TO OUR COUNTRY P’UE*IJS.
As much interest is felt throughout the country in
regard to the prospects ol'the cotton and other crops
we will ho grateful to our planting friends and others
u the interior for information on that subject. Those
who have opportunities for obtaining Valuable infor
mation in regard to the growing crops, the working
of the free-labor system, and kindred matters, of gen
eral interest, will confer a favor by communicating
the same to ns. •'
Result of the Elections.
Our Northern exchanges sum up the result
of the electious on the Oth inst., whicUfihowa
that the Congressional delegation in the For
tieth Congress will'be about the same in par
ty strength as it is in the pre^pt Congress.
In Maryland the Radicals lose two Con
gressmen, but they gain two in New Jersey.
The New York delegation is about the same
as in the present Congress, and Delaware re
main's the same. In Missouri there is a Re
publican gain of one Congressman, and iu
the Slates of Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan
Wisconsin and Nevada, according to the re
turns received, the position of affairs seems
to be unchanged siuce 18C4, all tending lo
the conclusion that on the Gth Inst, there
were elected about sixty-nine or seventy Re
publicans in tbc House of Representatives to
twenty or twenty one Democrats. With the
members already elected, and those yet to
he chosen in Connecticut, California, Ken
tucky, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and
Tennessee, it seems to be established that iu
the next House the Republicans will have
more than two-thirds of the members, while
in the Sfenate there will he an increase of
Republican strength. A Conservative will
come in place of Senator Crcswell, of Mary
land, but Utere will be au offset to that iu
the election of a Republicau in New Jersey.
Illinois will electa Republican Senator, Kan
sas will choose two, and Missouri, New York,
Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin will
each elect one. The next Senate will, there
fore, stand about fortv-tour Republicans to
eight Democrats—more than a three-fourths
majority for the former party. The Repub
lican majorities in the States which voted on
the full are estimated at about 232,000, ma
king, with the result of the October elections,
at least 432,000 majority in the Northern
States in favor of the dominant parly.
The result in the Western States is as sur
prising as it was unexpected, and shows that
the people of these States are thoroughly im
bued with the rancorous spirit of Radicalism.
Some of the bitterest persecutors of the
South have been elected to Congress, pledged
to the most extreme measures against this
section, against the Union, and against the
Constitution. We cannot deny that we feel
somewhat depressed by the results ol these
elections, for the reason that they indicaie a
determination on the part of the dominant
party to perpetuate the agitation of extreme
measures which, il adopted, must.oveithrow
our present form of Government, to be suc
ceeded by a despotism, ttie bare contempla
tion of which sickens the heart of the true
patriot. Yet the South should not despair.
We know that, situated as she is at present,
she is hound hand and foot, politically and
commercially ; but in the nature of thing.-,
if she be but true to herself, that condition
cannot last. The present must be endured ;
but there are emancipation and equality ol
privileges looming up in the distance, as the
fruits of the development of her own manu
facturing system, the creation of a Southern
shipping interest, the fostering of the me
chanical arts by encouraging emigration, the
establishment of direct trade with foreign
uations, the establishment of her own bro
kerage and commission business, the encou
ragement of a wholesome literature, and of
all the other elements which go to constitute
substantial independence, and enable a great
people lo'live upou their own resdbrees, and
not simply upon the forbearance of their ene
mies.
Our City.
Up to the commencement of last week bu
siness had been discouragiogly dull, and
matters generally had not presented a very
hopeful and lively appearance. This was
owing in a measure to the extreme scarcity
of money and the Comparatively small
amouut of Cotton received. During the Iasi
aud present week, however, there has been
a change for the better. Our streets are now
being crowded with cotton and wagons, but
owing to the downward tendency in the mar
ket prices of the staple, arid the desire of
planters lo realize a higher price, most of the
cotton is being stored in our commodious
warehouses. We notice that this is the case
in all of our neighboring cities. It is now
pretty well ascertained that the heavy rains
and frost have cut short the crop fully ont-
third, if not more. We believe this will apply
to all the cotton region tributary to this city.
It may, therefore, be expected that the re
ceipts will commence falling off iu the early
part of the season, and higher prices must
actually rule.
The fall stocks of goods have been reduced^
by the demands of the country trade, but our
merchants are replenishing rapidiy, and are
offering superior inducements to jobbers in
every description of merchandize. Supplies
are sold as cheap, if not cheaper, in this city,
and cotton commands as high a price here,
and in many instances higher, than in any ol
our sister cities. With the anticipated reac
tion in the cotton market, and the rapidly in
creasing receipts as the result of the fine
weather for picking, it is believed that bnsi
ness will .continue ;to Tevive, and remove
partially at least the embarrassing stringency
in financial affairs.
Trial Or Jno. C. Bkainb.—JohnC. Braioe,
of the late Confederate Navy, was arraigned
on Thursday last before the United States
Circuit Court in New York, on the charge of
murder and piracy on the high seas, found
against him in the indictment, with the par
ticulars of which the public are familiar. In
reply to the usual question Braioe pleaded
not guilty. He was remanded to jail. The
trial will take place before Judge Benedict
on the 16th;inst. ,
Consecration of Bishop, of Louisiana.—A
dispatch of the Tth instant says that the Right
Rey. J. P. Wilmer was that day consecrated
as Bishop of Louisiana, by Bishop Hopkins,
of Vcrmout, in Christ Church. Bishop Hop
kins, as presiding bishop, was assisted by
Bishops Green of Mississippi, Wilmer of
Alabama, and Quinlard of Tennessee. The
BiBtaop of Georgia being absent, the sermon
was preached by BUhop Hopkins.

