R Washington, postmaster of Ma con, which occurred at bis residence in that city at an early hour on Wednesday morniug. after a brief illness. He was at his office cn Monday, attending to bis business as usual, hut got wet during the day and took a chili after returning to his home. That it shall be the duty of the Chief Engi neer to take command at all firea, sod he shall have full power over and disposition of the several Com panies at such firm, and their engines and apparatus; and in hie absence, the First Assistant Engineer shall assume such command, and in case of the atifino of both t*ie Chief Engineer and the First Assistant Engi neer, then tbe Second Amiataut Engineer as sume such command, and in cam of the absence of all three ol Mid officers, then the oommaud shall bo a*. surned by auob officer aa the Board of Fire Commie- fliouers may hereafter determine. . And it is further enacted by the authority aforeaaid, That the separate corporate existence of tbe corporation heretofore knowu as the “Savannah Fire Company" ie hereby recognized, but that ao much and such parts of any act or acta heretofore paused by the General Assembly aa give to the said S ivannah, Fire Company, whether under that oameor under the name of the Engine Company of the city of Savannah or under any other name, exclusive charge or control or management of the engines in ihe city of Savauiiali in cases of fire, or that make it the duty of th-s said the Savannah Fire Company under that or any othur name, in caaes of fire, or otherwise, to take charge of and manage such engines in the city of Sa vannah, be and the same are hereby repealed from and immediately after tbe organization and confirma tion os aforesaid, of the said Board of Fire Oommia- siouers provided for by this act; provided,always, that the said the Savannah File Company, aa an organised, incorporated white firo company in said city, ahali be entitl. d to t tand, in reference to the Fire Department enacted by this act, on an equal footing with and no better than any other organized, incorporated white fire company now existing or hereafter to exist in said city as aforeaaid; and ail the rights and proparty of the Maid Savannah Fire Company, lor the purpose or purpose* ot its original incorporation, are hereby re served to said Savannah Fire Company. Section 6. Section 7. And it is further enacted by the au- liority aforesaid. That the said Board of Fire Com missioners shall have fall power to do all and every act and acts, thing and thiugs other than herein ex pressed, which eball or miy be necesaary for the wel- rare and efficient action and working of the said Fire Department ot Savannah, It being always expressly understood and hereby provided tha| nothing in thia act contained sha l be .so construed as to make said Fire Department, or said Board of Fire Commie- sioner* a corporation or independent of the City Councilor Sa\auudh; but the said Fire Department and Board of Fire Commissioner* ahali be subject to tbe same control o« the said City Council aa that body exercised over the Savannah Fire Company.
