Boston, Nov. 17.—A brutal mud outrageous assault was committed last Friday forenoon on the person of the who of Kev. David A. Wasson, residing on Spring Hill, Somerville, by a coloredmau, who is supposed So be one James Robertson, who has been hanging around the vicinity of Cambridge for the past lew days. The black villain entered the house about 10 o’clock, and flndiug the lady alone, made a foul pro posal to her, accompanying it with threats of personal violence, and even dead:, if she did not submit. In addition to her entreaties to be spared from his brutish passion, she held out a sum of money, which ho flnal'y took, and also a pistol wrdch struck his fency; but after re ceiving those, in spite of her struggles and entreaties, ho accomplished his foul purpose and has tily left, and up to this time has not been arrested. A complete description of the rascal identifies him as a I’Cfeto who was arrested as a vagrant and suspicious t haracter, and lodged in th-j fifth police station in Oxbridge on Thursday night. The friends of the lady are highly exasperated at the affair, and it is hf*;md that his arrest will speedily be made and sum rnarv justice dealt out to him. Tho officers are ou bis track. (The Rev. D. A. Wasson mentioned in the foregoing di-patch is a pronouncedtnd prominent abolitionist of Massachusetts. He is one of the constant contribu tors to the Atlantic Monthly and a poet of some merit. With all these crops 1 found It acted aa finely aa the mauuraeturei.’ clahn fur 1L With all tha serious disasters that I oleli us this year In a protracted drouth and rust in cuttou, my crops were largely augmented tiy its use. My core crop, I am aatiafled, waa doubled by ibe applica tion, and had the rains continued have Ke^t i lie manure diluted, 1 think it would have trebled tile crop of corn on old exhausted land. With it tills ye . have made enough com for the use of my plantati. whereas I should hare had to buy largely to hat e kept up the same worklrgforce next yea-. Its stimulating qualities were very perceptible in the rapid gi owtn aud eany development oi all plants upon which it was used; and if luis the permanent Fertilizer that is claimed for it, and doubtless it Is, I would prefer it to Peruvian Guano or other fertilizers inoro volatile and costly. Comparing iis effect* upon my crop with what I witnessed of those manured with Peruvian Guano, I certainly am satisfied with its results—al though it needed the rains to have kept ll diiuled, and all the crops did not receive the full uencflt oi ilie application. SIMS A CO : Gents: As to the action of the Fertilizer, I have been highly gratified, lu effects have b-en very dis tinct at every stage of the crop, and its proprietors nave been peculiarly fortunate iu the production ■it a Fertilizer that if equally beneficial on corn md cotton. It le quite stimulating aud yet mild, possessing the advantage of gaano (Peruvian) in the first, and superior to it in being free fro u the heating, burning effect, so disastrous iu a drouth. My experience is that this American cumo Is too slow in Its actl ne for com, bnt It is excellent for cot ton. This arises from the Bet that the American va rieties, as they are known, possets more of ibe phos phates and lees or ammonia then the Peruvian. This acoouct- for tne quicker action of the Peruvian up„u the crop, but tho leas permanent- effect on the soil. Wbat will be the influence of the Emeka remains to be seen, as tnis is my first year’s trial; bnt my obser vation so far is, that no manure esn be happier lu its ‘ fleets ou the crop at every stags of its progress Such. I think, Is the Impression of others who have tried it tn this section, with whom I have couvers d. I have only used It thisyear m corn and cotton, the yield of which, I think, would have been doubled and even trebled If the seasons had been favorable. [ applied about three thousand pouuds o. it on ten acres or very poor land. I am satisfied that t he laud would not nave made more then four thousand pounds of seed cotton, and perhaps (this year) not more than three thotuand. I have already gaihred about six thousand poands, and may get five hnn dred more. The clay on these tea acres was very far from the surface, about two feet. Had the clay been within six Inches of the surf.ee, I behave that 1 should have made near nine huuured pounds to the acre. The “ Eureka Phosphate of Lime’’ is (according to my observation! much more stimulating than Peru vian Guano, especially when applied on corn, i ap plied one barrel (940 pounds! on one acre ami a bail of com. The production dlu not half equal tbe pro mise which the core mads daring the first six weeks. Bad the same quantity been applied to the com in broken doses, I believe the product would have been double what it waa. The corn was planted in Hie same kind of land that the cotton was, and at tbe end of aix weeks was three times as high as corn adjuiuing, four feet and a ha'f. Had I then applied more of the same manure it would have made an nverwli. lining crop. Bnt I had none or it lep. I believe mat my land, which would make Mix hun dred inlands of seed cotton, with the clay not ex ceeding six inches lrom the surface, could tie made to produce twelve hundred hundred would be two huudred pounds per acre in the farrow, and cover it up immediately with a small Scotch or auovel plow. This should be dons lmmediaieiy before put ting in the seed. When the e..tton is ready for me second or third working, about, the first or middle of Jane, ran x email plow near the cotton and sprinkle in that furrow about o*s hundred pouuus mure to six menus irnui tne snnace, could be made to twelve hundred poands by applying brec pounds of this Fertiliser.
