FLORENCE
SEWING MACHINES!!
WE, HAVING been appointed General Agents for
Georgia and Florida, are now prepared to exhibit
every style of the above Machines. See circular
below.
Circular.
We claim for the Vlobince the following advan
tages over any and all SewiDg Machines:
makes four different stitches, the lock, knot,
double lock, and doable knot, on one and tbe same
machine. Each atltcb being alike on both skies or
the fabric. \
IS" Every Machine has the reversible feed motion,
wbieh .nables the operator, by simply turning a
thumb screw, to bare tbe work run either to the
right or left, to stay any part of the seam, or fasten
the ends of seams, without turning the fabric. '
£W" The only Mach ne having a self-adjusting
shuttle tension—the amount of tension atwsys being
in exact proportion to the sice of the bobbin.
Or Changing the length of stitch, and from one
klndot stitch to another, can readily be dune while
the Machine is in motion.
|y The needle is easily adjusted.
It is almost noiseless, and can be used where
quiet Is necessnry.
Ite motions are all positive; there are no
springe to get out of order, and 1U simplicity enables
tbe most inexperienced to operate-It.
V It does not require finer thread oh the under
than for the upper side, and will sew across the
heaviest seams, or from one to more thicknesses of
cloth, without change of needle, tension, or break-
itagthraad. SQ U O Ci
far- The Hemmer is easily adjusted and will turn
any width of hem desired.
fW No other Machine will do so great a range of
work as the Florence.
HT It will hem, fell. Mud, gather, braid, quilt,
and gather and sew on a ruffle at the same time.
The taking up of the alack thread is not performed
by the irregular contraction of a *l r e coil or uncer
tain operation of wire levers. The precision aud ac
curacy with which the Florence draws the thread
Into tbe cloth Is unapproached in any Sewing Ma
chine hitherto offered in the market.
We furnish each Machine with “Bamum’s Sq)f-
Sewer," which guides the work itself, end is of iw
calculable value, especially to inexperienced opera
tors.
tv* It la folly protected and licensed by Elias
Howe, Jr., and bis associates, and our own Letters
Patent.
While possessing the above, and many other ad
vantages, the Florence Ls sold at corresponding prices
with other first class Machines, and a careful exami
nation will fully substantiate all that we have claimed
for it, ami Justify the assertion we now make, that
it is the best hewing Machine in the world.
Wu warrant every Machine to be all that we claim
for It, aud will give a written warranty if required.
Liberal arrangements made with those who buy
to sell again. Further reference may be had by

llubbery of Cotton.
A warehouse occupied by Mr. A. S. Hartridge, in
the alU-y way b-.i’iw Audrew Low A Co.’s office, was
broken even ou Monday night by negroes. The
thieves broke thc\^uter padlock off, and then, by
means of a iJece «»t ir«iu or steel, managed to destroy
Hie inner lock. The door remained in thi3 condition
until after daylight yesterday morning, when a dray
was drm*n up, and two bales of cotton belonging to
Mr. Ilartridgi* were placed upon it and driven off.
Ike dray containing the cotton was seen by several
persons passing along in the eastern direction of the
city, and to pass up Bryan street, but nothing was
thought of the matter. It was. however, discovered
hy Mr. Dowling, of the firm of Moore & Dowling, and
also by Mr. B. A. Hart, a clerk in the employ of E. C-
"ad? & Co, who suspected that all was not right, from
the direction in which-the dray was going, and also
from tjie early hour it was on the street with its con
tents. They overhauled the dray and learned where
the cotton had come from, and immediately had it
cairiccl back, and the drayman arrested.
Mr. Hartridge has instituted legal proceedings
against the drayman, Tom Williams. The case will
shortly be examined, when, in all probability, the

Forestalling.
Harriet Chambers, charged with violating market
ordinance in regard to forestalling, was brought up be
fore His Honor yesterday morning. Tbe market po
liceman testified that Mrs. Chambers waa a huckster,
W:d that he observed her buying three or four pairs of
fowls, and, on seeing him approaching, paid for only
one pair, which she placed alongside a large quantity
she had iu.the market for Bale. The person from whom
the purchase was made stated that the defendant had
bought them all, but on seeing him coming, only kept
the pair she had in her, hand. The accused brought
forward her brother-in-law to testify in her behalf,
*ho staled that lie was the person who purchased the
fowls for his own use, and that he paid the money for
them, notwithstanding the policeman’s evidoaoo to
the contrary. There being rather a conflict of testi

WRIGHT’S
Patent Improved
IRON SCREWJ
FOR
• B3
backing Cotton.
T HE ATTENTION OF COTTON PLANTERS IS
luviteil to the claims of this invention, which, in
SIMPLICITY, ECONOMY, DURABILITY and POW
ER, surpasses any machine for Baling Cotton ever
before presented to the country. Its great excel
lence in these respects makes It
THE BEST MACHINE
FOR PACKING COTTON
IN THE WORLD!
1. ITS SIMPLICITY.—It ls a new and improved
application of the Screw Power; Just as simple In its
consiructioaas tbe old fashioned wooden screw, as
easily managed, and no more liable to get oat of or
der. No ropes or pnllies aa used In the cotton
presses.
3. ITS ECONOMY.—It has been demonstrated by
tntutil experiment to be cheaper than the wooden
screw. The timbers used in Its construction are
much smaller and fewer than those employed In the
old screw; the levers being only 16 feet long, and the
height of the whole frame above the bed being only
10 lest. All these timbers can be procured on tlie
lactation, uomatter how exhausted the forest Any
ordinary wood workman can build the frame, aud
hall a dozen hands will put it np in a few hours.
3. ITS DURABILITY.—'The Screw and Nut are of
iron, and will last for years without any appreciable
wear. The whole machine occupies so little space
that it ran he completely coveted at very small cost.
4. ITS POWER.—WUh a lever only sixteen feet
long, one mule is sufficient for packing the heaviest
bales. Planters who have u$ed it say that with two
mules, cotton may^>e compressed on tips machine
for shipment.
This Screw was invented just before the opening of
the war, and has subsequently never been very geu-
orally Introduced. Those who have used It and seen
it used, unanimously concur in the opinion that it is
UNRIVALLED AS A COTTON SCREW.
Tlie following testimonials from some of the best
and most reputable planters in the country show the
estimate in which this Screw stands with those who
have tried it;
We have used and seen in operation for the last
live years, Wright’s Improved Cotton Iron Screw,
and feel no hesltati- n in pronouncing it the very best
Col ton Screw we have ever known. So highly do
we esteem it, that, if practicable to obtain on« of
them, wo would have no other. It ia easily ba it,
simple in ita construction, not liable to get out of
order, packs well, with great power and with great
facility.
