Mr. Allen bad bis back turned to Craney, with the

myself, Whitfield aud lour men followed the wagon;
persons seeing the excitement also came in the
crowd; ouo man suug out, “Why don’t you shoot
him?” Whitfield replied, “Keep quiet, wo don’t want
to shoot him, but only w/;ut to keep in sight of them
until they get up town; a man came out of Margaret
street and turned the corner aud followed the wagon;
aud also shot after the wagon; at that moment I saw
Mr. Allen raise the gun and fire at Whitfield; looked
arouud to see where the niau was who fired the first
shot and I saw Whitfield fall after running eight or
ten paces; I saw a colored man run up to Whitfield
and jerk a pistol out of Whitfield’s band or side,I can't
say; 1 ran up to Whitfield and the man who took his
pistol went in pursuit of tlie wagon; i caught hold of
Whitfield and then looked up and saw the man who
took Whitfield’s pistol snapping it at Allen and Craney
in the wagon.
Cross-examined.—1 think Allen helped Craney in
tho wagon, because Crauev was not sober: I don't
know whether it was Allen and Craney that had the
two guns at Allen’s house, as they were only pointed
out the door, aud i could not see who held them; none
of us tried to arrest Mr. Allen or Craney, we were
merely following them until we could get a policeman;
Mr. Allen did not fire until fie heard the colored man
tiro who came out Margaret street; I think when Mr.
Allen fired he took aim at Whitfield; 1 beard Allen
tell Whitfield that if In* followed him he would kill
him; Whitfield continued to follow him for about
twenty minutes after ; 1 don’t know the precise num
ber of persons who followed the wagon; I did not see
Whitfield c.Oiiii pistol at Mr. Allen’s breast; I did not
see Whitfield draw his pistol but once, aDd that was
near the railroad, when Mr. Allen first drew the gun
on him; Mr. Allen called Wliiifield a black son of a
b—h. and told him if he followed him when lie left
his bouse he wouldkili him.
William T Walker (colored;, sworn, says:—I and
Whitfield were together near the Central Railroad de
pot; a colored boy came and told us there were some
white men and a colored man lighting near by; when
we got there I saw Mr. Allen holding some person,
who I thought was Mr. Craney; Mr. Craney managed
to getaway from Mr. Allen and struck tho colored
man; Mr. Allen then caught hold of Mr. Craney and
pulled him away ; a white man came up and said they
had killed the colored man, and I then told Whitfield
1 would go and call a policeman; I went off for a po
liceman, and when I returned the parties liad all gone
with the exception of the colored mail who hed been
beaten; I went on in the direction they went, and
when I got to Mr. Allen’s house I saw some ten or
twelve standing about there, I saw Whitfield there and
told him 1 could find no policeman; Whitfield was
standing on the corner of Falim and New streets, with
Edward Mulligan; 1 saw Mr. Allen then standing near
his porch, with two guns; Whitfield then asked me to
go and look for a policeman up on New street; when
I came back there was a crowd of about fifty standing
on Falim street; Mr. Craney, Alien, Whitfield and the
other persons had gone. 1 don’t know anything of the
snooting.

Mayor’s Court.
His Honor Mayor Anderson had but lew cases to dis
pose of 3*esierday, on t iking his seat, after an absence
of several weeks. The first case called was that of
Thomas Golding and William AIcAllister, two colored
boys, who had assaulted a white boy ou the streets, on
Monday last, with sticks and brickbats, injuring him
so severely that the attendance of a physician was ne
cessary. On calling the case the white boy did not
appear to prosecute, probably being unable from the
injuries he received; whereupon His Honor rcpianded
tho negro boys to the barracks, until it could be as
certained whether the injured white bo3- failed to ap
pear on account of the injuries received, or whether
through negligence. If found to be the latter, the
prisoners were ordered to be released.
Edward Owens, (colored,! charged with c*eating a
nuisance under the arches, on the north side of Bay
street, was ordered not only to abate the same, but to
clean the arches out for the entire length of the block,
and when the same was completed to report the fact to
His Honor. Iu default, the prisoner was to pay a fine
of five dollars and costs.
During the absence of the Alayor. several ol tho city
guardians, not aoting according to rules and regula
tions, had a hearing in His Honor’s office.

