The facts, as ebovc ielated, which would have been iaised about their have been embodied in the form of affidavits, was tricked into attendance by an vitation from tbe President, while the Tribune asserted that he was there for tbe purpose of watching the President in his treasonable intercourse with the Southern delegates. The leadiug radical papers mani fested great anxiety to create tbe impression that there was no sympathy between Presi dent Johnson and General Grant, whom they claimed as favoring the ultra measures of the late revolutionary Congress. We suspected that their zeal was prompted by their fears, and the denunciations of General Banks only confirms our conviction that tbe influence of General Grant is lost to tbe Radictd taction. It is certainly not giving that gentleman credit for loo much patriotism or good sense to believe him to be unwilling to acquiesce heads by the fanatical opponents of the Presi dent, aud actually fled fropi the jcijyilpjes- cape the reepoaitollitj. THE MEMPHIS AND SAVANNAH RAIL- , ROAD, It is proper that we 'Sbou^f remisd the people of this city of the Railroad Convention to be held at Macon, Ga., on the nth proximo, to take into consideration the importance of the construction of tbe link in tbe Memphis and Savannah Railroad from Opelika toTus- enmbia. As this is an enterprise in which we are largely interested, for the reason that it will redqce the distance between Imre and Memphis nttliy ope hundred miles, Tt is im portant that Savannah shonld be represented in the proposed Convention. We are in formed that Macon, Selma, Memphis, Cairo, St. Louis, Louisville and Cincinnati will be represented. This indicates that the enter prising people of these cities are moving in the right direction; and Savannah mast not be behind them. She must have more rail roads to meet the increasing demand of the commerce, and certainly tbe one of most vi tal interest to ns fa the read to which we have referred. We seed a direct line of communication with tbe great grain growing cosotiy of the West, and they want oar cot ton aad rice. Tha plan we believe tq be pnpiticable sad the sscoesi certain. The Babnwell Sentinel.—We publish elsewhere the advertisement of the Bam well Sentinel, the only paper published in the District of 'Barnwell, S. C. Mr. Edward A. Bronson, the publisher, continued his paper up vo the day of the burning of his town by the Federal forces, when his offi^ and mate rials were destroyed. He resumed about a year ago, and now has a large and valuable circulation. We recommend the paper as an advertising medium to Savannah mer chants desirous of resuming trade with Baro- srell District andvioinity. • More Arrests by the Military.—Lieut. WS-A. Myers, with the file of men whose de parture by the Gulf road we notieed in onr paper of Wednesday morning, returned last evening, bringing with them four white men, one named Abbott, two named Tares, and one whose name we were unable to learn. These men were arrested in Appling eotmty on the charge of shooting a freedman in the head, whose wound, we learn, did not prove mortal. jority of the people of that city may bfi op posed to him, he is still the President of the United States, and is entitled to all the hon ors Which hiB position can. cedfec optin'Wat, aud their wilful omission to do so only shows how bitterly they hate the Si uthera people. Martin, of the French Army, has re cently published in Paris an elaborate work entitled “Military Organization and Power of France and England Compared,” wherein he incidentally gives the following reasons for the poverty and misery of Ireland? The reason is simple; Inland has neither money nor industry; she is therefore obliged to remit her rental in kind to England. Ireland has no money; because the nine- tenths of the proprietors of the Irish soil are absentees, and live in England. She has no industry; because from 1699 to 1782 all the laws were made to prevent the establishment of mannfeotores which might rival the similar products of England. Dur ing that interval of nearly a century, Ireland was so completely distanced by her jealous mistress that it womki now be impossible for her to struggle agatoWBritiah industry. England, then, fa necessarily the market of Ireland. England gives UPthing Md re ceives all; Ireland gives all and gets nothing. Such are the disastrous consequences of the absenteeism of tha industrial monopoly, and of the law of arbitrary ejectments in Ire land, so that it has bean said ur that unhap py country the law helps the famine and the famine helps the law. can be had at ESTILL'S NEWS DEPOT, Ball street, corner of Bay lane, next to the Poet Office (down s'air-.)
