>4*> >y*i** hwmSSmmi The Daily News fid Herald; SAVANNAH, SATURDAY, "tULY af 1866. A Poem from file Spirit of Edgftr A* Poe. |The following remarkable po9iu, originally spoken by Miss Potou, at the conclusion of one of ber “so- called” trance lectures, purports to come from the spirit of Edgar A. Poe.] From the throne of life eternal. From the home of love eternal, Where the angel feet make music over all the starry floor, Mortals, I have come to meet you, Come with words of love to greet you, Aud to tell you of the glory that is mine forevermore. Once before I found a mortal, Waiting at the Heavenly portal— Waiting but to catch the echo from that ever opening door; • Aud I spizod his qnickened being. And through all his inward seeing, Caused my burning aspiration in a fiery flood to ponr. Now t come more meekly human, And the weak lips of a woman Touch with lire from off the alter—not with Imrniugs as ol yore; But in holy love descending. With her chastened being blending, 1 would fill your soul with music from the bright celes tial shore. As one heart yearns for another, As a child turns to its mother— From tne golden gates of glory, turn I to the earth onec more; Where I drained the cup of sadness, Where my soul was stung to madness And life’s bitter, burning, billows swept my burdened being o'er. Here the harpies and the ravens, Human vauipiros—aorded cravens. Preyed upon my soul and substance till I writhed in anguish sore. Life aud I then seemed mismated, For I felt accursed and fated. Like a restless, wrathful spirit wandering on the Sty gian shore. Tortured by a nameless yearning. Like a frost-fire—ireeziug, burning - Ihd the purple, pulsing life-tide, thro’ its fever chan neis pour, Till the golden bowl—life’s token— Into sbiuing shred* was broken, And my chained and chafing spirit leapt from out my prison doer. But while living, striving, dying— Never did my «oul cease crying— “Ye, who guide the Fates and Furies' give. Oh, give • me, I implore From the myriad hosts of nations, From the countless constellations, One pure spirit that can love me; one that I too can adore !’* Though this fervent aspiration Found my fainting soul salvation; Ffii from out its blackened tire-crypts, did my restiess spirit soar— And n:y beautiful ideal. Not too saintly to be real, Burst more brightly on my vision than tuo fancy formed Leuorc. 'Mid the surging seas she found me. With the billows breaking ’round me, And my saddened, sinking spirit, in her arms of love upbore; Like a lone one weak and weary. Wandering in the midnight dreary, On her sinless, saintly bosom brought me to the Hea venly shore. Like the breath ol blossoms blending. Like the prayers of saints ascending, 1.1L h th« rainbow’s seven hued glory blend our souls forevermore; Earthly love and lust enslaved me, But Divines t love lias saved me, And 1 know now first and only, bow to love aud t- adore. O, my mortal friends and brothers, We are«each aud all another's. And the soul that gives most freely from its treasure hath the more; Would you lose your life—you find it, Aud in giving love you bind it, Like an amulet of safety ou yonr heart forevermore ■e* Magazines, Newspapers, &c< f AND Fix General- — i tie tea drinkers of this country consume 30,000,000 pounds annually. —-Stewarts Fifth avenue residence will, cost ?2,500.000. —A St. Paul papci advances as an argu ment for building a railroad, that the Missis- -ippi river is dlying up year by year. —A man killed himself in ’Ohio because his wardrobe was sei.-ed as. security for his board bill. —Generals Beauregard and Toombs, Jacob Thompson aud George Sanders, of the late Confederacy, were in Paris on the 29th ult. —The X.
