The Dailv News and Herald. SATURDAY MORNING. NOVEMBHB1V* Dead. [Lines to the memory of William Johnson Pegbax, •who fell in one of the last and moet obstinately con tested battles of the war. He was only twenty-one years of age and yet had attained to the rank of Brig adier General. General Lee. in speaking of him to a lady of Richmond, said he was a “ model Christian, soldier and gentleman.”] Leave me to my speechless sorrow. Leave me to my palid glooiu, Shut away the mocking sunlight. Take its burden from the room. What arc words but empty rattle ? Words that murmur of relief. In the deadly single-handed struggle with the monster grief. Can I reason down my anguish ? Can I take my pain away? Let the door be closed betwixt us. Let me meet it as I may. Dead! poor lips repeat, repeat it; Wrench from out that word of dread. All the sharpest stings of memory Wrapped within it. He is dead! Dead! my Willie in his beauty, ’Ere the morning flush of.joy. Yet had caught the chastening shadow, Manhood flings around the boy. Dead! my loving, gentle hearted, Noblest 1 “ Bravest of the brave,” Fallen ’midst the rush of b?ttle, Buried in a nameless grave. • He whose look and tone grew tender, At a dear one’s faintest moan. * All unwatched, uuwept, unheeded, He to perish thus alone. Who can tell me of his longings— If he named his mother’s name? If lie softly murmured " sister,” When the ghastly struggle came? If a consecrating calmness Slept u\>on his clay cold brow? None can tell me 1 these are secrets God hath in his keeping now. All love’s sweetest ministrations, All its needs for him are o’er; Never will he cross the threshold Of the old familiar door. Never will his ringing laughter. Echo joyous through the hall; m Never will I answer gaily To his fond caressing call. Never press his smooth, white forehead, Never stroke his shining hair, Never feel his arm about me, Never greet his smile so rafe. Ever miss the matchless kindness, Through every word he said, Ever wait the blauk of absence. Ever mourn my darling dead. Dea 1! Oh, grief has drowned my vision, Blotted all the gladness o’er, Made mo half forget he liveth. As he never lived before. That he was not all so lonely, Tiio’ no loved one closed his eye. That the blessed Christ sustained him, When he laid him down to die. That his tender, yearning spirit Drinks its fill of sacred joy, That the cloudless bliss of heaven Overflows the precious boy. This can still the inward aching; This can calm the moaning wild, 'Tis at most a dreary absence Only—I am reconciled. Commission Merchants. das.T. Executive Department, Milledgeville, 12th Nov., 1866. r IE General Assembly of the State of Georgia, now in session, have as their first complete act of legis lation, unanimously resolved as follows : Whereas, It behooves all men to acknowledge their dependence upon the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, to be mindful of His providences, to return thanks for His mercies and blessings, to confess their sins, and to importune His favor. Therefore, Rbsolved, by the General Assembly of the State of Georgia, That His Excellency the Governor issue his Proclamation, setting apart Thursday, the 22d inst., ns a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer, request ing the same to bo so observed by the people of this State. Now, therefore, I, Charles J. Jenkins, Governor ol said State, by this my proclamation, call upon the whole People of Georgia, male and female, old and young, clergy Und laity, to give earnest heed to this solemn invocation of their Law-Givers. On the day appointed, let the ordinary avocations of lire be suspended—let places of business andot plean- <ure be closed—let the temples of the living God be opened—let all the peoplo surround the altars where they are wont to worship, and let the priests lead their hearts aud minds iu pious humiliation, repent- nuce, thanksgiving and supplication. There is cause for all. Ceremonious observances deceive man, but ••God is not mocked.” Let there be heart and soul in the sendees of the day. Let the poor and the des titute be remembered in our prayers—and in the year following, let him that hath prove his sincerity by the largeness of his alms. For sinning, not against Pharoah, but against GOD, Israel of old, wandered forty years in the Wilderness, la the Wilderness we are now, Feliow-citizeus. Our Corn aud our Oil have failed of their abundance—-our flocus and our herds are diminished. The cry of want is heard m our land—the manna and the quails come not vet. But the throne of God is a Mebcy-SeaT. If sought aright, Hj£ will grant us deliverance and plenty. CHARLES J. JENKINS. uovl l-21 Governor of Georgia. STOMACH BITTERS: .A }l\ a '.A For the Information and guidance of all who regard .HEALTH As the GREATEST OF TEMPORAL BLESSINGS, the demand for this potent and agreeable Vegeta ble TONIC and ALTERATIVE has been immensely Increased. Not only In this country, bnt In all other lands to which commerce bean oar dag, the peculiar merit* of the article are known and appreciated. It