.aic^t stores in Savannah.
,ag on we find the dry goods store of N. K.

i the jewelry and fancy store of Mr. F.
And the
■fc ilen have the niilinery establishment of Madame
do: than which there is none finer. Her stock
; been lately replenished, and from the number of
soil-ts m the store we should judge the stock was
itly opposite the Catholic Church. It
•qitare bounded by Drayton, Perry, and
McDonough streets, and fronting on Chippewa square.
A high brick wall encloses the Museum, which is one
story high, and erected in the northwest corner of the
enclosure. The grounds are not as yet finished, but
AAro laid out well, and when completed will present an
attractive appearauce. We were kindly shown through
the grounds by Mr. Moves on Saturday, and were
much astonished to find such a collection in onr midst,
and comparatively unknown. He has some of the
rarest animals and birds to be found anywhere, and
understand it is his intention to constantly add to
the museum, with a view to make it an institution of
the State.
A large white crane was the first bird that attracted
onr attention and is certainly a fine specimen of his
species. On the entrance to the museum building, the
first object is the large cage which contains the differ-
ent birds. There will be found the Java Sparrow
African Finch and many birds from Europe, as well
as specimens of nearly all the species of Georgia, Flo
rida and the Carolinas.
The cage containing the “ Happy Family” is a curl,
osity. In it will be found monkeys of all kinds, foxea,
coons and cats. They appear to be perfectly contented
and well taken care of.
His collection of live rattlesnakes is very fine; one
very venemous fellow is at lea9t twenty years old, and
looks at visitors as though he would like to become
more intimate.
There are also several of the rarest parrots to ba
found; one from Australia, a very fine bird, and one
also from New Zealand. He has, also, several of the
ferior species.
There are specimens of wild cats, Mexican pheasants
and many other animals and birds which we have not*
space to ennmerate. 1 His collection of stuffed birds is
also very fine, and when completed, the nmsauxn will
afford a fine study for those who take pleasure in such
things, He will also have a cabinet containing some
of the finest specimens of the mineral kingdom to be
found tn the Southern country, including gold, cop
per, Ac., from all our Southern States, particularly
Georgia and North Carolina.
On Wednesday of this week it will be thrown open
to the public at the small entrance fee of twenty-five
cents, which is charged more for the purpose of keep
ing away a large crowd than to make money. We
trust that the effortB of the proprietor will be properly
appreciated and encouraged.
Distinguished Arrival.—It gives us pleasure to
announce that the celebrated oculist and optician
Prof. M. Bernhardt, of Berlin, Prussia, and late of
New York, arrived in our city a few days ago, and in
tends to remain with us a short time. From the
handsome testimonials which he received from the
medical faculty and clergy, not only of Savannah, but
every other city that he paid a visit to, as also from
•many of the most prominent statesmen in the Union,
infer that he is an adept in his profession, and
therefore advise all in need of artificial aid to their
sight to call on Professor Bernhardt and procure a
pair of his excellent Australian crystal spectacles,
which are pronounced superior to any others in use.
Professor Bernhardt opens his office at the Pulaski
House, Tuesday morning, where he can be consulted
from 9 A. M. till 5 P. M. See Professor Bernhardt’s
card in another column.

The Metropolitan Fire Company—We under
stand that at an election held last week Colonel F. J.
Waring was elected tc fill the vacancy ia the office of
President created by the resignation of Mr. James
Stewart. The following officers were ro-elccted for the
various offices—W. E. Gue, 1st Vice-President ; Thos <
F. Butler, 2d Vice-President; F. R. Sweat, Secretary
and J. M. Berrien, Treasurer.,
We understand that the company will leave the city
on Thursday evening to participate in the parade of
the Augusta Fire Department on Friday, 2d proximo.
They will take about fifty members. The company
will hold a mating on Tuesday night, at their engine
room, to make final arrangements, when all intending
to participate are invited to bo present.
The O. M. Petit.—This steamer which has been
undergoing extensive repairs in Baltimore reached
this port on Saturday. She has been thoroughly
overhauled, and may almost be considered a new
boat. She is now commanded by Captain Shaw, and
is intended by Captain Dickerson, her present owner,
for towing in the Savannah river.
Washington, Oct. 28.—The Secretary of 8tate has
addressed a letter to Sir Frederick Bruce in behalf of
James Lynch and John McMahon, recently -convicted
by the colonial Coart of Canada, and sentenced to
death upon a charge that, being citizens of the United
States, they were actors in the assault made in the
month of Jane last at Fort Erie, in that colony. The
Secretary says the United States consul at Toronto has
been instructed to procure, for the information of the
Government, a copy of the record of the trial and con
viction of Lynch and McMahon, and also of all further
trials md convictions of a similar character which
shall take place in Canada.
The Secretary says: “The President directs me to
assure yon of his confident hope that Her Majesty’s
Government will not only cheerfully comply with the
request thus made, but that they will think it proper
also to examine the judicial proceedings aforesaid with
a careful regard to the rights of the United States and
to the maintenance of good relations between the two
countries. For this reason it will be very gratifying
to the President if you should be able to give me an
assurance that the execution of the sentences pro
nounced upon the convicted persons will be suspended
if occasion for delay shall arise in the manner before
mentioned to make it desirable. It is the opinion of
the Government that sound policy coincides with the
best impulses of a benevolent nature, in recom-
mending tenderness, amnesty, and forgiveness in
such cases.”
The New York Herald’s Toronto special dispatch
says dispatches ara coming from all parts of the pro
vinces demanding that no mercy be shown the con
victed Fenians. It is doubtful if the Crown can find
evidence strong enough to convict Rev. Mr. Lnmsden.
The threats made by New York Fenians to avenge the
death of those convicted are doing great injury to th&
prisoners. Petitions are to be circulated and sent to
the Governor General to forward to the Home Govern
ment to have the sentences. commuted to imprison
ment David Whaler, Partick Norton and David Drum
mond have been arraigned, and fears are expressed
that the prisoners may escape. There are in the city
oyer five hundred unemployed Irish and Americans.
The Fenian prisoners at Cornwa'l are to bo indicted
on Monday for high treason, the trial following on
Wednesday.

