TO OCR COUNTRY FRIENDS.
As much interest isfelt throughout the country in
regard to the prospects of the cotton and other crops
we will be gratefiil-to our planting friends find others
n the i nterior for information oa that snhiect. Those
who have opportunities for obtaining valuable infor
mation in regard to the growing crops, the working
of the free-labor system, and kindred matters, of gen
eral interest, will confer a favor by communicating
the same to us.
Pennsylvania Elections.—An intelligent
anti well-informed gentleman, of high posi-
iion, a citizen of the “Keystone State," in a
private letter addressed to the editor of the
Nuhliville Union and American, nnder date
of the Ilth, says:
“ Uenry's majority will be less than ten
thousand, and the Radicals will lose a large
amount of money. They bet largely on
15,000 and L’0,000 majority for Geary. This
is some consolation at least. The Radicals
carried the State last year by 22, ICQ, so that
we have gained at least 12,700 votes.
“What the resutt will he, (jndonly knows.
The Radical Congress at Us next session will
gress. Wc polled at the last election about
000,000 votes, and the result shows the par
ries are nearly equal, and if the Radicals
push things livexlremities they will suffer
for their temerity, all that a bitter war can
bring upon them."
The Lost Steamship Evening Stab j
Death Trap.—The New York correspond
ent of the Charleston Courier says the feeling
in thai city against the owners of the lost
steamship is that of intense indignation. - “It
was notorious,” says the writer, “that she
was unseaworthy; that a part of her Jiull
was rotten; that she was inefficiently manned,
and she was short of boats. Last January
t he passengers to New Orleans had an in
dignation meeting on board and denounced
the Company for their meanness in providing
for the comfort and safety of their customers.
Yet in Bpite of all this the Company con
tinued to run the death trap, and knowingly
hurled into the jaws of destruction the three
hundred human beings who went to.pieces
with the ship in the gale of last week. The
newspapers are urging th# relatives of the
victims to prosecute the Company for dam
ages. There is no question that there was
culpable neglect, and there is not a jury in
the land, but would grant the plaintiffs a
heavy verdict’’
Look out for Them.—The Macon papers
caution the police of the different towns and
cities to be on their guard for two horse
thieves who are loitering through the coun
try on foot, with a blanket or two, and a
tew clothes in a saddle bag. They appear
very rusty aud poor—sleeping in outbonges,.
and in negro kiicheus, and yet have large
amounts of money. They are both stout
men, one having a red head which he lately
dyed at Talbotton. A reward of $500 is out
for the red headed worthy, for the murder of
a man in Jones county. They bail from
South Carolina, and are a brace of danger
ous scamps.
The testimony in the Dudley case
lately in progress at Albany devetepes some
interesting features of high life, Dietz, the
colored agent of the deceased. Mjrs. Dudley,
was for twelve years her waiter and seivaot,
but since his promotion to be her commer
cial‘agent has had entire control of her dis
bursements, speculations, charities and funds
generally. It is alleged that he pensioned
his black relatives upon Mrs. Dudley aud
violently drove away some of her near and
dear relatives, notallowiag them to enter hot
house-
The Grand Juries of Hit* Superior Courts
of Richmond aud FulV jn counties have, in
their general presentments, recommended
the abolition of the Connty Courts. It is
evident thbt a strong pressure 'will be
brought to bear upon the Legislature for the
discontinuance of these Courts. The peo
ple are restive under the operation of all
processes for facilitating the forced collec
tion of debts, and strike wildly at this
Court because of its agency in such com
pulsion.
On the Way to Fort Delaware.—The
Philadelphia Ledger of the 13th instant says
that the four Anderson (South Carolina)
prisoners, the Messrs. Keyes, Senior and
Junior, Byrem and F. J. Stowers, convicted
at Charleston, South Carolina, of the murder
of Union soldiers, passed through Phila
delphia on Thursday, 11th instant, on their
way from the TortngaB to. Fort Delaware.
They were in charge of Capt. Crabb, 6th
United States Artillery. .
The Uksclikb Community at Columbia,
South Carolina.—The CaroKnft (South
Carolina) Phoenix, which started the rumor
that lias been going the rounds of the
papers, that the Ursolihc Community of that

