The Daily News and Herald. MONDAY MORNING. OCTOBER 1.186C. •[From the Catholic World.] My Soldier. “ Dear heart, ” he said, “ I love yon so, I dare not offer yon my love Till passion purified in woe Shall worthier offering happily prove. * Then let us part Mere absence is To love like mine enough of pain, Aa presence is enough ot bliss; So welcome loss that leads to gain. “ Yes, let us part. The bugles call; For Ood and you I draw the sword; Your tears will bless me if I fall. And if I live your kise reward.” He said, and parted. Long I staid To watch while tears would let me see, And longer, when he vanished, prayed That God might bring him back to me. Ah me I it was a selfish prayer To rob him of the nobler part; And God hath judged more wisely. Bear • His judgment humbly, bleeding heart t Alas! 1 know not if 1 sin; In vain. I wrestle with my woe, In vain I strive from grief to win That loftiar love he sought to know. Mine is a woman’s love alone— • A woman’s heart that wildly cries, Oh 1 give me—give me back myT>wn, Or lay mo where my soldier lies 1’* Medical. In Greneral. —Gen. McClellan has Written a letter ap proving the proceedings of the Philadelphia National Convention. —Two Canadian farmers have manufac tured a cheese weighing three and one halt tons. It is not a pine apple cheese. —Victor Emanuel possesses the largest emerald extant. It is six inches in length, four in breadth and three in thickness. — Jack Hamilton, at Cleveland, spoke of Gen. Grant as a “supple tool in the hands of tyrant and usurper.” [Applause.] —A movement is afoot to establish in the Episcopal Church in this country heierarchi- eal grades similar to those of t>he Church of Englan d. — While unseen by each other at a Rich mond auction room, husband and wife run up an article from five to thirteen dollars. The wife won. —The receipts of Ristori’s first perform ance in New York were $3,100, of which the tragedienne gets $1,000, and Jenkins 20 shil lings. —Gen. Elzey, formerly of the Confederate army, has purchased a tract of land near Jo seph's Cut, in Anne Arundel county, Mil, on which.he is erecting a handsome residence. —Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote some verses for Fox to present to the Emperor of Russia, and they are published in the St. Pe tersburg Vedmoste, duly credited to “Oliver Vendel Golms.” —Ma imilian is said to be greatly pleased at the caricatures of himself in the New York picture papers. Instead of getting an gry he chuckles consumedly over their sati rical allegory. —The Avalanche of the 25th reports the number of cases of cholera for the preceding forty-sight hours at 105, and deaths during the same time, 94. Of these, 10 were whites ant) 45 negroes. —Burton, while traveling on a steamboat, seated himself and called for a beefsteak. The waiter furnished him with a small strip of the article. Taking it upon his fork, and turning over and examining it with one of his peculiar looks, he coolly remarked: “Yes, that’s it; bring me some.’’ —A newspaper correspondent has discov ered in Suffolk, Virginia, two negro children, a brother and sister, who have fiv% perfect fingers and a thumb on each hand. Had na ture similarly favored Butler, how he would have extended and enlarged upon his “op portunities.” —No Government has yet been Installed in St. Domingo, and that little Republic is given up to the disorders attendant on a state of anarchy. Hayli is in the Bame condition. Outlaws overrun the country, and horrible crimes are committed with impunity. —Hon. George S. BontweU last week ad dressed the citizens of Marlboro, Massa- chusets, and in the course of his remarks stated that Jno. Surrat who was implicated in the assasination of Mr. Lincoln, was now in Europe; that the place of his abode was on the records of the War and State Depart ments, and was known to many officers of the Government. —A woman was lately arrested in Water bary, Connecticut, who had been detected in stripping the hair fro am horse’s tail. She gave as an excuse that the outrageous price of hair made it impossible for her to meet the demands of fashion, and she had to resort to this ingenious and moral way to keep up appearances. —Dawison, the GermaD Garrick, is draw ing all the Teutons to the Stadt Theatre. His conceptions of Shakespearian characters are so startlingly original as to bewilder the American critics, and they are, as yet, unde cided whether he is a genius or not. The Germans have apparently decided in the af firmative with great unanimity. —peaking of “tillers,” reminds us ot a story of a certain famous Massachusetts judge. Once upon a time, as he rode up to the door of a country inn, he saw the land lady’s daughter jump over the fence. “Do that again, Sally, and.I’ll marry you,” he said. The girl again leaped the fence. The judge was as good as^ hia word, and a year from that day married the light-heeled Sally. He was, doubtless, a good judge of ankles. ■—The great oil sensation has died out. We no longer hear ot fortunes being made in a day, and a ten-acre tract of land selling for a tabulous price. The oil regions of Penn sylvania are all but deserted, and property which sold for thousands upon thousands of dollars a year ago, can now be had for asong. The failure of Culver, Penn & Co., pricked the bubble, scattered the speculators to the four winds, and ruined hundreds in a finan cial noint of view who bad invested their “all” in. the prospect of striking “ile.” —The negroes of Houston, Texas, aDd the surrounding country, are represented as be ing nearly all armed; 'some with pistols, others with old army muskets, shot-guns, etc., which they procured at the time Kirby StnitR and Magrader's armies fell to pieces. A large number of them are camped around in the vicinity of Houston, of both sexes and all ages, and their subsistence is derived in a small degree by bunting, bnt chiefly bysteal- Ing hogs, poultry, and eggs from the Neigh boring citizens. . Bis tori had a. second triumphant recep tion at the French Theatre on Saturday night. She played “Medea” for the second *|m«, This week she crosses to Brooklyn, playing two mghta there alternating with her New York nights. Her next character will be Mary Stuart, the unfortunate Queen of Boots. The prices of admission to Ristori’s performances have been so high as to exclude the masses of the people, but manager Gran -has concluded to throw open the upper part of the theatre hereafter to all lovers of art who can raise seventy-five cents.
