And the woodbine wanders over all; There la the ebeded doorway still, • But a stranger's foot has creased the sill. There Is the barn—and still as of yore I can smell the hay from the open door, And see the bnsy swallows throng. And hear tne peewee's mournful song; Bui the stranger cornea—oh, painful proof— Bli aheaves are piled to the heated rant There la the orchard—the very trees, Where my childhood knew long hours of ease, And watchM the shadosry momenta ran. Till my life had imbibed more ahede than inn. The swing from the bough now aweeplng the air. But the stranger* children ere awiugmg there. There bubbles the ahedy Bpring below. With its bulrush brook where the hssels grow; 'Twss there I found the ealamus root. And watched the minnows poise end shoot. And saw the robin lare his wing— Bat ttai stranger’s bneket is it the spring. Oh 1 ye who daily cross tile sill. Step lightly, for I love it stfli; And when you crowd tho old barn eaves. Then think what countless harvest aheaves Have passed within the scented door To gladden eyes that are no more. Deal kindly with those orchard trees. And when your children crowd your knees, Their sweetest fruits shall they impart. As (fold memories stirred their heart-. To youthful sports still leave the awing.