The Theatrical Rum.
The theatrical season which is about open
ing in this city under the auspices of Col.
Grantham I. Taggart, promises to be one of
the mou successful that £avannah has ever
enjoyed- The opening of the business sea-
sou, and the influx of strangers, creates the
condition of society necessary to a liberal &Dd
extensive patronage of first class amuse
ments ; Ad Col. Taggart in providing a star
stock company, under the superintendence
of an experienced and competent manager,
with such histrionic celebrities as Miss May-
hew, Miss Mason, and Messrs. Harry Lang-
don, Wood Benson, Harry Everett and
others, who will develop to the fullest exteDt
the tendency of the public mind here
for such agreeable and interesting en
tertainments. Tragedy aud comedy ap
peal to the sympathies and risibilities of the
public, and we feel assured those who appre
ciate excellent theatrical performances will
find something to suit their peculiar likings,
from the fact that every effort has been made
to cater successfully for the public enjoy
ment. The announcement, therefore, that
our theatre will be re-opened on the l'.Hh
inst., with stars of the first magnitude in the
theatrical firmament, will be welcome news
to the people of Savannah, who will accord
to it a liberal, patronage. The character of
the anticipated performances thus hastily
glanced at, and (be degree lo which they are
patronized by onr citizens, shows that while
second-rate entertainments will not be sus
tained, no such effort as Col. Taggart’s can
fail to command success.
This movement in behalf of the drama in
this city .is entitled erpecially to the friendly
countenance and active support of the busi
ness community, for the patent reason that it
is an attraction for hundreds in the country
who prefer to visit other citiesf wheat amuse
ments ot Ibis character are in successtul
operation.

FROM WASHINGTON.
Pardons Granted bjr the President—In*
tervlew between Mississippi Conanals.
eloners nnd the President In Regard ta
Mr. Davis.
Washington. Not. It.—Within the test few daysthe
President has directed pardons to be issued to the
following named persons, one of which sought pardon
under the first exception of the amnesty proctanpi
and having held s petty office under the pretended
Confederacy, was remanded. Applied and pardoned
under the $20,000 clause are Willia Bonham, of Georgia;
William A. Pegram, of Luuiaiana; D. H. Reynolds, of
Arkansas; J. D. Eppfs, Of Uiaatsaippi; and M. A.
Henderson, Wm. Jones, and John M. Brown, of Ten-
nessee.
Messrs. Hillyer and Lowry called upon the Presi
dent to-day by appointment, having previously sent
to him the Mississippi Legislature resolutions In re
lation to Jefferson Davis. They also presented an ac
companying letter from Governor Humphrey, baaed
on the Idea that there will he no trial; hut he says
while they do not seek to screen him too* this, they
believe that his imprisonment Is not necessary to
cure his presence when desired for the trial, and can
only be mended with fstal results to hts health, and
that the ends of justice will be reached by admitting
him to bail or parole. The President gave them a
courteous reception and promised to take the subject
into consideration.

Tbe Evening Star Disaster.
Our readers are aware that an official in
vestigation was ordered by the Treasury De
partment into the causes that led to tbe ter
rible loss of the steamship Evening Star. The
investigation lias just been completed and
the report submitted to the Secretary
ihe Treasury. It appears from the testimony
that she was a strong ship, that the engines
were good, and that ahe was well equipped,
but that her crew were deficient in strength,
numbering only tbirty-lour officers and men.
The final sinking of the vessel, according to
the evidence, was caused by heavy seas forc
ing the forward gangway, pouring great
volumes of water into the engine room, which
it was impossible to' relieve the ship of be
cause there waB no ship’s carpenter or appa
ratus for that purpose.
The recapitulation of the testimony goes
to show that the principal cause of tho dis
aster was an error of judgment on the part
of the Captain, who, although a skillful mari
ner, failed to avoid tbe rnaiu force of the
storm by changing his course, as admonished
by its premonitions. He unfortunately kept
on in bis direct course, encountering the full
force of tbe storm in the evening. When iu
tbe trongh of tbe sea, tbe Captain could do
nothing, it is stated, because tbe ship was so
short-handed, and, strange to say, without a
carpenter to repairdamagesasthey occurred.
The Southern Methodists.—The anuuul
conference of the Methodist Protestant
Church of Virginia was held at Lynchburg
last week, and resolved: “That our general
conference, having referred the commission
ers of the Methodist Episcopal Church South

action of our general convention to meet iu
Montgomery, Alabama, in May next, . we
recommend our delegates to that body to be
instructed to use their influence to have cor
responding commissioners appointed on
our part, to meet and confer with those of
the Methodist Episcopal Church South
upon this subject, and to facilitate the con
templated union of trie two churches upon
such terms and principles as shall not com
promise the integrity of the Methodist Pro
testant Church, and shall be satisfactory and
honorable to both churches, and to have
, their eutire proceedings ia tbe case referred
to our annual conferences for ratificaliou or
otherwise.”
