The Daily News and Herald. SAVANNAH. FRIDAY, JULY 27. 1866. 4a*ranti^> * [For the Savannah News amp Heram. 1 •■Sweet are the uses ol adversity" The poet sings. And poets tell but truth; Sweet to have blessings in diversity. Especially in days of hope and youth; And, therefore, sweet it flust be, having seen And felt old ocean’s storms, to rest in quarantine. And then the spot! Tybee is not as "lone As Whittier said it was awhile ago; Not all the lordly pelicans are gone, Nor yet the light-houA, though it’s come to wo; And Cholera, too, has found a home upon the beach, Convenient neighbor! quite within our reach. Changes have come since Gilmore’s angels spoke So fervently, one sunny April day; And iron messengers from clouds of smoke Have all been laid aside, or passed away. Though Fort Pulaski frowns as grimly as before. And the same tidal anthem rolls along the shore. Each nation has its colors: our new flag Is neither red nor white, but dingy yellow, Sans cross, or eagle,—honestly a rag! A lazaretto’s is its only fellow The Gods forbidttlSt we should cherish pride In bunting like to this, so meanly dyed. ^Miscellaneous. . ^ * Congress Spring Water. Empire Spring Water. EMPIRE WATER Is it a kind of sympathy which tints These dirty waters with a kindred hne, AS if to give us aggravating hints ilOf what we lost by leaving waves so blue, Where we were free, at least to live or die. Without the doctors telling how, or why ? Ah, well) Each evil finds its ultimate At last; and compensation, too, is mixed in lair proportion, in the cup of fate; At least I’ve heard these things are fixed, ( Vide Tupper)—possibly he’d never secu Or felt the bitter-sweet of quarantine. All hail the Salvador! if we must stay For thirty days where only sharks abound 1 Thanks, too, that doctors cannot have their way gin all things—that the larder is well found I And—most consoling fact—though we are sinners. The night, with her sable pinions, Is hovering oe’r the earth, And far through her dark dominions Ring tinkling tone9 of mirth; The moon is no longer beaming. And clouds are all star-proof, As I ait in my chamber, dreaming Of the rain upon the roof. Theresia no sound diurnal E'er yields me such delight As the step of th# soft rain vernal On the rattling roof at night ; 1 am wrapped in pleasant fancies, While slumber is far aloof, As 1 list to the dainty dances Of the rain upon the roof. The wind is awake and dashing The drops on the window pane. And the leaves like cymbals clashing. Keep time with the rythmic rain; But no discordant clatter Of a solitary hoof Comes now to mar the patter Of the rain upon the root. From the night so grim and sooty Will a morning fair arise, With myriad forms of beauty To glad our wonderiug eyes; For the Spirit of Spring is working At her marvellous web and .woof. And a part of her spell is lurking In the rain upon the roof. It brings to me a vision Of hours and fruitful trees, In a land that seems elysian, Ali alive with birds and bee9; Where sweetest songs are gushing Aloud, without reproof, And the rippling rills are rushing, Like the rain upon the roof. 1 see the grain grow greener For the blessing of the skies, That makes man'9 face serener. And lights with joy his eyes; 1 anticipated the pleasure Heaven grants for his behoof. And my heart leaps to the measure Of the rain upon the roof. Thus do I muse and listen To the music of the rain, Whose drops innumerous glisten Like diamonds through the pane;’ And I’m wrapped in pleasant fancies, While slumber i9 far aloof, A9 1 list to the dainty dances Of the rain upon the roof.
