JOHNSTONE, Editor and Publisher Mercantile Index. Savannah, Aug. 23, 1866. SAVANNAH PRICES CURRENT. The proprietor of the News and Hekald has long regretted his inability to secure the services of a competent person to conduct his local commercial departiufeiit, but has now. secured the services of Capt. Geo. H. John stone, publisher of the Mercantile Index, who will furnish full market reports for this journal, and also edit a weekly letter sheet Prices Current, to bo issued from this office. While publishing the Index, we believe his Prices Current had much the largest circula tion and best reputation among the mer chants, of any in the city, being remarkable for its accuracy and general acceptability. We propose to devote all reasonable space, and every exertion to the production of a re liable and complete financial and commercial article each week, and the publication of any important changes each day. Savannah Prices Current. The subscriber desires to announce to his friendc* and the business community generally, that he will continue, from the News and Herald office, the issue of the Weekly Letter Sheet Prices Current, formerly published by him iu connection with the "Mercantile Index,” and respectfully requests a continuance of the liberal patronage hitherto extended him. GEO. H. JOHNSTONE. THE PRESIDENT’S SPEECH AT NEW YORK. We publish to-day a full report of Presi dent Johnson’s speech in New York. It is justly regarded as the great speech ot the tour, and will, doubtless, exercise a power ful influence upon the public mind. The earnest enthusiasm with which tbc President has been received all along his line of travel gives encouraging assurance that the con servative sentiment is rapidly gaining the ascendency, and that with proper organiza tion his supporters will be able to control the general result of the elections this fall The Northern people, alarmed at the reck less revolutionary course pursued by the Radicals, are hailing with delight the inaug uration of a movement that promises an ef fective practical demonstration against the tyranny of th(f mad faction that has taken possession of oar National Legislative halls Never before, perhaps, has a great political cause and its champion been greeted so spontaneously with the favor of the musses, or so heartily encouraged by prominent men representing a diversity of interests. The demagogues who expected to make the President an iostrament by which to advance their personal aspirations, and the gratifica tion of their sectional antipathies, are ashamed and baffled in the presence of the mighty popular spirit which is being awaken ed by his eloquent addresses to the people. The simple issue of a reunited and prospe rous country is broadly presented and deeply traced by Mr, Johnson, so that those who run may read. It appeals to the popular heart upon great national principles that the humblest craftsman can understand as well as the most gifted statesman; principles that the intelligence of the multitude,' now that the animosities engendered by the war are passing away, will recognizfe as constituting the true safeguards of their fotm of govern ment. The new Conservative party will have the material with which to frame an organiza tion that from its Very blnh wty> possess all the elements of supremacy. Judging from the popular dcapa^attatious which bars been accorded to our dhief Magistrate, the party thus ushered into existence, and of which he is the acknowledged leader, will require no slow development of partisan strength, but will spring from the necessity of the crisis, armed at all points, and invested with aU the attributes hr priwW; for the people^by their sad experience have learned the danger and misfortune of subjection to Radical rule.— That the people of the North are beginning to appreciate the importance of redeemiog from desolation and poverty the section of country .that suffered most under the scourge of the late war, and to which the Radical Congress has forbidden the reatoriig in fluences of peace, we think is fully shown by the popular welcome accorded to him who has been struggling almost single handed for the reunion at tke whole political family under the common roof upon terms of equality and brotherhood. If this new party will only adhere, to tbe principles and polfqy so fearlessly enumerated by Ur. Johnson, it will sweep the political arena clear of all revolutionary influences, and will achieve a triumph the grandest and most complete ever known in the history of our country. Decline in Coal.—Coal has experienced a farther decline. At the regular auction safe of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company, in New York, August 29, 40,000 tons were disposed of. Mr. Torlee offered a resolution, authorizing the appointment of a Joint Committee of Five two fioin theand jfiree from t£c Com mon branch—to make necessary arrange ments for a fitting reception of President Johnson, on his proposed visit to Pittsburg.
