The Daily News and Herald. SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST IS, 1866. THE DESERTED HOMESTEAD. tie garde! Swing, creaking in the idle wind; And weed, choke np the graveled walk. That erat with pink, and box were lined; And foietlea flonriah everywhere, And briar, thrive where rose, blew; > And opiate poppies make the air Smd drowsy when the HIBes grew. The porch, where loving hands had trained The prairie bush, whose blossoms red Freighted the air with pleasant scents, Is fallen, and the buh is dead; Wide yawn the window, and the doom, The chimney totters on the roof, And mow mid ivy deftly now Weave over nil a war p and woof. Untouched the frnttfal trees decay; Uncared for dies the climbing vine— No hand to pluck the mellow fruit, No hand to prow the purple wine. And where the household inmates came To quaff the water clear and cool. Naught now remains of bubbling springe l brackish] ' Save slimy stones mid 1 i pool. Here undisturbed the swallows come. And robins with their ruddy breasts; And here the droning wasp and bee With cunning skill contrive their neats. Ue spider trails its fragile web Athwart the heavy oaken beams; And constantly the death watch ticks Within the wainscot's dusty Nome... And those whose voices echoed here, Whose feet had pressed the garden walk— Who shall of their long absence tell ? Or who their wanderings can mark ? > Their voices may be hushed for aye. And feet that respite never knew From weary walks in life’s long day. Hay have the gates of Heaven passed through! In General. Medical. The number just at the close of the war was twice as large, but with in a few months many have been dischaged. There are thousands of applications for places on file at the various departments, though the situations, taking all thinga'iiito considera tion, are by no means desirable. — General Robert E. Sack is the enormous ca parity of the tanks In which the Bitten are prepared that the proprietors are enabled to keep a large stock on baud, and to supply the domestic and foreign macMt with an article matured and mellowed by time. Hence the fiery and- biting fiavor which at- laches to ordinary bitten, and which is due to their newness and the Inferior quality of the drugs and alcohol of which they are ooaoocted, is never per ceived in this mild and agreeable preparation. Ac lording to the testimony of able chemists, the es sence or good Rye Is the moel healthful of all spirits, aDd Hostetter’s STOMACH BITTERS Are the only Medicinal Tonic in the World of which that fluid is the stlmolatfog ingredient. To Dyspeptic Sufferers. Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed all the varieties of Indigestion. Its symptoms are so various, and differ so much In different individuals that it is almost impossible to dasriiy them. In fact, some of them are utterly Indescribable. It may he safely asserted, however, that half the diseases of mankind spring from 4. disordered condition of the stomach; and that the other half, whatever their origin, react upon that sensitive and Important or gan. Among the ordinary indications of Dyspepsia are flatulence, a bloated and fnll feeling about the stomach and abdomen Immediately after eating, a gnawing sensation or a sente or hollowness at the pit of the stomach between meals, a heavy doll feel ing in the head, feeble or analeady appetite, occa sional nausea, restlessness daring flight and a weary, nurefresbed feeling on risingtn the morning, palpita tion of the heart, depression of mind, sometimes amounting to [aanuaaaaU, leas of memory, confu sion or thought, sour stomach, with raising of food, and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness of eye, pain in the diaphragm, feebleness and disincli nation for exertion, aad sometimes emaciation and a corpse-like pallor. These are a few of the direct signs of Dyspepsia, bat as it is generaily complicated with specific affections of the bowels, the liver aad the Leives, its victims have many additional torments which are technically attributed to other canses. Thff best advice that can be given to any one who has tbo slightest predisposition to Dyspepsia, ta to for tify his or her digestive organs by the daily use of Hostetter’s Bitters. The disease proceeds from a lack of vigor In the stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tone and renovate that organ. If the gastric apparatus is in good working order, and can perfectly dissolve and thoronghly assimilate the food submitted to its operation, there will be no Dyspepsia. If It caflflot do this, it requires reinforcement, and the best of all reinforcing agents shoald be forthwith resorted to. The stomach is the commfeeaitet of the system. It supplies the element, of life Id the whole body. Id It Is prepared the material pf blood, mhsCle, bone and fibre, and if it foils to purvey that material in quantity, and of a proper kind, tbe whole body suf fers, and with it the mental faculties. Therefore pro tect the commissariat department. Don't let the en emy obtain possession of it. It is easier to prevent disease from getting into an organ than to expel it after it becomes a chronic fixture. Consi-ler the first Indication of unsasiness in ths stomach as a sign that Dyspepsia Is preparing to Attack, and baffle It at onoe with the GREAT RBPSLLANT. Bat ir It is too late to prevent, remember that It Is not too late to cure. It is believed that there In no case of Chronic Indigestion that can withstand the remedial operation of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. This belief is grounded cu twelve years’ experience of the efficacy of the preparation. Tbe tret instance of Its failure to give relief la yet onchronlcled. Iftt ever had foiled, the volawtoooa correspondence ad- dressed to the proprtetore from all parts of tbe United States and South America, would at least include one letter exprearing dtesattshrilnn Bat no, there is not one. The testimony, extending over a period of more than a dozen year*, to nil of the airproving tenor.
