VERMONT ELECTION.
No dcfiuitc information has yet come to
hand in regard to tbe election in Vermont
*Qn» telegraphic statement that the Radical
majority is largely increased over that of last
year ueed9 confirmation. But if correct, it
should not be regarded as an indication ot
like results in the elections yet to come ofl
in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The
Conservatives in Vermont have hut little to
encourage them, as the State has always
been strongly, and even hopelessly against
them. They go to the polls knowing they
are to he defeated. This is the case in all of
the New England States except Connecticut.
We notice, however, that the Conservatives
made considerable gains in the only county
in Vermont thus far reported. Rutland
county, last year, was: Republican, 474;
Democratic, 288; Republican majority, 18ti.
This year it is: Republican, 825; Demo
cratic, jjiOO; Republican majority, 226 ; Re
publican gqjn in majority, 39. Thus it ap-
pearsthat the Conservatives in Rutland have
increased their .vote this yep over that oi
lost by three hundred and twelve. This ex
hibit is ratlier favorable to the Conservatives,
as showing they are incrau^ig in strength
notwithstanding the overwhelming opposi
tion they have to encounter. In the New
Eogland States the Republicans have always
been more active, besides having the advan
tage in the number of speakers and in tbe
thoroughness of their organization. The
Radicals of New England, conscious of their
svipeyority in these respects, have worked
liard to increase their majorities, and it is
not unlikely they have succeeded to some
extent. The Republicans carried all these
States last year by large majorities. $
THE BLACK AND TAN CONVENTION
We have already devoted more space to
the proceedings of tbe bogus convention of
pretended Southern loyalists in Philadelphia
than the importance of the body justified!
We desired that our readers should be in
formed of the action of the itinerant vaga
bonds who assumed to represent Southern
constituencies in a conclave of negroes, strong
minded women and Northern radMjilN. UpH
the whole aftair has fallen so far^low con
tempt that we do not consider “the show
worth tbe candle," and shall therefore giw
no farther synopsis of their proceedings,
contenting ourselves with the .following
worthy summing up of the closing scenes of
the disgraceful affair, from the New Ybrt’Jl
Herald:
“The band of negro minstrels performing
at the National Hall, in Philadelphia, con
cluded their engagement by a grand brftfik-
'^down and walk around yesterday. But few
delegates from the border States were present,
and Mr. Speed,, who occupied the chair dur-
ing the opening chorus, soon afterwards re
tired. A series of complimentary resolu
tions and thaqk offerings, tbe precursors of
dissolution, were offered, the tJpion Club,
tbe Tribune and Independent newspaper^
being the "recipients. Mil Newman hocused
