On Sunday, at one o’ ingto previous arrangement, Capt. James B. Bads called at tne Linden Hotel for the President BeeeeUry Seward and bectstery Welles, and with them pro ceeded to the house of Mr. Bates. The latter seemed much affected on seeing his dratiaguisbed associates, and thanked them most feelingly for their visit to.one who, he said, was a dying man. He apoke, however, with the greatest cheerfulness pf his expected dissolu tion. Having lived three score years and thirteen, ho had had three more years than he was entitled to. His remarks to Mr. Seward were exceedingly touching. He had never expected to sda him alive again, and this was just so much clear gain for him. Mr. Welles he addressed as one whoVas near , to him by ties of friendship and mutual trial, beyond What he could express. He spoke to the President aa one who had a greater weight of cares <md Responsibilities than any fifty men in the nation, and thanked God for believing that he was one or the most worthy that could have been selected to perform Jga obligations to the whole country. The President at parting assured Mr. Bates that his last interview with himrfn Washington was fresh in his memory, as well dfe each word of good advice and encouragement he had then given hup, and that ho could not express the pleasure it gave of having it in fiis power now to do himself the honor of to see him. # The parting of Mr. Bates and Mr. Seward was ex ceedingly touching, but the kind words of each cannot be recalled. The eyes of both were moistened, and the deep feelings with which all four of these great statesmen were affected will long bo remembered by those who witnessed their farewell visit to the revered and honored patriot of Missouri. {Front, the Galveston News.] CROPS IN TEXAS. Letter from Lavaca Conaty. Rural Retreat, Lavaca Co., I August 30, I860, j Editors News : Believing It might not be uninter esting to some of your readers to hear something of the crop prospects in this section and farther west, I will state that the worm commenced a partial devasta tion upon the cotton on the Lavaca, river and tributa ries a few weeks since, afterwards "webbed up” and left us to conclude that the plant was perhaps free from any farther molestation, but recently myriads of the young worms appeared, and are carrying on their work of destruction upon, such a gigantic scale that in a few days more, the rich foilage of the cot ton plant will exist only in the memory of the past* The negroes have not worked well in this section, Ad the growth of the cotton pi int was checked for want of timely culture, consequently the proportion of ma tured boils Upon the stalks is small, and not more then one-fourth of a crop will be realized. On a trip recently made to Sweet Rome and farther west, in the vicinity of Concrete* t found w similar state of things existing. The farmers here wear long faces, and would like to devise some plau to dispense with "Coffee” and the worm. .. C. LF.^IER By Telegraph. MORNING DISPATCHES. THE, SOLDIERS’ AND SAILORS’ CON VENTION.