Hca*B8. Kcrro«i-jn your murk* yutwday about
the cholera, you aay that “it is prudent to ke*p about
the person- some Dimple astringent, to be used with
discretion, if there seems to be any inclkuttou to
diarrhoea,” at a aeaeon when complainta of thU char
acter are so common, and which open the way as o-
perinducing causes for the introduction of the dreaded
pestilence. I concur with you in this suggestion, and’
beg leave to recommend through your columns to the
poor of this city e prescription which is equally effica
cious in the first stage of Aaiatic cholera, and in all
stages of cholera morbus, cholera Inlkntum, and the
various forms of acute diarrhoea, commonly classed
as "-Bummer complaints,” the latter of which will
soon become prevalent from the incautious eating of
the immense quantities of unhealthy melons aud other
traah now hawked in the markets and through the
streets of our city.
The following is a simple and most efficacious mix
ture: Laudanum, 2 ounces; tincture of capsicum, **
ounce; tincture of ginger, 1 ounce; essence of pepper
mint, 2 ounces; Hoffman's anodyne, 2 ounces. If the
anodyne cannot be readily obtained, substitute sul
phuric ether—half the quantity—mix thoroughly, and
shake well every time it is used; give or take iroiu ten
to twenty -five drops, according to age, condition and
violence ol the attack: repeat every twenty minutes
till relief is obtained; in a desperate case, take a table
spoon full at once; take it in equal quantity of water,
and lie on the back quietl3* till it has full opportunity
to work. Laborers should carry a small vial in their
pocket, with a few lumps of white sugar, upon which
to drop it, to be used in certain emergencies. This is
a harmless remedy, even if used when no serious oc
casion exists.
Why is it, Messrs. Editors, that you have not urged
upon the city authorities the importance, as a sanitary
measure, of erecting free baths iu the city. It has
been done in nearly all the Northern cities, and medi
cal men of eminence say that nothing will contribute
more to ths general health of a community than these
life-preserving public conveniences. Two months ago
the city government of Boston appropriated ten thou
sand dollars for the purpose of establishing free baths,
and ten arc uow erected and in full operation. They
arc used by both sexes of the poorer classes, with the
happiest results. Let us havs free bathing houses in
Savannah. Will the City Council, and the working
men, when returning from a hot day’s work, think of
this proposition when they pine for a bath? If so it
will be adopted.
Georgia Academy for the Blind.
Mr. W. D. Williams, the Principal of the Georgia
Academy for tho Blind, a State institution, located at
Macon, is in the city, stopping at the Pulaski House,
for tho purpose of hunting up any blind youth that
may bo in this city or neighboring parts of the State,
with the view of securing their admission as pupils in
said institution. Air. Williams can be seen to-day at
the hotel, or at the Court Houm. Any person know
ing tho existence of any one of this class is requested
to report the same to him, or to P. Af. Russell, Esq.
Mr. Williams has with him one of his pupils, and is pre
pared by a fit examination of the efficiency of tho mode
of instruction of the blind, to remove any distrust or
doubts that may arise in the minds of parties who
have never witnessed an exhibition of the same.
AIaqistrate’s Court.—The following eases were
yesterday disposed before the Magistrates uamed:

Jeffers, charged with the offence of larceny from tho

Sarah and Alary Ann Jenkins, (both colored,) charged
with a breach of peace. Upon examination,Sarah was
*held in bonds of $200. There not being sufficient evi
dence against Mary Ann Jenkins, she was discharged.

Excitement on Bay Street anil Vicinity.
About half-past eight o’clock last evening considera
ble excitement was created by a large crowd who were
in pursuit of two negroes who had attempted to rob
the carpenter shop of Messrs. Killoran A Alurphy,
situated on Bay lane in rear of the City Hotel. It ap
pears that the negroes had managed to raise the latch
of the carpenter shop door, through which they en
tered, with a large trunk, containing nearly half a box
of tobacco, several razors, razor straps, thread, needles,
and sundry other articles. The trunk also contained
two manifests of the schooner Oramoneta, besides
several letters addressed to Capt. Alartin Ryan, of that
vessel. The trunk and contents had evidently been
stolen by tho negroes, and not being very full, it is
supposed they had taken it inio the carpenter shop for
the purpose of getting a supply of tools. Mr. Killoran,
who sleeps up stairs in a back room of the front
building, was sitting at tho window, and observing a
light in the carpenter shop, took oft* his shoes
aud came down quietly. After crossing the yard to
the carpenter shop, he placed his hand lightly on tho
latch, while trying to observe who was inside. This
startled the negroes, and while one of them blew the
light out the other braced against the door. Mr.
Killovan, however, gave a heav3 r shove against the
door and threw it open, when the negroes, after
falling over nail kegs and lumber, managed to get
out of the door on Bay lane, through which they
en tered.
The negroes were followed down Bay lane by Mr.
Killoran, halloaing to stop the thief. The negroes,
after running through a crowd ot white men standing
on the comer of Ba}* lane and Bull street, immediately
• v ook up the cry of “stop thief,” and made more noise
thaa their pursuers. They were followed tb the north
side of Bay streei. east of the Exchange, where they
jumped over the iron railing on to the stones below, a
distance of over twenty feet. The pursuers, having
a little more, regard for their necks, went some
around to the slope of the hill, and others down the
sl epa. By this time the negroes had managed to es-
by prseing under the arches iu the dftrk. Several
exciting races then took place under the bill, by the
the CrtI1 l,artiC8 in pursuit. Each taking the other in
