"Yon’re clever at drawing, I owig”
Said my beantifnl cousin, Lisette,
As we eat by the window alone;
‘■But, say, can you paint a coquette 1"
••She’s painted already,’’ quoth T;
“Say, nay," said the laughing Lisette,
“Now, none of your joking, hut try t
And paint me a thorough coquette.
‘•Well, cousin,” at once I began
In the ear of the eager Lisette,
“I’ll naint you as well as I can.
That wonderful thing, a coquette.
i ...-. * i-q - . .
“She wears a most beautiful face,
(Ofcourse! said the pretty Lisette.) ,
And isn’t deficient in grace.
Or else she were not a coquette. -
t | O ^
“And then she i^daWttlymaJle,
(A smile from the dainty Lisette,)
By people expert in the trade, /
Of forming a proper coquette.
"She’s the winningest ways with the beaux,
(Keep on, said the winning Lisette,)
But there isn’t a man of them knows
The mind of the fickle coquette 1
“She knows how to weep and to sigh,
(A sigh from the tender Lisette,)
But her weeping is all in my eye—
Sot that of the winning coquette.
“In short, she’s a creature Of *rt,
(Oh, hush! said the frowning Lisette.)
With merely the ghost of a heart—
Enough for a thorough coquette.
"And yet I could easily proto, 1
(Now, don’t! said the angry Lisette,)
The lady is always in love—
In love with herself—the coquette.
“There—do not be angry—yit* Enow;
My dear little consiu Lisette,
You told me * moment sg<v- •
To paint you—a thorough coquette.
don Engineer.that the prize offered at Wimbledon I
the best breech-loader, has been won by an Enfleio
rifle converted, on a plan invented by CoL Berdan, of
this country. „
The Berdan musket was fired from the shoulder,
before the members of the Board, one hundred times
in five and a half minutea—the firs* twenty rounds in
one minute. It had previously been fired three hun-
dred times for the purpose of “foutne” it; had then
been rusted in salt and waters end afterward rolled in
fine sand; and, finaHy, was subjected to proof charges
with the sediment of four hundred charges in it, but
came out in perfect condition, and was again fired with
safety. This extraordinary result Is probably with
out a parallel in the history of small arms.
The rapidity of the fire of thia arm is more than
double that of the famous "needle gun" of the Prua-
sians.—scientific American. ?t. r »
