Ckrricr, Georgetown, D C-CL Oblby 4^ Schooner Transit, /Godfrey, Yonge & Co. ,> New York—Philip county, which, ludicrous as it was, affords a striking illustration of the mutual suspicion and distrust ex isting between whites and blacks in some of our coun try districts. We give the circumstances as they were related to us: A countryman, very nearly deaf, whose name we do not remember, was driving a pair of mules attached to a wagon, when he was met on the road by a negro on foot, who bore an axe on his shoulder. The man •n the wagon was about taking a chew of tobacco, when the negro stopped suddenly and asked him for a chew, which was promptly given him. The negro returned Ins thanks for the quid, looking steadfastly at tlie white man and repeating the words, “Thank you, sir,” several times. The white man's hearing being very dull, and not liking the negro's appear ance, he imagiued that a demand was made for his money, and, in great alarm, replied that he had none. The negro, perceiving the misapprehension and that the inau was very deal, shouted, “I didn't ax you for no money.’' But the man in his fright heard only the word “money.’’ While the negro was endeavoring to explain, the mules, whu had been neglected by their driver in his fright, sheared off to the opposite aide of the road, and were about to upset the wag On, when the negro seized the $e|ns to bring them bac;, which action bn his part only confirmed the dregful suspicion of the white m&u, who, in great yviic, sprang from hi* wagon and took to the woods at full speed. The negro, anxious to convince the man that bo meant him no harm, followed in pursuit, shouting to him to stop. The race continued for some distance, but the negro being the fleetest was rapidly gaining on the terrified white man, who seeing that he was about to be overtaken turned to encounter his pursuer. As the negro approached with vociferous assurances of kindly intentions, find holding his axe in his hand, the wliito man made a spring at him and a desperate struggle for the possession of the axe en sued. Iu the strife the white man got control weapon, when the negro, for his protection, closed with him and succeeded in thro wing him to Hie ground, the 1 white man all the time pleading for life, and the negi# using all his eloquence to convince him that he meant ho harm. They remained some time on the ground locked in each other’s embrace, the white man ding ing desperately to the axe and literally turning a deaf ear to the emphatic assurances of tke negro, who now afraid to let him up for fear that in bis alarm he might kilil him with thd axe. In this dilemma, each distrusting the other, in spite of their protestations, it was finally agreed that the Q egro would let the white man up on condition that the axe to which the fetter still clung should be- thrown away. Watching other like tigers, they r °ae from the ground, the negro holding the white man " ar ms from the rear, until, with a swipgof his Memoranda. Steamship Wm ^fibbett^ a*eports—Left Boston Wednesday night. Sept. 5th ; Sunday, 9th, 25 miles south of Hattera9, passed etean&ships San Salvador and Tonawanda, bound North; out-ide, large bark, bound in* ^y, the axe was thrown from their reach, when they ^parated, running in opposite directions, the white fcan hatles9 and with his clothes nearly tom from his P er son, shouting “Murder! help 1 ” at the top of his voice. ^fctTor lending fleetness to his legs, he was not long j? reac ‘-diig a house a short distance from the scene of the coufli c t Breathless wit} oxertion and alarm, he his story, declaring that he had narrowly,es- esped being robbed and murdered, and demanli a nus and asMistanee to go in pursuit of the robber. In the midst of tbe excitement which his appearance and relation of the affair had created, the negro, scarcely less alarmed and excited, approached and immediate ly surrendered himself. He made his statement to ‘hose present, but as the principal party in the affair *as still ihcrodulous, and could not be persuaded that be had mode a narrow escape with his life, it was dually determined to detain the negro in custody till the next morning, frhan he was to be taken to the Trcedmen*8 Bureau far a hearing. Accordingly, hip physical wants having been amply supplied, he was tied, and his supposed intended fictim, armed with a Bui), placed over him as a guard. In the morning the 'leaf man was found lying fast asleep, and the negro was not found at all. f. Imports. Cotton.—In New York the advance in Sterling and Hie good demand now prevailing has considerably im proved that market, which has been responded to here. Yesterday a much better tone was evinced, holders being decidedly stiffer la the higher grades of even morning lots, though poorer cottous are still neg lected. We quote at 30 to 31c. for New York Inid- tilings. It should be remembered, however, that the few buyers here, and the small and undesirable stock of fering, precludes as yet aay idea of a regular market. The receipts are very light Tlie old crop is pretty thoroughly marketed, and but little of the new is ready for transportation. The movement in the sta ple is much impeded by toe law requiring the tax of three cents to bo paid before shipment and not as heretofore, at the ports. An effort is being made, however, to remedy this, which it is thought will be successful. By the first of October we may expec full arrivals. The Chop.—East of the river w* continue to ge very diverse accounts of the prospect, though on tbe whole decidedly more favorable than some time pre vious.
