PRESIDENT JOHNSON
The progress of the President aud his
party of notabilities was a continued ovaliou
from Washington lo Chicago. The hearty
demonstrations of popular approval with
which he was greeted is striking terror into
the hearts of his political and personal enc
mies, aud have had the effect to make them
very savage. They rave aud rant lik© luna
tics, which they are, and abuse the President
without regard to decency or sense. AV|
Cleveland, Ohio, they insulted him, and were
so shameless as to interrupt him and call him
a traitor while he was addressing a crowd
At Chicago they consented very reluctaully,
and after much disgraceful discussion, to the
use of a public hall for the President's re
ception. The Radical sheets in that city did
their utmost lo get up a riot ou- his arrival
there. The President’s friends, however,
were defiant, and notified the mobiles of

ground that while individually they were ini
favor of negro suffrage tbe people of their
Stales were not educated up to that point,
and that, therefore, to .avoid this difficult
question, it Was deatrabte for the Northern
wing of their' party to withhold any expres
sion of opinion on this subject. They even
went so far fislo recenmeuf tft ‘<Ssq*fiern
ism until after the approaching election. It
appears from this that the so-called South-
cm loyalists are likely to be relieved of their
chief responsibilities by the action of their
more cunning friends at the North. These
and other recent developments go conclusive
ly to show that the chief Radical managers
have a concerted and well understood plan
of action at the South as well as the Nortli,

of the two Radical bodies in Philadelphia
aiul the speeches made by many of the most
prominent members of each, are uutiteieirt to
show the spirit, by which’they wrer gifrverhed,
the designs they entertain, and the resolute
purpose with which they are pressing their
schemes for the subversion of the Southern
States. Men so bold and defiant, and yet
cunning and Jesuitioal, are dangerous 1 and
must succeed unless every element of oppo
sition is combined against them to put them
down. As an indication of the ulterior pur
pose of the Southern Radicals, in regard to
negro suffrage and equality, it is only
necessary to cite the following atrocious lan
guage, used in a speech delivered by Horace
Maynard, a delegate firom Tennessee, and a
member of Congress:
I tell yon, gentlemen, thatta a. short time this
gardlcss of consequences.
The Jacobins
then cooled down and ceased inciting vi<>
leuce and ill feeling among the citizens.
These very excesses in which the Radicals
are now indulging, wilt accelerate their fall
and when they go down it will be forever.
They are damaging themselves and not Die
President. He is above the leach of the
shafts of their malice, and can smile at their
malignity.
A dispatch says that the President was to
have left Chicago on Saturday last, for Si
Louis, remaining in the latter city until to
day. Returning to Washington, the Presi
dent will stop at Indianapolis during the
night of the 10th instant, leave Tuesday
morning for Cincinnati, arriving in that city
♦he afternoon of the same day, and remain
there until 10 o’clock Wednesday morning,
12th inst., when he will leave for Columbu
arriving in that city at 3 o’clock in the after
noon, and remaiu there until Thursday morn
ing, the 13th inst. ; leave at 8 o'clock A. M.
lor Pittsburg, and remain in the latter city
daring Thursday night, and on Friday morn

Hon. R. M. T. Hunter, of Virginia —
The Richmond Times of Tuesday last, says:
‘•We had the pleasure of meeting the distin
guished Virginian, R. M. T. Hunter, in town
yesterday. He is living quietly at his place
in Essex, attending to farming matters with
great energy, and striving to retrieve his for
tune and repair the losses inflicted by the
war. Since the close of the war his family
afflictions have been great, and it was but
last week that he Was called on to follow to
the grave a beloved sister, the fourth mem

Georgia road. Not only are the advantage*
of the trade w'ub the fertile regions of FIor- :
ida, but the advantages of 8t. Andrew’s, as
the other terminus of the Atlantk: and Gulf