Important from Washington—The
French to Evacuate Mexico and the
Juarez Government to be Supported
by the United States—The Demand on
England.
[Special dispatch to the Baltimore Son.]
Washington, Oct. 23.—The instructions to Hon. L.
D Campbell, Minister to Mexico, were prepared on
Saturday last, but owing to his non-arrival, were not
delivered to him until to-day. It is doubtful, how
ever, whether private affairs will not prevent hit im
mediate departure. He has asked leave of the Presi
dent to remain long enough to fix up his affairs, but
the President replied that the urgency of the case ad
mitted of no delay, and that if he cannot leave at
once, another Minister rahst be appointed in his stead.
Should he-decline going, another appointment will be
made to-morrow. . _
The French Government ask for an extension of
the time for the withdrawal of the first instalment of
its, troops till January Is! ottering in that case to
waive the time allowed for the withdrawal of the bal
ance of its troops, and remove all the troops substan
tially atone time. The proposition has not been as
sented to, but it is insisted that it shall commence at
once and proceed as rapidly as possible. It is hoped
that the whole body of troops will he withdrawn
within three mouths. In view of the anarchy preva
lent in Mexico, our Government will be prepared to
protect the Juarez Gavernment and finally establish
it. In consideration of this, Lower California and
the northern part of Sinola and chihuahua are tobe
ceded to the United States. No arrangement baa been
made bv our Government to guarantee French clalma
againat Mexico, but, should it appear expedient, U will
not hesitate to do so. The enforcement of the Mon
roe doctrine and the establishment of a stable Repub
lican Government in Mexico are considered of para
mount importance. The matter has been f«Uy dis
cussed in the Cabinet, and unanimously agreed upon.
Some time since, instractio were sent to apmater
Adams to make a peremptory demand for indemnity
for the losses sustained by our merchant marine from
too depredations of toe ret?l privateere. An evasive
reply was returned to this by toe British government.
He was instructed to repeat (toe demand and did so.
but tot this no definite reply has yet beenreceived.but
the tone of the British press and tn* feeling show that
they are willing to submit the matter to arbitration,
or to a board of national commissioners. This will
not be assentod to, but prompt and lull payment in-
sisted upon.
The Up-Shot.—Four millions of negroes, torn from
their normal condition, have been transtonned mb,
paupers, and the Northern laboring classes aremort-
Leed for four thousand millions of ®? one y ““S'
pUsh this stupendous deviltry. Or in
the producing forces of the North are loaded down
withadebtof four thousand millions to destroy the
producing forces of toe South1 Since thie worid be
gan, is there any approach to this ruin . And yet toe
madmen wish to go on, and will go on «nd-martjo
on, until the negro is not only a pauper but a voter
thus every Northern laborer must give a certain por
tion of each day’s labor, not only to support the negro
pauper, but to make him his equal in the Government!
Remedy for Chills.—A schoolmaster near Dawson,
Georgia, by the name of Aldehoff, announces through
the aolurons of a local paper his discovery of a'sover-
eign remedy for chills aud fever. We reproduce his
prescription for the information of the medical pro
fession of Atlanta. . „
For an adult take a tahlespoonful of prepared chalk,-
nut It in a little less than a palf-tnmbler of good vine
gar and drink while it effervesces. Take one snob
dose the evening before toe day yon expect a return
of the chill, and another uext day about two hours
before the expected attack.

Macon Cotton Market.
Macon, Oct. 26,1866.
Cotton.—The market opened this morning with a
good demand for New York Middlings, at 31 cts. This
inquiry continued through the day, though there was
but little cotton offering, the sales being confined to
small lots, on planter*' aocount, to realize a little
ready money for pressing wants. Thore is a growing
disposition on the part of planters to store thoir cotton
for better prices.