baa been found salted to all climates, all localities, and the needs of every class of society. Compounded • the purest vegetable Ingredients, unalloyed with any mineral salt or corrosive vegetable alkaloid, and com bining the properties of a WHOLESOME STO MACHIC, a GENTLE LAXATIVE, and aaefflclent ANTI-BILIOUS AGENT, It Is endorsed by practlca Chemists as the safest, and by unprejudiced phyri- ciaus as the sorest Preventative, Regnlatlag and Restorative Preparation of the age. The nature of lta components la the guarantee ol U harmlessness. It consists of the stimulating prin ciple of sound Rye, meoicated with the finest tonic, anti-febrile, aperient, antiscorbutic, and anti-spsa- modlc herbs, roots and barks that botanical research has yet developed forllie nse of man. Every vegeta ble substance that enters into Its composition Is culled and selected with scrupulous' care, and no- thing that is not sound and perfect of Its kind is used n its manufacture. In the factory at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a aya- tem of inspection far more thorough than that adopted by Government authority, as a tost of the quality of the great staples of life, la rigorously prac tised. Every barrel or the cereal stimulant which forms the basis or the Bitters is ascertained to be ab solutely pure before it Is received into the inarm fat turing department, and every leaf and fibre of the medicating ingredients scrutinized before the proces of infusion commences. Such is the enormous ca pacity of the tanks in which the Bitters are prepareu i hat the proprietors are enabled to keep a large stock on hand, aud to supply the domestic and fure’gu market with an article matured and mellowed by time. Hence the fiery and biting davor which at taches to ordinary bitters, and which is due to their newness aud the interior quality of the drugs and alcohol of which they are concocted, is never per- reived in this mild and agreeable preparation. Ac cording to the testimony of able chemists, the es seaceof good Rye is the most healthful of all spirits, aud HostetterV STOMACH BITTERS Are the only Medicinal Tonic in the World of which that doid is the stimulating Ingredient. To Dyspeptic Sufferers. Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed all the varieties qf indigestion. Its symptoms are so various, and differ so much in different individuals i hat it is almost impossible to classify them. In fact, some of them arc utterly indescribable. It may be safely asserted, however, that half the dlseuses ol mankind spring from a disordered condition of the stomach; and that the other half, whatever their origin, react upon that sensitive and important or gan. Amoog the ordinary Indications of Dys. epsia are flatulence, a bloated and full feeling about the stomach and abdomen immediately after eating, a gnawing sensation or a sense of hollowness at the pit of the stomach between meals, a heavy dull tcel- ing in tlie head, feeble or unsteady appetite, occa sional nausea, restlessness daring 11 ht and a weary, unrefreshed feeling on rising in til- . ornlng, palplta tion of the heart, depression ' ind, sometimes amounting to monomania, toa= u.omory, confu sion of thought, sour stomach, with laislng of food, and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness of eye, pain in the diaphragm, feebleness and disincli nation for exertion, and sometimes emaciation and a corpse-like pallor. These are a few of the direct signs of Dyspepsia, but as it is generally complicated with specific affections of the bowels, the liver and the ■ erves, its victims have many additional torments which are technically attributed to oilier causes. The best a.ivice that can be given to any one who has the slightest predisposition to Dyspepsia, is to for tify his or her digestive organs bv the dally nse of Hosteller’s Bitters. The li..iea.se proceeds from a lack of vigor In the stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tone ind renovate that organ. If the gastric-apparatus is in good working order, and can perfectly dissolve and thoroughly assimilate the food submitted to It* operation, there will be no Dyspepsia. If it cannot do tills, it requires reinforcement, and the best of all reinforcing agents should be forthwith resorted to. The stomach is the commissariat of the system. It upplieB the elements of life to the whole body. In is prepared the material of blood, muscle, bone ind fibre, and if it fails to purvey that material in quantity, and of a proper kind,tbe-whole-body suf- ,ers, and with it the mental faculty:, tyiereforq pro tect the commissariat department. It is a great fallacy to suppose that the nauseous ness of a medicine is any proof of Its value aa a torative. The truth Is, that if tbe palate revolts against a remedy, it cannot do much good. HOSTETTER’S BITTERS Are opt unpleasant to the taste, and always soothe and quiet, instead of irritating the stomach. Indeed they are tbe. best known preventative of and cere for nausea. Their useftIncus as* family specific can scarcely be overrated.
