The Daily News and Herald. SAVANNAH. FRIDAY, JULY 20, 1866. A MAN’S A MAN FOR A’ THAT—A N£A1 VERSION. FROM BLACKWOOD. I. “A man's a man,” says Robert Burns. -For a' that ami a' that;" But though the song be dear aud strong. It lacks a note for a’ that. The lout who’d shirk his daily work. Yet claim bis wages and a* that. Or. beg. when he might earn his bread. Is not a man for a* that. II. If all who dine on homely fare Were true aud brave, and a’ that. And none whose garb is “holden grey," Was fool aud knave, and a’ that. The vice and crime that shame our time Would fvie and tail and a’ that. And ploughman be as good as kings, Aud churls as earls for a* that. III. You see yon brawny, blustering sot. Who swaggers, swears, and a’ that. Aud thinks because his strong right arm Might fell an ox and a' that, That he’s as noble, man for man. As duke or lord, and a' that; He's but a brute, beyond dispute. And not a man fora' that. IV. A man may own a large estate, Have palace, park, and a’ that, Aud uot for birth, but honest worth, Be thrice a man for a* that: And Donald herding on the muir, Who beats his wife aud a’ that, Be nothing but a rascal boor, Nor halt a man for a' that. V. it cornea to this, dear Robert Burns — The truth is old, aud a' that, ‘•The rank i8 but the guinea s stamp, The men’s the gold for a' that." And though you’d put the minted mark On copper, hrass, and a' that— The lie is gross, the cheat is plain, Add will not pass for a’ that. VI. For a’ that, aud a' that, 'Tis soul and heart aud a’ that, Thar makes the king a gentleman, And not his crown and a’ that. And man with man, if rich or poor, The best is ho, for a’ that. Who atands erect, in self-respect. Aud acts the man tor a’ that. Charles Mackat. In Greneral. —A letter from a Brazilian officer describe -ome of the beauties of soldiering in South America: ‘-Amphibious creatures abound, In my own tent 1 have already killed four snakes. Every morning I find myself accom panied by a body-guard of fifteen or twenty monstrous toads, which have quietly spent the night under the comers of the hides that serve me as a bed. Enormous alligators promenade regularly from lake to lake even- night. In a Major’s tent, the other day, one was killed that measured about six feet in length, anil an unfortunate Brazilian soldier was unexpectedly taken off his legs by one oi thesejhorrible creatures aud carried into one of th^.nearest lakes.” —There were in the United States, in Sep tember, 1885, 593 railroad companies, with nearly 3G,0UU miles of railway, aud spending for actual expenses ?1,286,338,000. (recently rejected as Postmaster of Bal timore. ) Gov. Swann. Ex-Governor Pratt, Keverdy Johnson, and Benjamin G. Harris, will be among the representatives sent to the- Philadelphia Convention to represent the State of Maryland. —The New Yelk Tribune says: “ It stated, we know not with what truth, that General John A. Dix has written a letter favoring the Philadelphia Convention, and will probably be a member of it The Ex press so understands the matter: but we shall wait before we quite believe that Gen. Dix has surrendered his sword.” —In Augusta, on Tuesday, the notorious .1. E. Bryant, editor of the Loyal Georgian, underwent an examination before a bench of Magistrates, on a charge of larceny after a trust reposed. The examination resulted in Bryant’s being held ’to bail in the sum of -■5.000 to appear at the next term of the Su perior Court. —Concha is said to have carried away $3,- 000,000 from Cuba.
