WEDNESDAY HORNING. OCTOBER IT. ISM.
TRli IOTE KNOT. -
Tying her bonnet under her chin.
She tied her raven ringlets in.
But not alone in the silken snare.
Did she catch her lovely floating hair.
.For. tying her bonret nmteTeti^ ..
> strolling together up fee hill.
Where the wind comes blowing merry and chill,
And it blew the curia a frolicsome race.
All over the happy peach colored face.
Till, scolding and laughing, she tied them in,
- utiful dimple‘ ‘
They '
Under her boauti
npledchin.
And it blew a color, bright as the bloom
Ol the pinkest fuschia’s tossing plume.
All over the cheeks of the prettiest gin
That ever imprisoned a romping earl;
Or, in tying her bonnet under chin.
She tied a young man’s heart within.
Steeper and steeper grew the hill—
Madder, merrier, chillier still.
The Western wind blew down and played
The wildest tricks with the little maid,
As, tying her bonnet under chin,
She tied a young man’s heart within.
Oh, Western wind, do yon think it was fair.
To play snch tricks with her floating heir?
T > gladly, gleefully do y.ur best
To blow her against the young man’s breast.
Where, as gladly folded her in.
And kissed her month and dimpled chin?
Oh, Eler.- Vano. yon little thought
An hour ago, when you besought
This country lass t0 walk witl1 J° u '
After the sun has dried the dew.
What perilous danger you’d be in.
As she tied her bonnet under her chin.
In General.

been pardoned by the President.
—The Eug'ish Admiralty have issued
notice to mariners, cautioning them about
dropping anchors on the Atlanlic Cable.
—The reporters at the Rome Catholic
Council in Baltimore, are outdone. The de
bates are carried on iu Latin, and pencil and
paper is useless to them.
—St. Louis is doiug a considerable amount
of business directly with Europe. In the
first eight months the collections in the Cus
tom House amounted to $556,076.
—It is reported that Thurlow Weed has
withdrawn from the New York Times, being
unable to harmonize with H. J. Raymond.
It is rumored that Weed will start a new
paper.
—A dispatch dated New Orleans, October
10th, says; “Cotton advices are very dis
couraging. The general estimate of this
year's crop now amounts to less than 1,000,
000 bales.
—The Texas Legislature has appointed a
Joint Committee to proceed to New Orleans
and remove the remains of Albert Sidney
Johnston to Austin.
—R. E. Launitz, the monument designer
and builder, from New York, has come to
Georgia to erect a superb monument over the
remains of Col. Joseph Bond, late of Macon,
Georgia.
—A gentleman entered the room of Dr.
Barton, warden of Merton College, and told
him that Dr. Vowal was dead. “What,” said
he, *Dr. Vowel dead! Thank Heaven it
was neither U nor I.”
—Gen. Palfrey, in command of Fort Jack-
son, below New Orleans, who bad been ab
sent on a short furlough, was a passenger on
the Evening Star, with his wife, sister and
child.
—We understand that Gen. J. B. Magru-
der, late G. S. A., is expected soon to arrive
at New Orleans or New York, from Mexico.
He has, it appears, given up all intention of
residing there.
—Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton presents
herself in a card to the voting population of
the 8th Congressional District of New Xork
as a candidate for Representative in Con
gress.
—If black dresses have staius upon them,
boil a handful of fig leaves in a quart of wa
ter and reduce it to a pint; and a sponge in
this liquid and rubbed upon them will en
tirely remove stains from crape, bombazines,
Ac.
—The old Roman capital in the South of
Britain has been unearthed. The main street
and a street from it have been laid open, to
gether with two large Roman houses with
tessalated pavements. The walls which sur
rounded the capital were three miles in
length.

sist him against Congress he Wbuld be de
stroyed.
—The wives of English ecclesiastical dig
nitaries do not partake of the sacred titles of
their lords. It is rather funny to read in the

and Mrs. Tait.”

who killed young Taylor in a recent duel, at

Remorse, he says, is the cause.
—Mr. Johnson is understood to believe
that his impeachment will be attempted, and
he has ordered barracks for 30,000 troops to
be erected at Washington, Perhaps this in
dicates the reception he intends to give his
