oi peace and brightness throng, And 'round each happy hour is twined The wreaths of friendship, love and song, Go to the grave whose heart was thiuo, And by that spot a mourner bc- ' me tear for biru thy loved and lost. Whose last thought clung to thee! Your am bitious warrior U for carrying his way with the sabre; your aspiring politician for scheming his way by intrigue and consummate art. Jonas ft Evans, GentlemenI have recently been laboring under the distressing effects of indigestion, aacompanied by . prostration ofthe nervoo. system. Numerous rem edies were recommended by friends and some of them tested, hot without relier. Your Hooflland's German Bitters were recommended by pereons who had tried i hem and whose favorable mention of the Bitters in duced me also to try them. I moat confess that I bail an aversion to patent medicines, from the "thousand and one" quack “BitUra," whose only aim seems to ne to palm off sweetened and dragged liquor upon the community, in a sly way 1 and the tendency of which, 1 fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal preparation, l took it with happy effect.
