The Lost Steamer Evening Star. l^urt her- Details of the Disaster. ARRIVAL OF THE SECOND OFFICER IN THIS CITY. Mr. \Vm. A. Goldie, the 2d officer of the lost steamer Evening. Star, whose'arrival at the mouth.of the St. John’s river we reported in opr issue ot Wednesday last, reached this city last evening, and has hindly furnished us with the following hastily- prepared, though strictly, correct narrative Of the foundering of the Evening Star, and his peril ous ’voyage front mid ocean to * the Florida coast: Left New York Saturday, S'o’clock P.. M., having on board 250 cabin anS steerage pas sengers, and a cre w of 70 persons. Crossed the Bar at Sandy Hook. 'At CP. M., dis charged pilot. Strong breezes Irom the N. E., with rain and heavy sea. Monday, 8 A. M. made Cape Hatteras; moderate breeze and heavy swell lrom S. E-; crossed the Gulf stream as usual.' At midday on Tues day, 2d iust., fresh gale from N. E. and cloudy ; all sail, set ship making efoveD knotg per hour. Four P. M., blowing a heavy gale with a tremendous sea;' the ship making bad weather; took in all sail and hauled bead to the sea. At 8 P. M., blowing a tremen dous hurricane, and wind changing to all points of the compass'; all of the crew at .their several stations ready for any emergen cy iu case of accident. Ilf P. M. a heavy sea struck the ship on her Port quarter, carrying away steerage gear and t hrowing one of the quartermasters o ver, the wheel, breaking his right arm. The ship fell off into the trough of the sea. Hooked relieving tackles immediately; shipped a heavy sea, carrying away paddle boxes. and bursting in engine room doors, besides breaking steam pipe and Ailing the engine and tire room with water, putt’Dgoul the fires in the furnaces. The engineers im mediately had donkey lire boiler to pump ship; all hands, including the male passen gers, at work hailing the ship. At midnight a heavy sea struck the ship, carrying away the donkey smoke pipe and filling the ship with water, putting out fires in donkey boiler. Got steam on again as soon as possi ble, the water gaiuing fast. All of the lady passengers at work bailing water from tbe after saloon, under tbe supervision of the Purser and Steward. At 4 A. M. Oapi. Knapp gave me orders to have all the boats ready, - with oars, breakers, provisions aod compasses well secured in them; and report to him, which was immediately attended to At 4:30 A- M. I had all the boats ready as ordered, and reported Dm Mine to Captain Knapp; at 51 M. ship whs settling fast. Capt. .Knapp went to tbe saloon door and told the ladies that he bad done all that laid in bis power to save the ship; that she pould float hut a short time longer, and for them all to repair to the boats, each of which bad an officer stationed at them to take charge and see that the passengers were properly placed iu the boats. Tbe ladies all came on deck without any excitement, and very calmly went to the boats. In my boat there were, as Dear as I could judge, between forty and fifty ladies. * I unhooked tbe tackles and swung the davitts clear of the boats; tbe boat siiii remaining in her chocks on deck. In a few minutes after tbe boa ts cleared, the ship settled forward to tbe top of her rails and gave a surge aft and went down, carry ing all with her. - Ou coming to the enrface, the first thing I got hold of was the top of the after house, i saw my boat about thirty feet from me, bottom up, and a number of sailers clinging to her. 'I immediately made for her, got on to the bottom and hauled up four ladies on to the boat with me, and by surging to one side, succeeded in righting her. I then paid my attention to getting the ladies into the, boat, and succeeded in rescuing twenty-nine 1 of them. On examining my- boat I found everything had been washed out'of her. We managed to get the boat clear of the wreck, but not until a number of my passengers had been killed by floating Mrri* from the wreck washing over the boat. I saw another boat -with but two persons (passengers) in her.— They having oars, I motioned them to pull ahead to keep clear of my boat, but they not knowing how to manage her, she came foul of me. capsizing my boat. On again regain ing it, I succeeded in righting her, and picked up four ladies and four gentlemen, cabin passengers, the remainder having been drowned by the capsizing of the boat. In about one hour after I picked up another pas senger, a French gentleman of the opera troupe. 