crroneoMA statement. Only two

Gen. Toombs.—George Williams Kendall
of the New <3«4eitofcPlcay«ne, is a letter
from Pari?, says :

of our Soutbern peDple here :■ and as I bate
said about Sandere, all seem to be getting

aippi, Quintard, of Tennessee, and Wilmer,

When the War Ends.—Tbe Attorney-
General and Second Controller concur in the
opinion that tbe 20th of August, I860, the
date of the President’s proclamation de
claring the insurrection to he at an end,
should be taken as the dettbf the termina
tion of the war.
K the States that have alraady held dec-
tion. for nepceseotattvea to the next Con
gress, 58 Radicals and 12 Conservatives have
been elected. These are all T0^ hlrn
States. Arkansas bah Also heid her elec-
tion, and has chosen 3 Conservatives ; but
the prospect of their admission Is not bright

The tohypfc iatoamm us that representa
tive reform i» •* UI fee all-absorbing topic of
disenssMB tn Great Britain. The success of
the various reform demonstrations, which
have certainly advanced the cause which re-
formers|have at heart, seems to have filled the
public mind with something »IHi. to enthusi
asm. Mr. Bright, who is the leader of the
movement, has certainly achieved a great
deal in behalf of the industrial classes of his
countrymen. Whatever be the justice or injus
tice of his attacks on his political opponents,
he has spoken out for fee people manfully
and well.
The excitement occasioned by the Hyde
Park affair had not yet subsided, when de
monstrations of all bat unparalleled magni
tude, and occurring almost simultan
eously in different parts of the great city,
stirred London to the very centre. These
again were quickly followed by others smaller,
perhaps, but not less significant, in various
parts of the country. Never before, perhaps,
in tbe history of the world have such huge
assemblages of people taken place for tbe
purpose, not of potting forth often unjust,
always dangerous, though sometimes neces
sary hand of force, but of contributing the
weight of their moral *-*r towards the
settlement of a political question. That such
large meetings could be held in one of the
busiest and woe* populous, centres of Euro
pean industry without violence and blood
shed reftects the highest credit on the intel
ligence and self-possession of the masses of
whom they were composed. These demon
strations, besides, have substantially settled
the question of reform, and rendered it im
perative on whatever party may hold the
reins of power to introdnoe on the opening
f.Parliament a fresh reform bill.’ Great,
been the success of these
much as they have done in
ae of democratic principles,
.ly to be the last of their kind
which we shall have before the meeting
of Parliament. The people seem to be fully
awake upon the subject of their rights, and
the flame is certain to spread more aud rnoro.
A SAVANNAH WORK OF ART.
It is known to a few friends that Mr.
Gustio, the modest and gentlemanly operator
in tbe Savannah telegraphic office possesses
a natural talent for art, which despite hie in
cessant and laborious duties he has found
time to cultivate with remarkable success,
as is attested by the productions of his
pencil. But those who bane seen aud ad
mired his fugitive sketches, his brilliaut
landscapes, and life-like portraits—the work
of bis leisure, moments—will not be pre
pared h believe that he has found time to
produce, an original landscape painting on a
scaleand in a style of artistic excellence who
would do credit to Clenewarke or any other
of the professional landscape painters that
have visited our city in past years. We
refer to a most exquisite view of Bonaveu-
ture, twenty-four by twelve inches, painted
from original drawings by himself, and
giving to the beholder a most striking and
faithful impression of the singular beauties
of that remarkable sylvan scene, Clothed in its
gorgeous autumnal foliage. The pictun *
may be seen at the store of Messrs. Schreiner
A Co., and we think all who behold lb. will
agree with us that it is a work of rsos merit,
giving unmistakable evidence of artistic
talent of a high order, and. which, with
cultivation sod practice will place the
possessor high on thq roll of landscape
painters.
