Guerillas have been quite near to Vera Cruz. —New York city thus tar has subscribed over $100,000 for the Portland sufferers. —Congress has appropriated $50,000 foi the relief of the sbffcrers by the Portland fire. —Vesuvius is in labor. The vole mo is thundering and the crater emits an enormous volume of fire. —An expedition of the Governor and (State officers of New Mexico is abont to explore the head waters of the Gila river. —It is said that Willhuu B. Reed, of Penn sylvania, is to be appointed to the Cabinet, in place of Mr. Speed. —A Charleston paper asserts that a New York company has subscribed five million dollars to build an “air-line” between Atlanta and Charlotte, N. C. —Three British gunboats, for service on the lakes, have arrived in the St. Lawrence. The forces stationed at Port Erie have gone to St. Catharine’s. —A young lady in Meade township, Pa., recently killed a young, man whom she loved, but who did not love her, by placing “love powders” in his food. —General Bradley T. Johnson, a distin guished officer in the late Confederate ser vice, has settled in Richmond. Ya.. aud en tered upon the practice of law —The City Treasurer of Lowell, Mass., has been restrained by the Supreme Court from paying money appropriated for tin: relief o( the Portlanders —Captain George Buckley was shot aud killed at a barbecue, iu Henry county, Ken tacky, last, Saturday, by a man named Jacol Stewart. Woodruff, formerly a mer chant at Grenada, Miss., has been arrested by telegraphic order of General Thumus, on the charges of participation in the assassina tion of Lieut. Blanche at (hat place lost April. —If our readers knew bgw excruciating it is to sweat over a pile of exchanges under the gas light these hot nights, they would look upon eachjissue of a morning paper, in spite of all its imperfections, as a miracle. —A plan is on foot among a certain clique of New York politicians to. in An General Daniel E. He has been written to on the sub ject, and is understood to be w illing to make the canvass. —Two counterfeiters were arrested at Chat tanooga last Saturday afternoon, having in their possession $8,000 in twenties on the National Bank of New Albany, Indiana.— They were excellently engraved,’ but the paper was thinner than the genuine. —John Bright leads a bachelor's life Id London, living alone in two small rooms in the moat democtaticmanner imaginable; but he has a comfortable, though moderate home at Rochdale, and a wife and young family, who always take him away from the metrop olis when he has a few hoars to spare. —It will be interesting to. a large number of ex-officers of the army to know that Con gress has finally passed the act giving three months’ extra pay proper to all volunteer officers below the rank of brigadier general who were in the military service March 3, 1865, and were discharged after April 9 of the same year. —If the human race were to be judged by the ready sympathy aud help extended to the sufferers by the Portland fire, we should say the human race had never fallen: if by the greed and selfishness prowling for booty among the ruins, we should say it had never risen, and never could rise. The individual, like the race, must be taken good and bail together.—The Nation. —A huge practical joke, which will last a year, was lately played at Buffalo.
