The Daily News and Herald* wwnWK8DAT. APQUBT 92. 1866. What U a. Year'S what U a year ? TL« but a war# On 11/e'(dark rolling aiream. Which la ao quickly gone that we It but a dream. Account It l 'XIa but a single earnest throb Of Time'a old iron heart. Which tiieleaa is, and strong aa when It first with life did start. What ia a year? 'Tie but a turn Of Time’a old brazen wheel, Or but a page upon the book WhUh Death must shortly seal. ’Tie but a atm upon the road Which we must travel o’er; A few more etepa and we shall walk Life's weary rounds no more. The Needle-Gam. "The needle-gun 1 Ho, bo !" quoth he, (Twas his grandStatanic Majesty,) •That has been my tool for many a year 1 And he gave a grin and he gavealeer ; “A fine invention, too, for me,” Quoth his mighty, sable Majesty. "Go up on earth and count my graves— Go, see my worn and wasted slaves. I have no weapon in all my store That has ever worked ao well before. My fight is slow, but sure, you see," Quoth his grim, sardonic Majesty. “Ton maiden, weary eyed and pale, She is mine although my aim should fail. When Hunger opes the door to Tice, Well I know the sum of Virtue’s price 1 Do I fail to tempt ? Not 11 ” quoth he— Quoth his chuckling, truckling Majesty. "A close-pent room is my battle-field, Mid reeking filth my victims yield, In sweltering beat and starving cold— But the story, you know is very old. To the needle-gun !” in merry glee. WM. BURNS. I Kvecutors Jy2-law2m ROBERT MCINTYRE, f r -xeiufo —Henry Ward Beecher reports an income for last year of nine thousand dollars. —A short time since a meteor passed over San Antonio, Texas, which was so brillfant as to illuminate the entire city. — The Countess Romero, of Havana, was at a Saratoga ball recently, with fifty thou sand dollars worth of diamonds. —It is reported out West inat the town of Monroe, Ohio, has been blown away by a hurricane. Anybody finding such a town will please return it to its former position, and no questions asked. The planting of cotton is thus for a suc cess. Accounts from that State say that the crops are promising. One planter has two hundred acres of cotton under cultivation. —An exchange says a peddler was lately pitched into a well in Arkansas by an in censed husband. After nightfall the in censed husband’s wife fished him out and’ eloped with him. — The OraDd Jury of New Orleans have made their report of the testimony on the late rioja. It bears no new features, and is in every way similar to tbe joint report of Herron, Voorhees and Monroe, to the Presi dent, already telegraphed. — The Meadvilie (Miss.) Journal records tbe death of Mr. Frederick Craider in that county, in his one hundred and eighth year. He had been a soldier both in the Revolu tionary war and in that of 1812, and enjoyed health and vigor to a remarkable degree, up to tbe time of his death. —In the throat of a cow which died one day this week in the eastern part of Maine was found a piece of a hoop skirt, which led to the supposition that she had swallowed the milk-maid. The matter has, after due investigation, been settled—the maid had suddenly disappeared, bnt returned a blush ing bride. TKn P»»—«1ah? TTninniAto Kolj * grept meeting at Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday. Gen. Cooper, a collector of internal revenue, made a speech against the President; Repre sentative Maynard denounced the contrivers of the Philadelphia Convention as traitors, and warned the rebels of the South, that, after another war, all the federal officers re quired in the South would be a surveyor- general and some land officers. — Tbe Prussian semi-official orgaD, the Zatvng, says that Napoleon’s absurd demand has raised hopes in France which it is im possible for Germany to fulfill. Tbe ideas ot the revolution which has taken place iu Germany, are of a national Germany, and not ot an international character, and convey no menace or danger to France. — An exchange says that when a piece of iron is thrown into a trough where chickens drink water they are not effected with chicken cholera. A gentleman who has tried it, says that his chickens are thriving, while those of bis neighbors are dying daily. As tbe chicken cholera is raging to some extent throughout the country, it might be well to try it. Iron will not hurt fowls, and a trial of it might be beneficial. r VO MONTHS after date tpplicvtlrti will be nmde to the Coart of Ordinary of Balloch county lor leave to sell all the tends befogging to the latiutf ot Thomas C.
