The Daily.News andHerald. SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1866. Oreamttme. Alone, I watch the dying.,day, 1 see it* tints of orange paling; And just beyond the ruffled bay. Gray mists the purple hills are veiling; Upon the roof wierd Angers play, And all the winds are full of wailing. Life’s open book before me lies, And as I turn its leaves back, faintly The pictures of the past arise. Strange forms go by—apparelled quaintly; Sweet voices whisper, and dear eyes Shine as of old—divine and saintly. Odc© more I hear the gentle rhyme Where falling leaves still waters dimple; The woods* low murmur and the chime Of silvery streamlets as they whlmple, And live again the golden time Of childhood’s joys—so pure and simple. What pretty pebbles paved the creek, The dear old creek by mulberries shaded! There the thy frogs played hide-and-seek Through lilies—with sweet spices laded; And our wee shadows seemed to speak From whispering wavelets, as we waded. What leagues of nectar wooed the bees To buckwheat hills or dales of clover! What twittering birds on blooming trees Cooed tenderly, and played the lover ? While Time, with odorous breath of ease, Told the delicious idyl over! We reckoned then each year a gain; Now, they are counted with our losses; Sharp thorns and thistles give us pain, Where then we trod spring’s velvet mosses ; Then, of our flowery garlands vain. And now, aweary with our crosses. 1 gathered wild flowers yesterday, But somehow flowers have lost their sweetness; Some quail were startled—even they Seem to have lost their old discreetness. And only hopped beside the way, As if they had no need for fleetness. But when 1 see the children meet, Flower-laden, from their plays returning; Care trampled by their heedless feet. Their trustful souls all shadow spurning; Their hearts wild with impatient beat, And hope’s bright fires within them burning; I know life blooms the same, but I Shall breathe its old-time fragrance—never! The dreary now—the dear gone by, The bridgeless floods of sorrow sever, Ah, me! how wistfully I sigh * I lost f Legal -Notices. A Successful Cotton-Picker Invented by a Yankee in Memphis. On tlie invitation of Mr. John G. Page, tbe inventor, we called on Saturday to look at his cotton-picker. It is about ten feet long, and gradually rises in height from rear to front. Within are five cylinders with wooden teeth, differing in length in the different cyl inders, which work in and with each other from rear to front. Tbe teeth are an inch in diameter. Underneath arc five arches of sheet iron, adapted to the circumference de scribed by tbe ends of tbe teeth. In these sheet iron arches are holes a half an inch in diameter, for the escape of all loose seed, dirt and oilier bits of refuse matter. Tbe cotton bolls are gathered from the field, those with the staple dropping out and those just opening, thereby getting two pick ings at once, and much more rapidly than be fore- The bolls thus gathered are brought lo the machine and placed in tbe hopper, which is really but a receiver placed over tbe rear part of the picker. From the receiver it is led into the machine from above, at the rear end. The teeth in the rear Cylinder take it down underneath, and on raising it, it is struck by tbe teeth of the next cylinder, and carried on in a similar manner, till it is thrown out at the front. The last teeth move with twice the velocity of those in the first cylin der, and throw the cotton out about six feet In passing through tbe machine, the basks ana sticks are broken to pieces, and they with the dirt are being continually beaten out and dropped through the holes In tbe sheet iron at the bottom. Tbe cotton, with the seed in each pod of the boll, is gradually beat apart from the others, without breaking tbe Staple, and comes out thns separated. Mr. PagereckonB that one man with a picker can accomplish as much as four to six with out it. This saving of labor, together with the improvement in tbe condition and value of the staple, will render the picker a great blessing to tbe South. One picker will work cotton fast enough for three or four gins, and save at least one- third of the motive power otherwise required to run one.—Memphis Post. i A I W Notice. ^ LL PERSONS having claims ag-inst the estate Ann Moral will present them, duly attest within the time prescribed by law ; and all indebt to saiOSestate will make payment to 4y7-law6w A.
