GEO. H. JOHNSTONE, Editor and Publisher Mercantile Index Savaunalff Aug. 23, 1866. AN ERROR CORRECTED, Mr. Beecher, in bis recent letter'to ttfe Committee of the soldiers find sailors’ Con vention, makes the following statement: “Churches in the North .crown every hill, and schools swarm in evfery • neighborhood ; while the South has but few-scattered lights, at long distances, like light-houses “twinkling along the edge of a continent of darkness." The reflection upon the Southern States 'Is entirely gratuitous, and is indeed a palpable misrepresentation, as the following facts, which appeared in the-United States census of 1830 will show. In 1850 there were 21,887 cliurche3 in the Northern States, and 16,658 in the Soutberh States. The proportion, 1 church to 628 person in the North, and 1 church to 562 persons in the South. The accommodations of these churches were 8,656,061 sittings for 13,434,922 personsNorth, and 5,541,875, sit tings for 9,66463^ persons South- Thu?, 64 persona out of 100 could gttend service at the same thne’**’^ ICO in the South, including whites and slaves alike. Thus thp Northern States had only 7 per cent, greater accommodations than the Southern. Surely the diferance indicated by this statement does not warrant -Hie Charge of heathenism upon the Southern people. But if we include the negroes, as lias been asserted by many .Northern ^papers-, and| preachers* from our churches, We ha&Aheso? results: rafrw German ■THE to IK* SOUTH AMFigcy nize more fuUy its advantages, if not its ab- the advancement cfhWwilBMSVlM ifiwwsstvir Thb opposition manifested towards it by the friends of rival roads contributed as potently os- the efforts gf jts advocates to secure its completion, of its merits ol its claims as a railroad connection between the Gulf of Mexico and the States bordering on the Atlantic, from Main _ f •To illustrate the eorrecttieW of^6tir vifeWs on’ thir^snbject we may eite the %ct that a Middle Florida merchant has ordered the ahipmewi. of his fall stock of goods purchased in New York via Savannah and the Florida Connection, to avoid the protracted and hazardous transit around to iJt. Marks. By the former route ho will re- cive his merchandise certainly in six, and it may be in five days; by the latter consign ments are BfiubMj fieoe^redda a shfij period thato fiiflaeea dHy^jand not qneutly are en route four and five weeks. And then the cost of transportation by the jjew route will exceed very little, if any, the freight charges and Ugk -safes of • insurance-, for ocean transit to St. Mark s, and the ex pense incidental to transshipment from that .point to the interior. t x ^ ^ y We are happy to State that the managers of the Atlantic and Gulf Boad and the inter secting Florida branch,-prompted by enlarged views and a comprehensive liberality, have resolved to so cheapen the cost of transporta tion between this city and the Florida juiiii- tiem'-as to make it the great thoroughfare- for travel and traffic between the Gull and the Atlantic. Let all these things be well con sidered, and we fear not to predict that the Florida connection will impress itself era the public mind as one of the most important projects of the times. Sectional' interest and local predilectiomrtnay profess to have more eligible routes passing their own doors by which the Northeast and Southwest may be united, but the logic and eloquence of sec tional pleading are weak in the light of advantages which, although imperfectly sketched by us, must force themselves upon the favorffble consideration tof , aB the! cocry- mercial communities - interested in the rail road Union of two great sections of our country.