1 afterwards saw a number of pas sengers clinging to pieces of the wreck. My boat being full' of water, and having nothing to manage her with, it was impossible for me to render them any assistance, the safety of my boat and passengers requiring my whole attention. It is impossible for me to sn.fSwhat became of the other boats. On the 4th I picked up six turnips which 1 gave IQ the ladies to eat. I also picked up an awtiing-post, which I made a mast of, using my- shirt for a sail, and steering the boat with a {tiece of thwart, I shaped my course for the. vjestwurdi On Friday, the 51b, I had s fresh bfeeze from the eastward, tbej^oatgoingaloilg finely uuder saii. He remained tor about five minutes, when-he went forward and jumped overboard ’ again and was drowned. He was a member of the opera troupe. The Weather modera ting, the two remaining ladies and myself rigged the boat oat with a piece of one of their under-garments. We then made sail on the boat and steered to the westward. At daylight I found myself fat colored water, and steered to tbe weetwsrd, with tight breeze and hot ana, we all angering so terri bly lrom thirst and hanger. The ladies be came speechless. Their names were Miss Addie Norton and Mrs. Boee Howard, of New York. „. ■ Tuesday, 9th—a fresh breeze sprung up froqt the Eastward, with a heavy swell, ▲bout 2 P. M. I made the land and stood for it. About 45 P. M.,1 made* light but could not steer for it on account of baking no man ageable sail. About one hotfr after a shower came up; I caught some water with a piece of -their clothing and wrung it; into the mouths of tbe ladies, which so revived them that they could speak. As near as I' can jadge, about 10 P. M., I got inside of the outer breakers. After passing through.three breakers, sad thinking we were safe, tbe fourth breaker struck the boat, rolling her completely over and over, throwing ua ail three out. It being very dark, I could not see either of tbe ladies; . they were much exhausted, they must hare drowned imme diately. I swam to tbe shore, aod as soon as I got on the beach I looked for my beat and found her but a few feet irom me. 1 searched for the ladies but could not find thorn; I then strolled along the beach to find assistance and water. At 9:30 A. M., lOtti inst., I ar rived at May Port Mills, Fla., at the month of the St. Johns river, where I was kiudly relieved by Mr. A. B. Floyd, who rendered me ready assistance, as also did Hr. We beg leave to assure our correspondent that tbe statement was given by us precisely as cgi mnnicated by our informant, who had doifi less been misinformed himself as to tbe true character of tbe difficulty : Fexxandina, Florida, Octobuc-iO. 1866. Mb. Editob:—d clip tba following paragraph Dob tbe News and Herald of last Saturday: Apr»EHENBEl> Dimccj-TT ax Febnandisa.—We learn from a reliable source that a serious difficulty was apprehended at Fernandina on Wednesday last, in consequence of a threatened attempt by tbe Sheriff to eject several persona from houses which they had purchased lrom the Government about three years ago—tbe right of red eruption having expired. The owners contended first their property was exclusively their own, not recognizing the authority of the Sheriff iu the matter, and threatened resistance by force of arms to any effort on the put of the Sheriff to eyttt them. The military were ordered to hold themselves in readiness to prevent any breech pi' tbe peace, shall probably learn further in a fow days. Such a foul misrepresentation calls for correction, and I must ask your permission to do so. Tbe whole statement is incorrect, except that there was a diffi culty apprehended, but the disturbance was expected to have been made by Uwleae peraops resisting the Sheriff in the execution of his lawful authority. Youg statement of (he cause at difficulty is grossly incor rect. Tha Sheriff has no writs in bis possession ex cept in case* where tha owners have been allowed to redeem their property from the tax eaie by tbe U. S. direct tax commissioners, in every instance the par- ties redeeming being either minor children, women under disabilities, or loyU citizens. But notwith standing this redemption tha pnrebaaera at the “tax ■ale,*' persist in holding widows and orphans out oi possession of their property, and in order to do so incite the negroes to resist the Sheriff when ever he attempts to die possess them by virtue of lawful process issued out of our courts after a fair trial at tbe rights of parties. And I regret to say that this state of things la encouraged by the course adopted by the military authority in Florida, who threaten to arrest the Sheriff equally with the rioters, if any disturbance arises in consequence of bis at tempt to execute tha law. Hut is the sort of civil luio we have under tha President's proclamation. We are perfectly swan that tha grossest falsehoods have been invented rod diligently circulated both hare ftnd at Washington against our returning citi zens, who are leaking in a peaceful and fowfid man. ner to regain' pent seel on of their property oi which they have been uujastly and fraudulently deprived. Bat we hod a right to expect the editor of a paper liv ing so user us, end who has always appeared friendly disposed “towards our people,** should take some' - pains to ascertain the truth at a statement before pub lishing U. We ore living and suffering uuder the most grinding tyranny in ooaasquanse of these slan ders. In conclusion, allow me to caution you against items of local news from thin place. Xhe father of lies resides here in the persons of a handful of Radi cal army follower*, whose business is te plunder our people, end whose amusement u to Invent and circu late falsehoods shout them.
