In Oeneral. —Cholera is on the increase in Cincinnati, New Orleans, Savannah and St. Louis, though it is said to be abating in the city of New York. On the 9th instant, forty-nine people died of it in Cincinnati; on the 8th, eighteen died of the same plague in New Or* leans. —Another evidenee of the sincerity of President Johnson in his efforts to recon struct the Union and restore fraternal feel ing, has been given by him in restoring to ex-Oovemor H. A. Wise his property, which had been confiscated by the Government. —The Lynchburg Virginian says that Hon. A. H. Stephens and General John B. Gordon were to pass through Lynchburg on Satur day en route for the Johnson Philadelphia Convention. —Two sisters lately met in Baltimore after forty-eight yeara separation. They talked thirty-six hours, and were still talking when last heard from. —Mrs. Odell, of New York, lately armed herself with a revolver, and started in quest of her husband's paramour. She would have killed the wrong woman, bat that her pistol was not capped. —As one of the results of the war, it may be stated that there are at the present time m the United States no less than twenty-five manufactories of artificial legs. — Jenny Land, who was formerly the idoj of the public; Jenny Lind, who for years gathered flowers and bank notes an her w^y, may be said to have assisted it her own funeral, as an artist, in having unfortunately again come before the public long after her voice was no more. She was hissed by a great part of the audience. So says a Paris letter. — The police of Peris recently found the bodies of throe young girls who had com mitted suicide by smothering themselves to death with charcoal. They were fonnd in a kneeling posture, attired in their best dresses. — Hob. Heniy 8. Foote, in replying to Gen. Hindman’s recent letter, says in refer ence to bis co-operatien with the South: “J now regard this action on my part as (he moat grievous political blunder of my whole public life.” Alas! what a blunder. —A large.number of persons were injured in Detroit, Michigan, by the tall oi the iron roof of the new Michigan Central freight house. Most of them were employed constructing the building. About thirty men were employed in and around the building,- and a dozen of them'were buried in the ruins. Several were injured very severely, and it is wonderful that none were killed. — Dr. Randolph, who has been ia Wash ington for some time past advocating the claims of the Louisiana colored schools, who waa snubbed by Snmner, and to whom the President granted a confidential interview of two hours, has met with substantial pecu niary success. The President has made a donation of $1,000, and Gen. Grant of $200, in aid ot the object sought, and $12,50C have been raised from the general public in a sin gle day. — An Indiana paper “dares” anybody “to beat” the Radical nominations for Congress in that State. Four of the candidates are Major Generals. Nobody ever heard of any of them except Wasbburne, who lives in history by reason of the Confederates having captured his trousers at Memphis. The two civilians are CoMkx and Julian. —A woman la MohmoN recently under took to cure her husband of intemperance by filling bis whisky bottle with kerosene. He took a dose which made him cavort round the room like an Indian at a war dance. He begged for relief, forgave the deception, promised to abstain from liquor forevermore, and—harried out to. get a little “real old stuff to take thW AMnad Mats out of bis month.” —Alter one of the late battles, as a sur geon of the Austrian army was going his rounds examining the patients, he came to a tiraMasr who had been hit wrfth a bulletin the left breast, right over the region of the heart. The sungeon, surprised at Uw narrow eseape of the man, exclaimed; “Why, my brave fel low, when in the name of goodness canid your heart have been ?” “I guess it must have been in my month, Jus? then," replied the soldier, with a faint and sickly smile. —The Rev. Dr. "WsHter, a veiy able, a very worthy, and highly respected orthodox divine of the city of Portland, preached the Sunday after the calamity In reference there to.
