Clenred, Bteamahlp City of Bath, Lover ell, Boston—Rich- anMoa k Barnard. Schooner Margaret and Lucy, Oriatw, Jackton- ville, in ballast—Master. ii.'iTT-, . Hons, Rbwtx—It is distressingly trne that in this city we labor under tbe disadvantage of not having a sufficiency of dwellings, and this places many persons the mercy of the landlords, many of whom, wane gret to say, are seemingly taking advantage of those who, from necessity, live in rented tenements. The subject of extortionate house rents is exsroising tk«. minds of hundreds of our citizens, and we but apeak tha truth that the pressure >s becoming too great to bear. Wo have boen informed by intelligent persons that this grievance has assumed a greater magnitude Savannah than anywhere else, but it Is ball enough everywhere, according to the accounts that rea. h Us through the medium of our ercliauges. This intolera ble barrier, if not lightened by liberal action on ths part of property holders, must xesnlt iu decline depopulation. Rentals are out of all proportion to profits or salaries, aud therefore bear with crushing weight upon those whose busiucss necessities ..nd en gagements prohibit tbelr removal. We have been told that It is lost labor to declaim against the extor tion of laudlords; that whether right or wrong, they will, as a general rule, take all they can get. This may be the case with some, but there are many who are not insensible to the claims of humanity, and to this class we appeal, with tho remark that whatever msjf be thought of the cause or the cure of the evil, there is no doubt of the fact that a large portion of the people of Savannah are now ground to the dual by oppressive exactions for house rent. We know it is hard for landlords to realize the fact, bat it is never theless true, aud we sincerely hope they will check tbe growing evil by the application of tho proper reme dies. A Thief who Repudiates Specie.—Wo learn that a thiel or thieves entered tue dwelling of a widow la dy residing in the eastern portion of the city a few days since, during her temporary absence, and after breaking open several drawers proceeded to a trunk, which he also broke open and nnluckily discovered about one hundred dollars in greenbacks, which he appropriated to bis own uae. In the same trunk, we are informed, there waa over toe amount of green backs in both sHvercoiu and bank bills. Probably the thi-f wanted the money for present use, and iatomh, re.uuding it in some shape or other at a future day, and thought that be could better doeoiu greenheet* than in either of tbe ot ar currencies to ths trunk. He, however, managed to escape with hla booty and lias not since been discovered. Mseioraads.
