MONDAY MORNING. OCTOBER M. 1M«.
Wlieie'. S«w»rd’« Bell 1
pour vara ago, when Lincoln ruled.
Our pais and tongues were alwuyeechooted
To write and speak with jealous care
or him. and all his blunders spare;
And those who did the rule forget
Were quickly sent to Lafayette
By one slight jerk iTom Seward’s bell.
Now Jihuson occupies the chair,
Ai.d has this sclf-atme Seward there,
While East and West, and North and South,
From every rabid traitor's mouth.
Curses and epithets are poured
Ppnn his head, and yet no chord
Keverborates to Seward's bell.
Now why is this t Pray tell us how
Kat treason then is virtue noict
Or why can traitors rave and swear,
And parsons lift their hand in prayer
To God to shorten “ Andy's." rule V
Is Seward doting like a fool ?
Or has ho lost his tinkling b'ell ?
Or docs he hesitate to act
And punish treason, from (he far I
That he would have to prison send
Moro than one life-long bosom friend?
(f not, pray who can understand
Why treason’s rampant through the land ?
Answer who can, " Where’s Seward's hell?"
