He waa in the Confederate army, being promoted to a Brigadiership. —It is reported that the duty of removing obnoxious Federal office-holders ha9 been given over to Col. Cooper, the President's Private Secretary. —General T. C. Hindman wrote a long i letter to the New York News from Orizaba, Mexico, indignantly replying to Foote’s charges in the latter’s history of the rebel lion. T vc„], h :? J. , —The Albany Evening Journal, of the 20th iust., contains a list of lands in the State of New York, to be sold for arrears of taxes, which is twenty-eight columns of nonpareil type in length. —Official reports of the battle at C’amargo, Mexico, show that ol' the 270 Austrians en gaged, 130 were killed, including all the offi cers; 126 taken prisonws, and the remaining fourteen missing. —A Boston newspaper announces that George Peabody intends to bestow $50,000 each upon Harvard, Amherst and Williams Colleges, of Massachusetts, and the sum ol $1,000,000 upon Boston for homes for the poor. —Italy refuses to acknowledge the cession of Veoetia to France, and her forces have again crossed the Po. It is hard to predict which potentate will be most potential on the Po. —Rev. B. Arborgast, presiding Elder in the Georgia Conference, has been elected President of a College in Virginia—the Em ory and Henry, we believe—and has started to that State with the expectation of accept ing the appointment. —Major B. R. Plumly ha3 entered into a contract with the city of Galveston to con struct street railroads in that city. He has been to New Orleans and purchased a por tion of the rolling stock of the Jackson and Baronne Street road, for shipment to Gal veston. —A wonderful cave has been discovered in Shelby county, Missouri, ten miles from Rolla. It contains immense deposits ofeirth, strongly impregnated with saltpetre. The various halls and passages display splendid clusters of stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations. —Several boxes of clothing arrived from Baltimore for the destitute at Augusta, Ga., and the surrounding country. These contri butions were solicited trout the people of Baltimore by Samuel J. Fields, of that city, to whom the widows’ and orphans’ thanks are due. _ —A private letter from Paris, of a late date, says: '"It is rumored that the Emperor of France has offered Mr. Maury a good situation, and that it is probable he will cot return to Mexico. General Beauregard has been received* by the Emperor id princely style. He haa received honors never con ferred on any stranger before.” —Gens. Sweeny, Spear, and Col. Mahan, the Fenian commanders, who hare been un der arrest for some time at St. Albans, were ieieased on Tuesday on bail furnished by DaDiel P. Barnard, of Brooklyn, N. Y. The bonds for Gens. Sweeny and Spear were fixed at $5,000 each, and those of Col. Mahan at .$3,000. —Under an arrangement -with New York capitalists, the Richmond Examiner was tar nished $4^,000 to run on for twelve months. It now has three months to the end of the period, and fanearfy at the end of its means. The editor has gone to Washington to “raise the wind,” in order to keep the concern alive. —A Canadian correspondent of the New York Tribune aftyathat during the Canadian' excitement, Breckinridge and other Southern refugees offered their services.to the Colonial Government^ ffirsuppfiwff tfiht^TdUng and the rest of the refugees were among the party who offered their services.
