As much interest is felt throughout the country in regard to the prospects of the cotton end other crops we will be grateful to our planting friends and others u the interior for information on that subject. Those who have opportunities for obtaining valuable infor mation in regard to the - growing crops, the working of the free-labor system, and kindred matters, of gen eral interest, will confer a favor by communicating the same to us. The Western and Atlantic Railroad Through the kindness ol our attentive cor respondent at Miiledgeville, we are in pos session of a copy of the annual report of the officers of the above road to Governor Jenkins, for the fiscal year ending September 30th, 1866. Not having the space at our command to publish the report in full, we must content ourselves with a brief state ment of some of its most important features. The Superintendent, Mr. Wallace, says fiat, in consequence of the exciting and troublous times through which the country has been passing, and the deep interest the people in every portiou of the State have in this road as a source of revenue, aud the necessarily small amount oi satisfactory in formation it has been possible to furnish them since the close of the war, be has takeD unusual pains to have made up from each department the fullest possible details in re gard to its present condition. It gives us pleasure to state that the difficult task has been performed in a most excellent and sat isfactory manner. It appears that when the road was return ed to the possession of the State agents by the military authority of the United States, that portion ot the track between Chattanoo ga aud the crossing of the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad—a distance of eighty miles—was entirely destroyed. The track between the Junction and Dalton was in very good condition, both as regards iron and cross-ties, and only needed such repairs as are incident to a good track. Between Dalton and Resaca—a distance of fitteen miles—the track was laid on the original eross-ties with worn rails and was not safe for the passage of trains over it. From Resaca to Etowah the original track remain ed, but the passage of so many heavy trains over it, with but slight repairs, had placed it in very unsafe condition. From Etowah to At!ante the track had been relaid with burnt tails and with very inferior cross-ties. It is stated that twenty-three miles of new iron has been laid since the 1st of April, and that portion of the track between Atlanta and Dalton has been relald with such rails select ed from the old iron as were in good condi tion ; which has made the track as safe for the passage of trains over it as it had been at any previous time. There has been received a considerable quantity of new iron, which is now distributed on the line of road, and will be put on the track in the course of a few weeks. The entire expenditures of the road, for all and every purpose, that has been paid out for the fiscal year just ended, amounts to the sum of S 104,827 69 over aud above the en - tire gross oaruiugs for the same period. The total amount of indebtedness on the 1st of September laBt was 8341,047 54, agains' which the road bolds assets to the amount of 3241,219 85. Thus it will be seen that tbe actual indebtedness of the State on account of the road for the year just ended amounts to the sum of 899,827 69; and this amount, it is alleged, would be reduced to less than $70,000, if the Treasury of tbe State, instead of that of the road, was charged with the transportation of more than six hundred car loads of corn and other supplies for the destitute people of the State, and. for which the road has no credit in its receipts. With regard to the financial wants of the road in future, to put it and its gppur*' nances, such as bridges, locomativ*' J ~ station houses, in a thoroughly ** •*, and dition, two hundred and iff -.eetive con- lars will be required, rr ' j thousand dol- Wallace, as weti »uese sums, says Mr- ceived from ti*' .» the funds already re- penaaner* .o State, are not needed as a is »»’ ...but as a temporary loan. The fact ' .mtained, also, that since the present officers were placed by Gov. Jenkins in pos session of the affairs of the Road, the large sum ot upwards of one million six hundred thousand dollars of money has been paid into and out of the State road Treasury. .Touching the future railroad policy of the State, Mr. Wallace presents the following in teresting views: “I am not one of those who believe _ many new railroads will be constructed in the South at an early day. We have not the means, and if we had, the good judgment ot discreet money holders will point out to them better investments in the reconstruction of present lines, and in adding to our agricul tural and manufacturing interests. We have facilities for transportation already beyond the legitimate products and commerce of the country.’’ , . . T _ “In taking this view of the subject, I am not unmindful of the fact, that the welfare of certain section# of the South seem* to re quire and demand the completion of some roads, commenced before tbe war, and in which large investments have already been made ; these no doubt will be finished, tsd, admitting that all others now being discussed and projected, are constructed in due time, they cannot injuriously affect the welfare of the State Road. A rapid exchange of four millions of a now idle and unproductive race of laborers, for hot less than double that number of the restless Celtic and Anglo Saxon is inevitable, and will throw upon the rails of the Western and Atlantic Railroad a travel and a traffic that the most sanguine never anticipated; and no matter what roads may be constructed, it must continue to be, between the South and the great Northwest, lite the MfMWfnruhMt binds the Siamese twins: CtSSSt iii the certainty of this future for the State Road, I can see how easily the State may relieve herself at once of ail concern for tbe payment ot her indebt edness.” Ciicsit Court. We are informed by United Slat* Marshal Dickson that a session of the United States Circuit Court, for the fifth circuit, will be held here by Ufa Honor, Judge Brakine, at the United Status Uourt rodms. commencing on Thursday next, the 8th instant. This will be the first session of this Court here since I860. ■fisvSSff. . The whole hcrpnlace, according to accounts, was agitatm with cries of ven geance upon the unhappy priaoners, or ap peals for mercy, lest a war ensue between Canada and the United States. The tele graph informs us that since the request of President'Johnson, addressed to the British Minister at Washington, that mercy and for bearance be shown to the condemned Fe nians, a decided change has taken piece in the temper of the Canadian press and people. We think- this very fortunate for that coun try; for should the Canadian Government proceed to extremities, and execute any of the prisoners, there is but little doubt their fate would be fearfully avenged by their friends on this side of the line. Large in dignation meetings have been held in dif ferent parts of tins country, and both men, money and arms will be forthcoming, if. the necessity should arise, to cany the war into Canada. Colonel Roberta has heea advised to call out one hundred thousand men. Im mediately, for the double purpose of rescuing the prisoners and aaptving Canada. The Fenian journals state, in the moat positive manner, that one at the convicted prisoners, Colonel Lynch, never held any commission in the Fenian army, ’and that he did not ac company the expedition into Canada in any such capacity; that he went in the character of a correspondent of a New York paper, and that he has been confounded by the Ca nadian authorities with Gen. Lynch, of Illi nois, who commanded the expedition against Fort Erie.
