About Woven o’clock on Thursday night, is Polics- man Dougherty was walking through htt ward, he saw two negroes standing near the lane door at the store of Alexander Hardee, southeast comer of Bar- — gtennislitps and Steamers nard and Jefferson streets. Policeman Dougherty ap- v proached them and asked what they were doing there, when one of the negroes said, “stand back, you d—d- son of a b—h," and at the same time fired a shot st him, the ball striking Mr. Dougherty in the left bend, causing a painful, though not s Berious wound' After firing the shot the negroes immediately ran,and were fired at and charged by the policeman, but they managed to make their escape. A short time after the occurrence, a negro was arrested in a house in the same lane, about fifty yards from West Bided street, who had been shot in the ankle. On being taken to the police barracks, several witnesses who went with him stated that he had come home from church but e short before the arrest, and was shot in the ankle by some unknown person while sitting out on hia steps. The negro was therefore discharged from custody, there being no proof that he was one of the negroes who fired st the policeman. BThe Cholera.—Owing to the non-arrival of any boat from the Quarantine up to a late hour laat night, we are without any official report. We learn, how ever, that the cholera is daily oh the decrease, and no new cases have been reported for the past few days. Serious Accident.—On Thursday night last a white woman, while in a state of intoxication, jumped form the stone wall at the east end of the Bay to the ground below, a distance of over twety-flve feet, which is paved with cobble stones, breaking both her legs. Not only In this country, bat In all other lands to Which commerce bears onr flag, the peculiar merits of the article are known and appreciated. It lias been found salted to all climates, all localities, and the needs of every class of society. Componnded of the purest vegetable ingredionts, unalloyed %lth any mineral salt or corrosive vegetable alkaloid, and com bining the properties of a WHOLESOME STO- MACHIC, a GENTLE LAXATIVE, and an efficient ANTI-BILIOUS AGENT, it la 'endorsed ‘by practica Chemists as the safest, and by unprejudiced physi cians as the surest Preventative, Regolatiug and Restorative Preparation of tile age. The nature of its components is the guarantee of Its harmlessness. It consists of the stimulating prin ciple of sound Rye, medicated with the finest tonic, antl-febrlle, aperient, antiscorbutic, and anti-spas modic herbs, roots and barks that botanical research has yet developed tor the use of man. Every vegeta ble substance that enters into its composition is culled and selected with scrupulous care, and no; thing that is not sound and perfect of It, kind is used in its manufacture. In the factory at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a sys tem of Inspection far more thorough than that adopted by Government authority, as a test of the qaality-of the great staples or life, Is rigorously prac Used. Every barrel of the cereal stimulant which forms the basis of the Bitters is ascertained to be ab solutely pure before it is received into the manufac- taring department,, and every leaf and fibre of the medicating ingredients scrutinized before the proees of infusion commences. Sncli is the enormous ca paclty of the tanks in which the Bitters are prepared that the proprietors are enabled to keep a large stock on hand, and to snppiy the doigestlc ami foreign market with an article matured ami mellowed by time. Hence the fiery and biting flavor which at tacbea to ordinary bitters, and which U due to tlieir newness and the lnlerlor quality of the drugs and alcohol of which they are concocted, is never per ceived in this mild and agreeable preparation'. Ac cording to the testimony of able chemists, the es sence of good Rye is the most healthful of all spirits, anil Hostetler’s AUCTION NOTICE. BT BELL, WTLLY CHRISTI AM. STOMACH BITTEFIS Are the only Medicinal Tonic In the World of which that fluid is the stimulating Ingredient. To Dyspeptic Sufferers. Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed aU the varieties of Indigestion. Its-symptoms are so various, and differ so much iu different individuals that it is almost impossible to classify them. In fact, some of them are utterly indescribable. It may be’ safely asserted, however, that half the diseases of mankind spring from a disordered condition of the stomach; and that the other half, whatever their origin, react upon that sensitive and Important or gan. Among the ordinary Indications of Dyspepsia are flatulence, a bloated and lull feeling about the stomach and abdomen immediately after eating, a gnawing sensation or a sen.e of hollowness at the pit of the stomach between meals, a heavy dull feel ing in the head, feebl* or unsteady appetite, occa sional nansea, restlessness daring night and a weary, nnrefreshed feeling on rising in the morning, palpita tion of the heart, depression of mind, sometimes amounting to monomania, loss of memory, confu sion of thought, sour stomach, with raising or food, and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness of eye, pain in the diaphragm, feebleness and disincli nation for exertion, and sometimes emaciation and a corpse-like pallor. These are a few of the direct signs of Dyspepsia, but as it is generally complicated with specific affections of the bowels, the liver aqil the letves, Its