well played, both parties mskiug several fine ahota,
Mr. Ford winning by fifty-nine points, in the game of
two hundred.
Mr. Ford, the winner, was then challenged by Mr.
Win. Rice, and during the game both gentlemen made
some excellent caroms. This game was warmly con
tested, Mr. Ford evidently unwilling to relinquish his
claim, and Mr. Rice as intent upon winuing, which he
did by sixteen points. ■ .. . i ’ I
The winner was then challenged by two other gentle
men, Mr. Coolcdge and Mr. J. M. Berrien; but hot
wishing to play with both, it was urged that Mr. Cool-
edge aud Mr. Berrien should play together, when Mr.
Rico would play the winner for the championship.
This being satisfactory, the contestants entered

The Fall Trade.
The period is near at hand when the fall iradp will
commence and infuse new life and activity among the
business classes of the community. Tho evidences of
a busy season are already apparent, from the largo
amount of merchandize arriving at our port for the
city trade aud the interior. As an indication that tho
business will open even earlier than it did last year
we may cite the rapidity with which the coastwise
steamers are having their usual repairs made, many
of which are already completed, and are only awaiting
the lapse of a few more days to resume their places
id the channels of commerce.
There are now, notwithstanding the usual dullness
of the present month, three steamers plying between
this city aud New York, besides one to each of the
citie3 of Beaton, Philadelphia and Baltimore, and the
number will soon be increased on all o{ tho lines
named. W; >
There are some hall a dozen steamers lying at the
Eastern wharves, undergoing repairs, and a like nunr
her at the ship yard on the opposifiarinde of the river.
In addition there are several boats now North under
going repairs, and may be looked for at ul early day.
•"We noticed in yesterday’s issue thf^mSodeling of
the steamer Charles S. Hardee, so aa to ada^t her to
the Ocmtxlgee river trade, which it is a^paeted will
be a brisk one. We also notice that her consort, Uie
Two Boys, is having dud attention paid to her, in the
way of narrowing her guards, which heretofore
too great width aft for speedy navigation. ' .
We have also noticed that the small coasting end
are having their rigging, &c. ( overhauled, and the’Tea
sels generally placed in good condition, preparatory
to making an early start for the coast cotton and rice.
Schooner Glemroy.
We learn from Captain Murray, of the BehogMar
Glenroy, reported in yesterday’s issue as having ar
rived below in distress, the following particulars in
regard to the disaster: The Glenroy was bound from
New York to Savannah, and waa seventeen days
making the passage; on the 23d, off Charlestdh, in a
heavy sea, had foremast and main tcgOMat carried
away, and mainmast and bowsprit sprang, also had
bulwarks and deck stove in, besides having small boat
9tove. Captain Murray also reports lost overboard
part of deck load, and the cargo in the lower hold
damaged. The vessel, in fact, is entirely dismantled.
After the disaster jury sails were rigged, and provi
dentially, the wind blowing fair, the ship was steered
to this, her port of destination.

arrived at an early honr yesterday morning. / The
continual increase of trade between Baltimore and this

we learn that arrangements are now being made
for the re-esiablishmeut of the new line, started some
time since, of which the Cumberland comprised one of
the vessels.

LT It makes Tour different stitches, the lock, knot,
double lock, kml double knot, on one and Ui* same
machine. Each stitch being alike on both sides of
the fabric.
AS~ Every Machine has the reversible feed mol ion,
which enables the operator, by simply turning a
thumb screw, to have the work run either to the
right or left, to stay any part of the seam, or fasten
the ends of seams, without turning the fabric.
r- The only Mach ne having a self-adjueting

in exact proportion to the size of the bobbin.

tw It does not require finer thread on the under

No other Machine will do so great * range of
work as the Florence.

The taking up of the slack thread is not performed
by the irrcgnlor contraction of a«i r e coil oruncer

curacy with which the Florence draws the thread
into the cloth is unapproached in any SewiDg Ma

We famish each Machine with “Barnnm’s Sclt-

Patent Improved
IRON SCREW !J
FOR
' BE
IPacking Cotton.
T HE ATTENTION OF COTTON PLANTERS IS
iuvited to the claims of this invention, which, iu
SIMPLICITY, ECONOMY, DURABILITY and POW
ER, aaipasacs any machine for Baling Cotton ever
before presented to the country. Its great excel
lence to these respects makes it
THE BEST MACHINE
FOK PACKING COTTON
IN TJ4E WORLD ! 4
1. ITS SIMPLICITY—It is a new, and improved
application of the Screw Power; just as simple in its
construction as the old lhshioned wodden screw, as
easily managed, and uo more liable t i get out of or
der. No ropes or ptillies as used in the cotton
presses. . • . . > t
2. ITS ECONOMY.—It has been demonstrated by
actual experiment to he cheaper than the wooden
sdrew. The timbers used in its construction arc
much smaller and fewer than those employed in the
old screw; the levers being only 16 feet long, and the
height of tlie whole frame above tlie bed being only
10 feat. All these timbers can he procured on the
plantation, no matter how exhausted the forest. Any
ordinary wood workman can build (he frame, and
hill a dozen hands will put it up m a few hours.
3. ITS DUP.ABILITY.—The Screw and Nut are of
iron, and will last (or years without any appreciable
wear. Tne whole machine occupies so little space
that It ran he completely covered at very email cost.
4. ITS PoWMB.—With a torcr o-ny sixteen ieet
long, one male is sufflcityinor packing the heaviest
bales. Planters who have need it say that, with t wo
mules, cotton may be compressed on this machine
for shipment.
■this Screw was invented just before the opening of
the war, aud has subsequently never been very gen
erally introduced. Those who have used it an'tsceu
it used, utmuimously concur in the opinion that it is
UNRIVALLED AH A COTTON SCREW.
The following testimonials from some of the beat
and most reputable planter? In the country show the
estimate la which this Screw stands witlt those who
have tried It: '
We have used and seen in operation for the last,
five years, Wright’s Improved Cotton iron Screw,
and feel no heattat i * m pronouncing It the very best
Cot ton Screw we have ever, known. So, highly do
we esteem ii, that. If practicable to oBtaht one of
them, we would have uo other. It is easily- bn It,
simple in its construction, not liable fo get out of
order, pucks WeU, with great power and with great
facility. . . _ • ■
