POSMS
BY CECIf’ OBAY,
Lov«
I.
The shadows fall down silently
Upon the calm and brilliant snow,
Aud as the m*»on ascends on high
They grow
Shorter and nearer to the tree
Which ca9tthem out so long and free.
Like love, where all is loveliness.
Which trouble shortens none the less.
When hearts are young and faces fair.
Nature must votive offerings seal—
Love—mad o’er some fond sigh or tear,
We feel
That we all,'every hope would give
To please the girl for whom we live;
But worn away, with toil perchance,
Aud conjugal extravagance.
We change, love’s .shadow left to bless,
Aud even that grows daily less.
Farewell. ‘
We say, “Farewell!”
But not as those whom distant seas divide.
Though boundless, unseen «eas may roll between
With sparkling waters, foam encrusted tide,
Which sometimes in this life do intervene,
Dark, heaving, turbulent aud wide,
To close the fitful scene!
II.
i say, “Farewell!”
As flower.-, when the soft evening twilights give
Each leaf they touch a fair aud golden hue,
Then fall asleep, not dead, for still they live,
Aud waken on the morning bright with dew—
So we, with all their modesty would giva
A kiud. heartfelt “Adieu I”
In Greneral.
—Desmond Ryau receutly wrote in the London

in her voice the lark is thrilling—
Now to weep the heart is willing!
Aud now with joy and light 'tis filling*
Praised, admired, two worlds all hail her-
Artless, pure, no tongues assail her! :
Treasured friends cau never fail her!
Tell me, sooth, whose praise all that is '■
