FROM NEW YORK
At Quarantine, vvitli Cholera on Boards
The steamship .San Salvador, ('apt. Joshua Atkins,
from New York, with four lmudred ami sevonty-tliree
troops, besides a number of iiasseugers, reported to
tbe quarantine ship at Hilton Head at six o clock yea-
terday morning. The Captain reported that he was out
of water aud bad a lar;e number ol troops on board
which he desired to land and thou take a clearance for
Savannah on learning that there had been two
deaths from
cholera on board, permission to land the
troops was refused, and the Captain was told to go to
Braddocks Foint. where there is a large number of
tents standing.
Captain Atkins stated that his vessel was drawing
too much water to go to Brad dock’s l’oint, and he
headed in the direction of Savannah. At lour o’clock
Captain J. B. Rife, of the Sixth United States
Infantry, commanding post of Hilton Head, and
Brevet Major Philip C. Davis, U. S. Army, started
with the steamer Sampsou after the San Salvador,
to prevent her from coming to Savannah without
conforming to the quarantine regulations. On arriv-
iug at Tybee, the whistle of the s.«mpson was blown
and the Quarantine Officer went on board. There
being no medicine down there, the officers on board
tho Sampson took all ihe medicine they had on board
and furnished it lo the Quarantine Officer. The
Sampson was then headed for Savannah lor the pur
pose of informing the Health Officer and proper au
thorities of tiie condition of things, and also that
there was no medicine on board the ship except what
they had given. The Sampson arrived here about
eight o’clock last evening, aud when she left the San
Salvador there had been, up to five o’clock yesterday
afternoon, but three deaths from cholera. There were
some fifteen or twenty other cases, and their recovery
was considered doubtful. The cholera was confined
entirely to the troops, all of whom, sick and well,
have been landed on Tybee Island. When the Samp-
ssn left the troops had large fires built aud wero
lumigating their encampment.
The steamer <_>. IU. Petit aud the a teaming E. H.
Webster went down yesterday afternoon, the latter
with provisions for the troops. We learn by the re
turn of these steamers that six or eight deaths had
occurred altogether since the San Salvador left New
York. The names of the passengers b3 the San Salva
dor will be found in another column.
Mayor’s Court.
Before His Honor the Mayor, E. C. Anderson, the
following cases were brought up yesterday :
John O’Neil was charged with improper conduct,
drunk aud lyiug in the streets, also with entering the
store of Mr. Whitmore, and stealing sundry articles
of grocery. The prisoner stated in his defence that
he had been in the store before to trade, and on this
occasion went in and took two drinks, some oranges
and a piece of castile soap, thinking that he had a ten
dollar bill in liis coat pocket, on st arching for the
money he discovered that he had on his other coat,
or wasratherin his shirt sleeves, minus the ten dol
lars. As he hai traded there before, it was no offence
to take what he did, without paying tor them. His
statement however not being very satisfactory, he
was fined five dollars and ordered to restore the pro
perty, and in default of payment of the fine, to be
sent to jail.
Mary Kelly aad Ann Colgeo, charged with improper
conduct—committing a nuisance in the market—were
fined five doliats each.
Ann Lake, charged with being a vagrant and con
tinually hanging about the market, was fined ten dol
lars, or to be sent to jail for thirty days.
Helen King aid Susan Templeton, charged with im
proper conductiu the market—cursing and swearing,
and attempting lo have each other arrested—were fined
$10 each, or bo tonflued in jail lor thirty- days.
If ever there vas a party who deserved employment
in a workhouse, it is the five characters above men
tioned, as it seems fines and imx^risoument have no
etlect upan thfir morals. Not only is the city and
county put to expense in feeding them in idleness, but
they are a general nuisance to the city aud a bother to
the police, who lave to leave their wards for the purpose
of conveying Ihem aud other such c haracters to the
police barrack*
A. Barnard (dolored,) an old offender, charged with
stealing at tha market, was sentenced to the chain
gang for thirty days. Barnard aud another man, it
appears, bougll a quart of tomatoes from a colored
woman, and while she had her back turued Barnard’s
accomplice made off with a melon. The colored woman,
however, missed the melon while Barnard was at
tempting to steal another, and collared him, and was
walking into him in regular pugilistic style when
they were both arrested bj- the police and conveyed to
the Police Barracks. The colored woman, beiug justi- !
fiable for what she did, was discharged.
