e^ledby the disasters which have Uftllen or
it, is disclosed by a comparison of actual re
ceipts so far at this and. other ports with
those of former years. The falling off thus
shown is even greater than the lower esti
mates named. It is apparent, indeed, that
the receipts the present season have ngt
amounted to more than one twelfth of tbtki
received in the same time of 1859.
The following statement, taken from the
Columbus Enquirer of the 3d inst., exposes
the indbrrectness of t^e higher estimates
heretofore made of the present crop.
“New Obi.ea.ns.—Receipts of September
1859 140,000 bales; of September, 18CG, 10,-
496—only a little over one-fourteenth the
receipts of 1859.
“Mobile—Receipts of September, 1859
about 46,000 (three days in the early part of
the month estimated); of September, l&GG,
3,498 bales—about one-twelfth, of the re-'
eepts of 1859.
• ‘Savannah.— Receipts of September, 1859,
18,300 bales; of September, 1866, 8,487bales,
nearly one-half the receipts of 1859.”
The correctness of the inference drawn
from these figures is, as the Enquirer say*,. ^ ^
strengthened by the fact that all the lines offi the^roujld;
transportation that existed in 1859 are nojvf ""
in operation, and the water communications
have been better this year than then. The
only consideration, it remarks, that might
make the crop later in getting to market this
year than in 1859, is the backwardness of the
crop, but that is a condition that seriously
affects its amount, and is another fact sug
gestive of a very short crop. ,

is as follows; Minnesota lorty per cent-, Il