hear from (be Florida papers on the subject'.
Our capitalists are not usually behind hhud
in coming forward when they are to share
the benefits. The route from that part of
Florida, via Atlantic ami Gulf Railroad, is
the most patronized by travelers, even with
the disadvantage of twenty miles of stage.
The completion of the Live Oak road writ
draw the entire travel that way. We shall-
feel as though our interests were identified
with the people in that extension.
Cheat Labor from China.—A Chinese
Commissioner named A. H. Yue is on his
way to New York from San Francisco. He
is accompanied by an interpreter and by Mr.
Robert F. Strichlan, an American, who has
been many years in China. The object of A.
H. Yue’s virtt to -tbe East is to introduce
Chine re laborers Into the United States, and
with this view he will travel through the
Southern, Western and Eastern States, offer
ing to furnish field hands.
Mii-itary Honors at a Discount.—A
meeting was held oil the League House, in
Philadelphia, last week, and was addressed
by General Wilson, of Massachusetts, who
abased the President in the grossest manner.
Daring his discourse a wounded soldier int*r-
rupted him and desired him to ccaM reviling
the President, whereupon those around him,
net regarding bis scars, soon hustled him cut,
and the speaker proceeded.
Return of Governor Jenkins.—The Au
gusta Chronicle learns from a gentleman,
who parted from Gov. Jenkins at Washing
ton, that he expected to reach Augusta on
Saturday Hb has been very successful in
all the objects of his visit, both in New York
and Washington, and expresses great gratifi
cation at the tone of popular feeling at. the
North, and at the results of the Philadelphia
Convention.
French Diplomacy.—In relation to the
Mexican question in France, ^correspondent
says: The Paris telegram about the failure of
tbe Empress’ mission Is looked upon here as
a genuine canard—just the kind of story that
Louis Napoleon would like to have set
to throw dost in the eye# of the United
States while be is perfecting his plans in
Mexico. Yon will note that Maximilian haa
appointed all Frenchmen as officers of hia
Cabinet - and farther, that French troops are
enrolling themselves promptly in the ‘‘Impe

his oath would not be granted him. But how stands

The following handsome tribute to the
firmness, constancy and integrity of the
President, is from the Richmond Times:
The workmen amid the buried ruins of
Pompeii, while excavating near the gates of
the city one day, discovered aud dug up the
skeleton of a Homan soldier, who had died at
his post, when all others had escaped from
that portion of the town. Solitary and alone
he had stood there for centuries, upright in
the solid lava, helmet on hie head, shield
upon his arm, and javelin in his baud. Ter
rified thousands had fled through those gates/
where he walked his lonely beat, and perhaps
escaped the impending doom.' Bat the
dauntless sentinel, who stood there on that
awful day of volcanic wrath, was neither re
lieved nor ordered away by the officer who
posted him, and he paced his beat till suffo
cating ashes - and monlten lava buried hint
erect at his post. Amid the hbrrors of that"
day he had been forgotten, and left to perish
on hi9 post, and to be exhumed centuries
afterwards to present to mankind the sub-
limest example ever known of heroism,
fidelity to duty and of subjection to the ste.n
discipline of old Borne.
We have often thought that the moral
grandeur of this spectacle was unequalled by
anything wc hail ever met with in history
or romance, and never, until Andrew John
son stood last winter a sentinel, solitary and
alone, at the gates of the temple of ewnstitu-
lional liberty, was there in politics so true a
counterpart of the courage, fidelity anil de
votion of that Roman soldier. And when
-the history of these times shall, hundreds of
years hence, be perused by the student cir‘
statesman, theattitudeof the President, Irom
the time be took his post until the Philadel
phia Convention came to his assistance, will
ever be regarded as a crowning instance of
heroism and endurance seldom presented in
the annals of the human race. The ashes
and lnva of Radicalism have fallen around
and rolled past him ; but faithful, resolute
and unmoved, like the Roman sentinel at the
gate? of Pompeii, he cannot be driven, from
his charge, but, if need lie, witli sword,
shield and helmet, is ready to perish rather
than flee. Unlike the Roman soldier, be will
not perish in the midst ot universal death
and min. Through the dread and fiery or
deal he will pass unscathed, to illustrate wbat
the fortitude and fearlessness of one man’9
unaided will and virtue can achieve. To
future ages will be transmitted, in terms of
glorious praise, the instructive lesson of his
patriotic greatness-
Events, contemplated through the atoms
pliere of the present, are like physical oh
jecla received through the reversed lenses of
the telescope ; their fall size and propor
tion* are not realized. But let posterity
gaze at them throngh that correctly-adjusted
telescope, famished by a long vista of de
parted years, and what, to ns, seem little
twinkling stars will, to coming generations
of men, assume the gigantic outlines of
colossal worlds. Just so are we liable to
fail in appreciating the grandeur and magni
tude of those acts and that unflinching cour
age, by means of which the President has
called anew and powerful party iolo ex
istence, and has dealt to Radicalism death
blows that will make -U, like a loathsome,
wounded snake, crawl ia agony to Its hole,
there to wither in venom and die in pain.
The forth of the patriot .President will tower
like a mouotain in the landscape of Amrficau
history, and the measure of his fame will in
crease with each revolving year. That popu-
lag enthusiasm which now greets him ia but
a faint echo of those plaadits with which un
born millions of his felipw citizens will b<
after hail hia name and perpetuate bis memo
ry when bis efforts shall have restored tbe
Uaion of our fathers.
