Arizona, near the tsoflf of California, where
nothing grows, nor flies, nor runs. It's the

but in creation, ,aiid Til prove it to you. You
see I was ordered there six year* ago, and
hadn’t been thert two weeks, in the month
of August, when two corporals died. They

A “Load Agemt” Outwitted.—A;» few
days ago an Irishman left Coperopolis' for
San Andreas, or some other “very fine
place,” with his carp* sack upon his back,
and when about five miles on his way was
met by a “road' agent,” who demanded his
money. Pat immedistfcly dropped bis pack
on the ground and sat down oh it, and thus
addressed the man:
“Holy Virgin, yez must be very thick
along this road; I’ve only, come five miles
this morning, and this is the fourth title fve
been stopped and asked far-ra^Nnooay. i’
“Is that so?' asked the highwayman.
“Be me soul it’s the Gospel ttntb,” replied
Pat.
“Well, then, you had better proceed on
your way; it wouldn't pay to go through you
now." , , -X j . ,.
•Pat shouldered his carpet Dag,'and they
were about to separate,- when he lurned
round and said: „
“Have ye iver sich a thing about you as a
match to light my pipe wid?”, .
He was supplied with one, and the two .them, and whose
separated. The Irishinsn bad five hundred
dollars in gold coin in his bundle, and by this
piece of shrewdness saved his money.
