unsatisfactory; but of late nearly or quite all
of the calculations that we have seen have
reduced the former estimates several hundred
thousand bales. The most accurate and re
liable conjectures upon this subject by South
ern men place the crop_at ! frpm 1,500,000 to
2,000,000. The best ^posted men North and
South had gCnefaily settled.j&wn upon these
figures, until the recent appearance of a letter
m the New York Times from Mr. Truman,
who has traveled through the South a godil
deal since the war, in which an estimate is
given which goes a long way over all preced
ing estimates. As the result, Mr. Truman
says, of close observation and inquiry he fixes
the aggregate number of bales at from
2,500.000 to 3 000,000. We hope his predic
tions will be realized, but we fear his figures
. are considerably too high: |
Only a short time sinoe it was announced, on
authority oflnformalibn from Southern mer
chants, and confirmed by assurances of cor
rectness from the New York dry goods trade,
that the crop would yield only from 300,000
to 1,100,(^00 bales. But it is now attempted
to be shown by the organ of the dry goods
irade of New Y’ork that the crops will reaefi
4.000,000 bales, which is considerably above
Mr. Truman’s estimate. This estimate, says
a cotemponuy, has been [pdt forth with the
view of depressing the market as much
as possible, in order that buyers may avail
themselves of the opportunity thus created
of making purchases of the new crop at low
figures. This supposition is strengthened by
the statement going the rounds that cotton
agents have contracted for the delivery of
crops at Southern ports at tweuty-five cents,
currency, and that they have contracted wifli
planters in Georgia and Alabama for the pro -
duct of their fields at eighteen cents. The
object cf Ibis is too apparent to deceive the
most simple-minded. It is in this way that
Northern speculators hope to create the im
pression that there will be a very large crop,
and then step into the market and purchase
all that can be had at a stipnlated price. It
is to this end that they have their agents
scattered throughout the country, ready to
consummate the scheme when the signal is
given by the managers in New Y’ork aud
elsewhere. Our planters will hardly be
caught by any tricks of this sort. The}- will
have the sagacity not to sell their cotton un
til they have gathered it, aud ascertained
with a degree ol certainty what the crop will
yield. We will venture the assertion that
cotton will not fell below present prices, even
though the crops should reach the maximum
estimate, which is an impossibility.

the great body of the Northern people, when
the war came - to* otope. wanted a constitu
tional amendment abolishing slavery and
representation according to qualified voters-
They alto felt that the National Government
was pledged to see that the negro, while the
South was in a transition state, should be
protected in life, person, and estate; and,
having obtained these, they wanted all the.
States restored at the earliest possible mo
ment to {heir lull political relations to the
Nstioosl-tjovernment.
TheUea of forcing universal suffrage upon
the Southern States, or of demanding sociul
equality between the whites and blacks, or
of reducing the States lately in rebellion to
the condition of Territories, or of carrying a
plan of general confiscation, never has. been
harbored by any considerable or reputable
number here having the slightest influence
upon the course of public opinion.
Without wishing or intending to treat ot
political issues, present or prospective, we
feel it our Christian duty to express the hope
that at this time the South will not fall into
the dreadful mistake of trying, by the aid of
of what is here regarded as a bogus Demo-'
cracy, to build up a party in favor of ultra,
sectional, pro-southern views. The interest
of the Southern people is to make common
cause with the so-styled Conservatives of the
Uoiou organization;, and with those who can
properly affiliate with them.
When this shall have been done, parties
will divide on policy or principle, and not on
geographical lines. The quicker this is done
the better will it be for all sections and for
all interests.
The above is from the Christian Intelligen
cer, which we have always regarded as one
of the ablest, fairest, most influential and
most conservative religious papeis at the
North. It is edited by Elbert S. Porter, D.
D., a prominent clergyman of Brooklyn, re
nowned for his eloqnence in the pulpit, aud
his ability as a writer. We thank him for
bis compliment to the News and Herald,
which is the more valuable for coming from
so distinguished a sohree, but we suggest
that a visit to the South, and intercourse
with its prominent divines and Jeading peo
ple, would demonstrate the error ot many of
the premises on which he argues above- The
News and, Herald always has maintained,
wliat Southern people well know, that their
best frieuds at the North are those who
fought most resolutely for the Union, and
those who staid at home, Sumner, Stevens,
et id omnes, who never fought, but are now
trying to undo the results of the war tor the
Union, are their worst enemies. There is no
people on the face of the globe more thor
oughly disgusted with partisan politics, and
more anxious to obtain and preserve by any
honorable means, and only such, their full
stains as citizens-i>f their united nation, than
the influential, controlling people of the South,
so far as extended investigations have enabled
us to judge. All they ask is what was pro

‘THE IiOST CAUSE”—A CHANCE ffOH
EX-CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS.
. Nxrw Yosi. July 2,1866.
In the early hours of toe algbk of the 30th of June,
I wrote tbs leet word ea lhs lest sheet M “l’R* Loo*
Cause,’* my long iwfliiiiitffil hiMory of the lete war.
I have mccdtupliahed my task.' Within twelve teoathn
I have written more than three thousand pages of
manuscript, ersmiaed an average of at least two hun
dred references ia diffMaat portion* of the aenmttvn,
iqJ analyzed And Aonotiied AOine ’ four or five bun’
dred letters from CoilfWerste General* and politicians
I believe I have composed a wote Shat wRl tive end.be

Rat wtate I proceed to esy Lsincerelydeelsec moot

aclf or my work. The hook ’WUl be oaf 1n*a few
weeks; it is sold oaly by eabii rriplioaa jebteiaed by
egeats, Who, it is designed, shall cover every , square
mile of the Union. It bos occurred to me, knowing
bow many people (here are in the South nesgy. dis
tressed anfidcairoee nfemutoymeid nspecUly among
aoldiere of the lei* Confederacy—to make known to
ttaaa a chance for employment, viz: canvassing for
“Tax Lost Caos*.’* I know that many of the people
of the South have no (kith In Northern advertisements
of “agencies peyiag immensely. ” Rut they will be-
Uva me when 1 declare that such has been the euocom
of subscriptions to '*Tni Lost Cause," that many of
the agents are making from twenty to forty dollars a
day. I have been greatly surprised at the profits of
thehuMnees, and I have determined to designate it to
many of my country man in need a* an opportunity
for Drofi table emDlovmeut.
These agencies are bestowed exclusively by my
publisher*. But I have requested them to djatribu-
tiag agencies to the Southern Sites* to prefer as far as
passible those who bore arm* ft* the Confederacy,
end those who bar* a part in those gloris* which ‘.The
Lost Cause” seeks to commemorate. All correspon
dence about agencies asset be addressed eaefauiVtey to
my publisher*, thus: B. Trent A Co* No. 654