victims have many additional torments which are technically attributed to other canses. The best advice that can be given to any one who has the slightest predisposition to Dyspepsia, is to for tify his or her digestive organs by the dally use of Hostetter’s Bitters. The disease proceeds from a lack of vigor iu the stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tone and renovate that organ. If the gastric apparatus is in good working order, and can perfectly dissolve andtborenghly assimilate the food submitted to its operation, there wllf'be no Dyspepsia. If it cannot do this, it requires reinforcement, and the best of all reinforcing agent9 should be forthwith resorted to. The stomach is the commissariat'of the system supplies the elements of life to the whole body. It is prepared the material of blood, muscle, bone and fibre, and If it falls to purvey that material in quantity, and of a proper kind, the whole body suf fers, an&plth it the mental faculties. Therefore pro tect the cothmissariat department. Don’t let the en emy obtain possession of it. It is eas'er to prevent disease from getting into an organ than to expel it after it becomes a chronic fixture. Consider the first Indication of nneasiness In the stomach as a sign that Dyspepsia Is preparing to attack, and baffle it at once with the GREAT REPELLANT. But if it la too late to prevent, remember that it is not too late to cure. It is believed that there is no case or Chronic Indigestion that can withstand the remedial operation of j Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. This belief Is grounded on twelveyeats’ experience of the efficacy of the preparation. The first instance of Its failure to give relief is yet uncbroniclcd. If It ever had failed, tbe voluminous correspondence ad- dressed to the proprietors from all parts of tbe United States and South America, would at least include one letter expressing dissatisfaction. But no, there is not one. The testimony, extending over a period of more than a dozen years, is all of the approving tenor. Certainly this is a sufficient warrant for claiming that the BITTERS are a SPECIFIC FOR INDIGESTION IN ALL ITS VARIETIES. Hostetter’s Bitters Health and Sea Breeze. BY BF LiL, WYLLY A.JCHRI9TIAN. H is a great fallacy to suppose that the nauseons- ness of a medicine is any probf of its value as a res- togttive. The, truth is, that if the palate revolts against a remedy. It cannot do much good. HOSTETTER’S BITTERS Are not unpleasant to the taste, and always soothe and quiet, instead of irritating the stomach. Indeed they are the best known prevenUtive of and rare for nansea. Their usefulness as a family specific can scarcely be overrated. For sickness at the stomach, sudden spasms, wind colic, hysterica, nervous head, ache, lassitude, low spirits, aud the thousand amf oiie little ailments that are continually occurring in every family, there is nothing comparable to them. T he attention of cotton planters is Invited to the claims of this invention, which, in SIMPLICITY, ECONOMY, DURABILITY and POW ER, surpasses any machine for Baling Co’ton ever before presented to the country. Its great excel lence In these respects makes it THE BEST MACHINE FOR PACKING COTTON IN THE WORLD! 1. ITS SIMPLICITY.—It is a new and improved application of the Screw Power; just as simple In its cousiruction as the old fashioned wooden screw, as easilv managed, and no more liable to get ont of or der. " No ropes or pnllies as used In the cotton presses. 2. ITS ECONOMY.—It has been demonstrated by aotnal experiment to be cheaper than tho wooden screw. The timbers used in its construction arc much smaller and fewer than those emplqyed In the old screw; the levers being only 16 feet long, and the height of the whole frame above the bed being only 10 foot. All these timbers can be procured on the plantation, no matter how exhausted the forest. Any ordinary wood workman can build'the frame, and half a dozen bends will put it np in a few boars. 3. ITS DURABILITY.—The Screw and Nut are or iron, aud will last for years without any appreciable wear. The whole machine occupies so little space that it can be completely covered at very small cost. 4. ITS POWER.—With a lever only sixteen feet long, one mule is snffleient for packing tbe heaviest bales. Planters who have used it say that, with two males, cotton may be compressed on this machine for shipment. This Screw was invented just before the opening of the war, and has subsequently never been very gen erally introduced. Those who have used It and seen it used, unanimously concur In the opinion’ that it la UNRIVALLED AS A COTTON SCREW. The following testimonials from some of the beat and most reputable planters In the country show the estimate in which this Screw stands with those who have tried it: We have used and teen in operation for the li five years, Wright’s Improved Cotton Iron Screw,- and feel no hesitati, n in pronouncing It the very best Cotton Screw we have ever known. So highly do we esteem it, that, if practicable to obtain one of them, we would have no other. It is easily bn It, simple in its construction, not liable to get ont of order, packs well, with great power and with great facility. Edward T. Shepherd. G. Y. Banks. Elcanah Pace. W. H. Mitchell. Columbus, Ga., July 1, 1866. AU orders for the Screw will be filled by LINVILLE A GLEASON, Savannah, Ga , or L. D. PALMER, General Agent for Southern Georgia and S. Carolina. jy30-diw2m Caution.
