now4s to wake op the property of the North
to the dangers which threaten it. -qq
it vigorous efforts will hf made
to (tarty New York and Pennsylvania in Ihe
next elections. Those States are considered
•s the battle ground of the future.
The conciliatory tone of the returks of
Lord Derby in reference to tbe po&its of
difference between Great Britain and the
United States, has been received hare' with
i great sfitisfadlioa. Mr. Sewardii very bope-
ful ot getting up a joint commission to in
vestigate the claims of the Uaited States
growing out of the druise of the Alabama
and other Confederate privateers.
The cholera is making stegtjy. advances in,
New York and Philadelphia, btitijeople
don’t seem to be near as uheaSy nowag'they,
were some lime ago. It is curious how
readily mankind adopt themselves to any
thing.
Tbe Radicals are carrying ex-Proviaional
Governor Hamilton ail over the country to
make speeches. He appears in the doable
character of orator and witness. He proves
his facts, and of conse they conform to his
theories. Beyond doubt, he will do immense
damage, because be is from the Booth, with
tb£ endorsement of tbe President’s appoint
ment,'and be is informed -'upon the fiubject
which he speaks about. It was very incon
siderate in the President'to appoint jk man of
Hamilton's political views to carry out his
policy. When we remember this' appoint
ment and that of Carl Schurz, it ,wou|4 seem
the President mnst have been floating about
vaguely, without any definite purpose.
The President’s friends are surprised at the
.exception taken .by some of the Southern
papers to the call for the PbSadeipitia Con
vention. They say the oltject to be attained
is to break down the power of the Radicals.
To do this it is necessary to accommodate
platforms to the public sentiment of the
North. Unless this CM be done, than it is
•aid to be useless to go into the straggle.
Unless this straggle can he successfully
carried through, the South is at Abe . mercy
or the Radicals. That means volumes of
horrors- ^
